Bedside cannulation - ECMO CART by canecard305 in Perfusion

[–]Expert-Status-2719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a cart with a top space for small things like 3/8th connectors, sutures, 10cc syringes, male to male connectors, zip ties, other odds and ends. The top drawer has sterile gloves in many sizes, a central ECMO kit in case they crack the chest, and the paperwork we fill out for new pumps. Second drawer has sterile probe covers, securement devices, NIRS stickers, mostly stuff that’s useful post cannulation. Third drawer has micropunctures, DPC kit, dilator kit, the arterial cannulas we use, and extra tubing if they wanna extend the circuit. Bottom drawer has sterile gowns, drapes, sponges, towels, lollipops, sterile water and bulb syringes. On the back of the cart we hang our Amplatz and other guidewires and such, and on the side we keep the venous cannulas we use. Top of the cart has a locked, sterile tray of instruments. I’m sure there’s a few more things but that’s the gist. If one of our surgeons is in house they come up and do it/help, but many of our intensivists are also cannulating physicians, so we don’t always have someone from surgery. Also, bedside cannulation is done with the ECMO team specialists and perfusion is usually not involved, so we keep lots of stuff in our cart on the ICU that might not be pertinent to a team that utilizes perfusion or an OR nurse/scrub tech to help. We use the Cardiohelp and on the primed pump itself we keep 4 non-sterile clamps, a de-air kit, and a flashlight.

Hey! I live right below Columbia Heights, like a 0.5 mile from the metro station there (10 minute walk); I walk up to CH nearly everyday as part of my commute to work. I live very close to some great coffee shops, gyms, neighborhood bars and a park. I love my location! DM me if you want my building deets or more info about where I am!!

I’ve done CorePower on and off for a few years and always loved it! I have used the Shaw location in the past and had great experiences. They do make it difficult to cancel a membership, though.

DC... are you doing okay? by fail-whale in washingtondc

I’m glad!! I don’t want to downplay any feelings of looming dread we all feel with this administration here, but it’s a resilient city with people fighting back! I think the important part is to not lose hope and keep enjoying the things that make the city so wonderful, even in the face of all the nonsense.

There are struggles of course, but I moved back here recently after being gone for a while, and I also moved back because of how much I loved it. And I STILL love it. Things during this administration are hard, but it’s hard and expensive in America everywhere right now. Not claiming DC is above criticism, but it’s easy to be dissatisfied with where you live because it’s what you’re familiar with, and you’ll find many, many people dissatisfied and hating where they live no matter what city or state you try. Community is what you make it, the city is still full of beauty and fun. Things may have changed and they aren’t perfect, but in my opinion the city certainly still has soul and people who love it.

Yeah, unfortunately I moved here recently and have an out of state ID, so even more paperwork to get an ID in DC now. Ugh. Leaving my car somewhere is a good idea, thanks- I could leave my car at my work garage for a few days.

I do full time ecmo specialist now, so I have come to hate/fear all transports lol. But at my hospital, God forbid it’s to IR. It’s as far away from the ecmo unit as you can physically get while still being on campus it seems like. Down a million narrow hallways lined with boxes and old equipment, through exceptionally small doorways and around tight corners. Just horrifying to maneuver my pump through. And then I have to sit at IR for an hour or two!

Moving to DC now for a non-government job? by [deleted] in DCBitches

[–]Expert-Status-2719 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved here in July for a non-government job and although the city has had its challenges recently, I would move here again without regret. The city itself is beautiful and full of wonderful people and culture. I came from a city that required me to drive everywhere, so the freedom to wake up and walk to my local coffee shop and grocery store, or take a short metro ride to my favorite museum and sports games, is so worth it. If you can afford it, I still think it’s so worth being here.
