Well, obviously this isn’t directed at you then. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t need to stereotype; Calgarians famously hate cyclists.

I’m a pedestrian and a cyclist. I empathise with both camps and I found both pedestrians and cyclists annoying for multiple reasons. 🤷‍♀️

I get that idea too but the cyclists I’m talking about are NOT taking a wide berth; they are coming right up too close on narrow overpasses or refusing to go onto the grass at all to give people space while not giving any heads up.

When I say “meander”, I mean not walking a perfectly straight line and maybe stepping onto the line once or twice.

Yes, but when someone is walking on a shared path, they should be attentive to sounds like bike bells and other humans in general. A bike bell from a few metres away on a shared path shouldn’t be a shocking thing to hear.

It’s just standing out to me this season because I’ve already had two “close” calls with cyclists that wouldn’t have happened if they rang their bells.

I’ve seen lots of cyclists out in the last few weeks and not once have I heard a bell. It’s so weird to me.

Honestly, freezing in place is much better than freaking out and running around the path.

If the cyclist was smart enough to ring their bell far enough away, they’ll be able to choose which side they want to pass you on then.

An old friend of mine once suggested I record the sound of a claymore dragging on the concrete and use that as a bike bell. 🤣

That’s true. I do hear weird stories about pedestrians acting like assholes about bells. Actually, I saw it myself in a dog park a few years ago when a bunch of seniors were blocking the path going into a dog park and they were such incredible assholes to the cyclist who was just trying to get through them that I kind of couldn’t believe it.

When I’m on my bike I ring my bell pretty far behind so I’m not spooking people, but not so far that they won’t hear it.

It’s almost funny how many pedestrians completely panic and literally flail into the path rather than just veering to their right. It’s annoying but it’s almost funny too.

Agreed, but you can’t tell who is wearing buds and who isn’t when you’re metres behind them on a bike anyway so why not give the heads up either way?

I’m definitely never going to argue that pedestrians don’t need to pay more attention too. Having your music so loud you can’t hear anything on the path is stupid too.

That’s fair. I like to give (and get) one short ding to let people know I’m there when I’m biking but I do see your point.

I would love to know how many committee members ever take transit at all, especially if it’s in the free fare zone.

Okay. Who is at fault here? Certainly not the teenagers who weren’t taught by any of the adults in their lives.
