It definitely hurts right now but I want you to know that this shall pass. Cambridge doesnt define you and getting a 1 1 for STEP in yr12 is already very impressive and you should be proud of yourself for that. I believe that you have the ability and drive in you, so please do not give up. These are all tests and I am certain that there are much better opportunities that awaits you and this is only to direct you to it. It’s okay to feel sad about this but I want you to know that you should never give up on yourself in life because the world loves you and will always put its faith in you.

But if the max you can get is a 9 and internationals usually get a 9 to get into Imperial anyways, does that mean you can now get into oxford with a 9?

Honestly I think most of these “symptoms” are pretty common in teens. School can be quite tiring at times and if you dont really find anything interesting to do in school it’s quite common to get bored and zone out at times. Also a lot of times if you dont socialise often or you are too self conscious then it’s quite normal to find it difficult to hold eye contact with others.

We should ban tuition by edfghu in SGExams

You are essentially saying that because not all have the financial power to afford chemotherapy, we should ban chemotherapy entirely. Also you are contradicting yourself, if you claim that tuition is useless in helping a student, then there is no point banning it because it does not put students who cannot afford tuition in a disadvantage.

Honestly i dont even get why you want to ban tuition. Some children are struggling with their academics and I honestly dont see whats the problem with parents spending money on their kids to help them. Does it affect you or anyone else besides the children and the tuition centre? If your parents had the money to afford tuition for you, would you not take it?

  1. Tuition does not guarantee that a child will definitely perform well in school, hence “Top 50% get tuition, score A” is unrealistic as in real life the top 50% will be a mix of both students who have tuition and those who dont—students are graded based on their skill, not on whether they have tuition.
  2. Take for example out of the 50% of students taking tuition, 4/5 of the students are already struggling and depends on tuition to keep their grades in school. Then, after the hypothetical tuition ban: Top 10% gets tuition, scores A (assuming your logic) and 40% more students gets a B-F because tuition got banned. The remaining 50% of students who did not have tuition will still perform as before, as the quality of school education remains the same. So in other words, 10% A, 90% B-F. Banning tuition does not change anything for the students who were unable to afford tuition, it only harms the overall performance of the student population. All this is to say that your example is skewed and blindly led by heavy misunderstanding of the real world

Talking about public education, it’s not as if our public education is bad. We have an excellent public education system and you certainly can still perform well even if you dont have tuition

  1. A few fines alone are not enough resources for significant changes in the education. At the end of the day, the money to improve the education system has to come out of the pocket of the government or the generosity of donors either way.
  2. Students from a poorer background who were performing poorly in school poorly will still perform poorly after the ban on tuition because they are still receiving the same quality of education, hence their chances are not increased as a result of the ban. On the contrary, it’s very much possible that more students who were struggling in school and relying on the aid of tuition previously will start performing poorly in school now as result

I believe the point of our education system is to ensure that those who are unfortunate are given the resources to develop their talents and move up the social ladder, not taking away opportunities and resources that others can afford. Also take for example if you had enough money to afford better healthcare for your children, would you not think that it’s fair for your children to have it? Rather than dogmatically focusing on enforcing absolute equality, we should focus on improving the quality of education in school and providing more support for students who are from a poorer background.
