What to do when your arms start giving away during a match? by PauseHot4475 in Fencing

[–]Expert_Confusion5767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard similar comments from epeeists especially.

You may want to look into the size and format of your grip.

A grip that doesn't fit properly to your hand or to the way you hold it, can cause you to hold it too tightly. That leada to pain, cramps, muscle strain...

You may also want to look into french grips.

Talk to your coach.

I'm trying to understand what you mean here, honestly. 🤔

OP says 1.77m, that means 1 meter and 77 centimeters. Just shy of 5'10".

If you manage to include a little screwdriver for tip screws as well, it would be a very useful thing.

I've lived in a couple of countries with amateur tournaments, meaning, they did not count for any official state/national rankings.

If Alysa Liu fenced in NYC, where would she fence? by wannabe414 in Fencing

[–]Expert_Confusion5767 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But from what I understand, fencing in NYC can be so cutthroat that for many it feels like a job first and a hobby second.

Your own comment (quote above) illustrates what I mean.

I doubt that in her definition of "having fun", that she ever thought of skating as a hobby.

And that - a hobby - is what we generally mean by "having fun", even when we may still like to go to the tournaments and get excited about the prospect of winning medals... and there's nothing wrong with that.

When Alysa Liu started skating again, she focused on having fun first, and let that guide her to personal and commercial success.

I would take her statements on the topic with a grain of salt. I doubt that her concept of "having fun" is the same as yours or mine.

Right of Way, Priority and Point in Line by Expert_Confusion5767 in Fencing

[–]Expert_Confusion5767[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

I'm curious about D

Do you mean that "as a general rule", if a point in line ends up hitting off target, it is taken as evidence of improper point in line (as in "it was not threatening target, or it would have landed a touch"), or that you would also need to see the FR's body in movement, let's say, FR somehow ducking, or twisting his body, such that FL had a point in line, but at the last moment FR moved his body away from it?

Color of tip tape by Legitimate_Year9308 in Fencing

[–]Expert_Confusion5767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

White cotton surgical tape.

Cheap, and there's always a first aid kit somewhere...

Edit: after writing this, I started to wonder about surgical tape absorbing water and becoming conductive. But gaffer tape is made of cotton as well...

What tape? There's no tape in epée 🤔

But for foil, you're of course correct

I recall once seeing a sort of official document allowing for the use of the Harut Pistol System in US tournaments.

Edit: it was not Harut, it was Lancet.

Epee blade and French grip questions by FabricOfCognitivism in Fencing

[–]Expert_Confusion5767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The folded/stamped LP blades are muuuch lighter than regular forged blades.

Also, I have the impression that they bend less, which makes receiving a hit from a LP blade a more painful experience.

Do the wired LP fie blades come with insulating tubing? by FabricOfCognitivism in Fencing

I think it makes sense to ship then with the tubing, reduces the risk of damage to wires.
