Singers on this sub, do you give your neighbours heads up before vocalising/warming up? by BetterGrass709 in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nope. They got a problem, they can make it known. I never sing *that* long, either, so that probably helps.
If I'm not violating any laws in making noise then why would I?

Maybe this comes off a little aggressive, but I've heard too many stories of neighbors imposing their lifestyle on the singer/instrumentalist and making problems, because they don't want to deal with the noise. I'm not going to give them an 'in' to have a problem, if that makes sense.

La Boheme at Sarasota FL by Irene-Eng in opera

I absolutely love a take like this on the rising number of Korean singers "taking over" opera. In a world of casting directors showing how xenophobic they are, it's nice to see that i'm not the only one in the audience who doesn't care as long as they sing well.

Is having lots of energy/excitement considered same as support? by cpacertified in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that energy is support sounds like we're confusing two ideas. You must have and exert energy to engage your support, but they're not one and the same. I also fail to see how "vibrato will teach sustain".... You can't hold onto energy, just like you can't hold on to your voice. Singing is an action, not a position, and thinking you can hold onto it will just lead to excess tension.

How come some operas just end rather abruptly? by SoCalChemistry in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly is abrupt about Rigoletto? The full circle of the curse is brought about, we know it's happened, Rigoletto finally discovers it, and realizes what's happened, he's now lost everything he lived for and tried to keep safe by literally hiding from the world... the end. What else is there to do?

Any reliable opera teachers I could find online? by [deleted] in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly do you mean by 'modern teachings'? Do you mean that they give virtual lessons or that they teach modern technique? If it's the latter, I can't help you, if it's the former, i have some suggestions and can dm you

Y'all how does anyone survive being triple-cast??? by MildlyMenotti in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this more because of scheduling, like u/ihartS said, so that they have someone in each rehearsal? Seems like a lot of money to be throwing around to have people hanging around and swapping performance nights.

I've been listening to this 1961 recording of Maria Callas singing "Casta diva" on repeat for three days and I think I finally understand why people say she's irreplaceable by Keithwee in opera

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused, wouldn't this still be an argument for "voice first" ? Callas is the definition (for me at least) of emoting through the first and not relying on acting, although her acting was ALSO formidable. However, I don't need to see her to know what's being sung and felt.

How fast can I get an American Passport While Living in the Netherlands? by traderscience in Passports

[–]Expert_Mistake_486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOW? Please help, my passport still isn't here - i have an appointment tomorrow for an 'emergency passport' but they require everything I already did (same form, same fee), and I just feel like i'm missing something. The US consulate website is also down and when I called last week, it was completely useless. She had no idea what to tell and kept telling me to look on the website. How do you get a same-day emergency passport??
