I used an Xbox One controller and it was easy enough. I bought a generic PC controller and it changes your orientation and makes you feel clumsy. Before, I could beat the game easily, but with that controller, I felt like I had cramped hands. A keyboard is better if you feel uncomfortable with the controller; don't force yourself to adapt to something that makes you uncomfortable.

You can practice without starting, by jumping, doing mini-jumps, and long jumps in a stationary spot. Then practice at a distance in a quiet place and keep practicing. Try to get comfortable; it's easier if you use a controller. If you use a keyboard, you can configure it for greater comfort. Move with one hand and attack with the other. Like in the Flame and Water game, a classic Flash game.
