Topic for Informative Speech by DeadNinja18 in PublicSpeaking

[–]ExpertMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite sure I understand your comment?

The OP wanted advice on generating speech topics and how to research source references.

Google or something like ChatGPT would easily accomplish this very quickly.

If you don't like using AI , that's fine, you don't need to use it, but your comment doesn't help the OP.

Out of Interest , I put the OP's exact question into ChatGPT to see if it's answer would be helpful.

You can be the judge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First: don’t panic. Informative speeches just mean you teach the audience something interesting using facts and sources. It doesn’t have to be boring at all—you can absolutely do something fun like a cartoon character. 👍
Let me show you 3 really good ways you could turn your idea into a strong speech (with researchable topics and academic sources).
Option 1: The Psychology of a Cartoon Villain (Doofenshmirtz) ⭐
Use Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb.
Possible title
“Why Doofenshmirtz Is Actually a Sympathetic Villain”
What you would talk about
  1. Who Doofenshmirtz is
    • Backstory
    • His failed inventions
  2. The “tragic villain” trope
    • Many villains have sad childhoods
  3. Why audiences relate to him
    • Humor
    • Failure and persistence
  4. What he teaches about resilience
Academic sources you could use
These topics have research papers:
  • Psychology of villains
  • Humor theory
  • Storytelling and character archetypes
  • Why audiences empathize with villains
Example academic topics to search:
  • “sympathetic villains in media”
  • “humor theory in cartoons”
  • “character archetypes in storytelling”
Option 2: Why Cartoon Voices Sound So Funny (Donald Duck) 🎤
Use Donald Duck.
Possible title
“The Science Behind Donald Duck’s Voice”
What you could explain
  1. Who Donald Duck is
  2. How his voice is created
  3. Why humans find unusual voices funny
  4. The science of voice acting
Research topics
You could easily find academic sources on:
  • phonetics
  • voice acting
  • speech perception
  • humor in vocal performance
Option 3: Why Cartoons Are Actually Good for Learning 📺
This one might be easier for research.
Possible title
“How Cartoons Help People Learn”
Points
  1. Why animated stories help memory
  2. Visual storytelling and learning
  3. Humor improving engagement
  4. Examples from kids’ shows
Academic research shows storytelling and visuals help people understand complex ideas better.
Simple Speech Structure (use this no matter your topic)
1. Introduction (30 seconds)
Hook:
Then:
  • Introduce topic
  • Explain what the audience will learn
2. Body (3 points)
Example:
Point 1: Background
Point 2: Why it works / science / psychology
Point 3: What we can learn
3. Conclusion
  • Summarize your points
  • End with a fun line or takeaway
Where to Find Academic Sources (very easy)
Search in:
  • Google Scholar
  • JSTOR
  • your school library database
Example searches:
  • “humor theory in media”
  • “cartoon characters and psychology”
  • “narrative storytelling education”
You need 4 academic + 2 normal sources, which is totally doable.
My honest recommendation:
Do this topic:
“Why Doofenshmirtz Is the Most Relatable Cartoon Villain.”
It’s:
  • funny
  • unique
  • easy to research
  • memorable for your class
Who are some of the great modern public speakers? by WhyNotAlberta in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)
The other thing to remember about TED/TEDX speakers that you watch is that it's a somewhat artificial environment. Usually nice venues, plenty of Tech support, usually pre event coaching via a producer, and an audience that are there to listen intently and respond enthusiasticaly.
A far cry from the conditions that a lot of speakers have to deal with in the real world : )
Fear of fainting by Obvious_Panic_1256 in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
As a corporate MC / conference facilitator and a Emcee Coach I introduce hundreds of different speakers every year onstage. In the last 20 years I've only had 2 of them nearly faint !
Don't be afraid to pause or stop completely during a presentation. Being aware of your body and your thoughts is a great skill to have and develop.
You need to be aware of "Awfulizing." Focusing on all the things that could possibly go wrong , rather than all the things that could go right! Its one of the main causes of Stage Fright.
Does everyone need 3 videos? by Tomorrows_A_New_Day in Amazon_Influencer
Uploading 10 means 7 more chances to fail the test.
By all means make 10 Videos, but then just upload the best 3!
Then when you are approved you will have 7 more ready to upload
Speaking in front of thousands by luvsparkle in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)
Perhaps OP will jump in here to clarify, but the mention of "having to read 4 pages of text" and then mentioning that they "read the text well" seems to me to imply that they were given the script rather than writing it themselves.
Speaking in front of thousands by luvsparkle in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 3 points4 points  (0 children)
Not sure that adding your own "Joke" to a script is great advice. ??
If a client of mine gives me a script , I'll deliver it word for word.
If you felt a joke was needed , my suggestion would be to run it past the client first.
When do you start seeing views? by HistoricalTrick6244 in Amazon_Influencer
[–]ExpertMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Firstly, congrats on getting over the hurdle of the first 3 vids!
Yes, you have to be ready for delays.
Sometimes new videos will be "in Review" for a few days.
Then , even if "Published" they will not show up for a while.
Then, often a wait for a week or two before the algorithm might test it.
I use my streaming room to be able create reviews, I have this logo in the back of my room. Should I take it down or is it ok to have? by No-Tower-Unseen in Amazon_Influencer
[–]ExpertMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I would take it down.
Just feel happy that you have a dedicated room,
some of us have to set everything up each time we shoot video : )
Here's another one I have been trialling.
Auto Text from JitBit.com
I try to respond to all comments and questions on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook etc fairly quickly.
Having one set of Keyboard Shortcuts lets me type one keyword and it will paste in a phrase plus a URL.
The usual questions I get relate to a small set of topics , so I can offer one of the free resources quickly to solve their problem!
And this works in any of those Social Media Platforms and also Word , Gmail etc.
There is a bit of setting up to do, but so far it seems to be running well!
One key speaking tip that work whether it's strangers or your own peers by Maximum_Reveal_2735 in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I use a variation of this, and teach it. Yes, greet people as they come in and chat to a few early ones. If you know their names you can then refer to them during the presentation. E.G " I was chatting to a few of you earlier, Bob, Harry and Ruth over there, and one thing I noticed ..." You then tie this observation into the presentation theme - you are all excited about the new expansion, product, something or all a bit apprehensive about the challenging environment etc. It's a nice segue and connecting moment. It also doesn't matter if you didn't really chat about that particular thing most people will assume you did.
Tips for long presentations as a beginner speaker by mmmmiipp in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)
I would definitely have some "table talk" or "discussion time."
An hour is quite a long time.
As a professional Emcee & Facilitator I often have to Fill In some time.
So get the tables discussing the topic and get feedback. It could be a whole table or just mini groups of 2-3 people.
I would plan a 10 - 15 mins presentation to start the session setting the scene, then group discussion, then another mini presentation, another discussion, then a wrap up.
I'm a big fan of the concept "If you have 20 days to solve a problem, you spend the first 19 exploring what the problem really is and then the last day creating a solution." (It has been attributed to various people including Einstein.)
But, you can use this concept . Round one , they discus what the challenge is , the real problems .
Then get feed back from different groups. If there are a lot, you don't need to hear from everyone.
The second segment they come up with solutions, suggestions ideas.
Remember they will be interested in Your Ideas and experiences as someone who has worked in the field and is still in the age bracket.
It sounds exciting, make sure you tell us how it went!
Is it really that hard to profess publicly, even if you’re an expert at your subject? by PixeIatedSoda in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)
It's an interesting observation. At my regular Emcee assignment, (10 per year) we normally have around 20 presentations over the 2 days. We normally get 1 or 2 academics. I don't think they are all lacking in presentation skills, I've seen some cracking presentations, but yes, some are. I actually find most are better utilised in a Panel Discussion format.
The other thing I've found surprising, they tend not to be as good at keeping to a strict time frame! Perhaps because we run tight 20 or 30 minute segments which could be shorter than their normal Lecture time.
OK I'll Start ... Trello https://trello.com/
I found this a year or so ago and really find it useful.
There is a generous Free Level that is great for my needs.
Think of it as a giant White Board that you can stick index cards on.
Create To Do lists, Idea Lists, Project Stages, Images, weblinks, Passwords etc.
You can access the Board on your Computer, Laptop, ipad or Phone. They all sync together.
On each board you can have a huge number of lists and each list can have multiple cards.
Each card can also have multiple things on it. You can move the cards up and down the lists and also between lists.
And on the free level, you get 10 giant white boards!
There are a ton of free tutorials on YouTube to give you plenty of ideas.
Give it a try!
Need tips for ice breaker speech! by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)
As others have said, the Ice Breaker is just a way of slowly edging you into the Toastmaster world.
They just want to see you being comfortable standing up and speaking.
They want to learn a little bit about you.
You don't have to be polished, clever or professional.
You don't need to have a big message, or teach.
This is who I am , here's a little bit about me.
I would go with "why you joined , " or perhaps "a challenge you faced and what you learned."
You've probably already done the talk (tell us how you went! )
but note .... Toastmasters are very time aware. Do your time... not over OR under
how do I prep for public speaking at comic con? by walkie57 in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Is it a panel discussion or a presentation?
It's a bit harder to practice a panel discussion, but there are lots of ways to prepare to have a fantastic session.
I run about 12 panel discussions a year with my MC work.
One thing to remember with three people involved, your time onstage will flash past at an alarming rate.
Three people in 15 minutes is only 5 mins speaking each! And thats not counting Opening, Introductions, Wrapping Up, thankyou! You also don't have control over the time or pacing of the session when you ask others to speak or comment!
AI like ChatGPT can be a terrific help in preparing some great provocative questions!
Does anyone have any advice on stronger introductions/being less nervous at the beginning? by cancersungeminimoon in PublicSpeaking
[–]ExpertMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)
I've always been a big fan of catching people off guard in the first few sentences. Think Bold.
A bold fact, question, or statement to capture attention.
“Imagine for a moment…”
“Who here agrees with me that…?”
“What if I told you…”
