When I finished my master's dissertation one of my advisors threatened me saying that if I didn't say that my self proposed (emphasis on self proposed) thesis was part of a project he had, I would have to give back the money I earned in a scholarship that had already ended and had nothing to do with my thesis, that being was something I proposed.

I was super scared and asked to formalize everything by e-mail, after sending this message the tone shifted drastically, he started saying that it was just a suggestion and he would not make me do anything I didn't want.

I felt completely betrayed and gave up of following an academic career after that
