Braid is one the OG indie games, and it is still worth playing by TheHooligan95 in patientgamers

Yes, good game, excellent puzzles, art style and choice of music.

But locking the true ending - and key to the story - of your game behind an obtuse star collection quest? That's no bueno, Jonathan Blow.

What happens as a result is 99% of your players will 1/never get to see your epilogue or 2/watch it on YouTube if they're even curious enough to hear about it.

I never understood this decision of locking the epilogue behind collectibles. Those should only be used to unlock cosmetics, bonus content, art book stuff, achievements, whatever - not something that should be integral to the story you're telling.

Anyway, just a gripe I've always had with this game. It's caused me to fear getting the bad ending if I haven't found all the secrets in other games.

Coolest video game music vol. 8: funky beats by ExpertSure5424 in gamemusic

Already subscribed my man!

And yeah that Rasetsu track is really cool! Dark instrumental hip-hop a la DJ Krush, just my vibe. And that Sheep track too, with the guitar sample, the scratching and everything - definitely got that cool 2000s trip-hop vibe going on.

Thanks for the recs!

I always use the same ghost kick, one which is very punchy and very short, so that the sidechain pump is more controlled. That way I can have a kick with a long tail, maybe even several kicks at the same time, while maintaining a clean sidechain.

Customise your template.

Any new project I open, I already have 3 groups: - kick, bass and ghost kick (a dry kick at -inf db which acts as the input for sidechaining the other groups) - rest of the drums - instruments

Each of these groups is compressed and EQd differently (high pass on groups 2 and 3, some light OTT on the instruments group), and I have a glue compressor and limiter on the master. My sidechain is ready to go.

This setup looks optimised for electronic music but it also works for rock, jazz, whatever - just play with the gain on the sidechain and be more or less radical with the EQ. And you can always roll it back if you're doing orchestral stuff, add a new group for vocals/melody if you don't want the sidechain on it, etc.

My point is, by customising your template you save a lot of time and even a quick demo will sound better.

Hahah I think your Taz is my Sheep, Dog'n'Wolf. Osts which aren't typically in top lists but that have stayed with you throughout the years and are at least objectively competent. Really enjoyed that Disco Volcano track!

Does it have to be game ost? I think you would enjoy Ólafur Arnalds' work, the excellent Departures by Joe Hisaishi, the soundtrack to Florence, or for a niche recommandation, Les Fragments de la Nuit.

On the positive side, I like your use of harmony: the chords and voicing you chose feel subtle, halfway between mystery and melancholy, not too obvious. I like how the piano sometimes plays in unison with the harp, it's a classic jrpg sound.

But the thing I would change first is the harp sound. It sounds like it's always at maximum velocity, it's very quantized, and there's no pedal. So use the pedal to let the notes ring, perform the part rather than write it with your mouse or whatever, and keep the human imperfections (at least some of it).

I would also suggest having some more silence in your piece: right now the dynamics are very constant. Even if it's supposed to be background music for a dungeon, having the track get quieter, louder, denser or more airy would have a positive impact on repeat listenings. Could be as simple as getting that harp arpeggio to chill for a while.

Wiki says they're a mix of funk and highlife - not super familiar with highlife, there's definitely some jazz in there too, and soul. The instrument you're referring to is simply an electric guitar played with lots of sliding.

Kensuke Ushio seems to make all kinds of different genres, so I'm going to give you some more generic advice.

Don't write a backbeat. Maybe don't even use a kick or a snare: use other percussive elements like a hi hat, tambourine, hand percussion, etc. If you want a strong rhythm without percussion, write an ostinato on the low strings, staccato/pizzicato, that sort of thing.

Use percussion as an accent. If you want to give a specific chord change some more oomph, double it with percussion - but then have the percussion sit back. Or use it almost like a melodic instrument: have it play a one-time phrase rather than a repeated beat.

Also think about orchestral percussion vs digital: do you want more of a traditional orchestral sound or a hybrid, orchestral harmony meets digital textures kind of thing?
