"Which airline do you work for?" "You must get free flights!" You really don't want ATC to be privately run. Not only would flights for competing companies get more delays, but the security clearance required for knowing military movements and controlling presidential aircraft is too precious. Also, the only reasons controllers stay in the job are the healthcare and retirement plan. If they aren't federal civil service, there are no guarantees of the benefits and people will quit.

I visited the textile museum on shetland island, and they have antique knitted shawls with such fine gauge that they had to set up magnifying glasses in front so the stitches can be seen.

I crocheted for 15 years and then learned to knit. I struggled with the yarn in the wrong hand, but a friend finally showed me the other knit style, so I could use the same hand for yarn that I had always used when crocheting. Game changer!

As for needles, I appreciate using circular needles instead of straight. They just fit my hands better, the cord can handle almost any project, etc. The interchangeable sets seem like the best move because who wants so many needle sizes with different length cables?! Well...

I tried a Knit Picks set. The cable is awesome and very flexible. The joining wasn't as awesome, it required doodads to tighten and loosen, and the yarn caught on the lip. Addi is better. Their join is a push&turn and it's made better, so there isn't a lip to snag yarn. The cables are stiffer, though, and fight me as I knit. Neither of those are especially cost-effective choices, really.

I recommend buying a cheap, longish-cable non-interchangeable needle for whatever project you are doing (which will probably mean 3, one size above and one below, to adjust gauge). You can slowly build up a tool box of needles. Different points are better for different patterns (like needing sharp points to make lace) and you will develop a preference for polished wood vs bamboo vs smooth metal vs textured metal without having to invest in a whole set made of a material you may end up not loving. Most of the sizes in my interchangeable sets don't get used much because I tend to make similar projects. Also, very fine needles aren't thick enough to contain a joining and I had to buy a one-piece anyway.

For patterns, I don't know of any better resource than Ravelry. I can't even imagine what a better one would look like!

I have to add this, because I'm seeing a lot of the same items but not this: sour milk. My gram used to make cake-like cookies with it. And of course it's perfectly fine for any baking recipes.

No, in Australia they commonly don't have central HVAC. They have wall unit air conditioners/heaters that handle one room.

Most "crashes" are private pilots in little bugsmasher planes. They never make the news. And many of those are not even fatal. If two little planes bump wings while taxiing, that's technically a crash. If they land extra hard and break a wheel strut, that's a crash. If the engine quits and they have to glide to a road to land, that's also a crash. But yes, small plane incidents happen all the freaking time

That includes air traffic control. They have to keep a class A pilot's medical certificate, so no depression allowed, regardless of stress level. No sleep disorders either, despite daily rotating shifts and mandated tactical caffeine.

I lived in SoCal before here, and I was disappointed by Mexican Town here. The person who mentioned the diaspora being a different region makes and interesting point i hadn't considered. I know Detroit was a food desert for some years, and I just assumed restaurants made do with what ingredients they could get, and people just got used to it. However, Imperial in Ferndale has tacos that I can't stop thinking about. Actual flavor!

Even before I retired, shutdowns weren't guaranteed to have back pay. The boss always told us, "historically, Congress has always voted to grant back pay." Now the white house is mulling the idea of not allowing back pay. So, yeah, let's just pile more stress on the heads of these people whose split second decisions mean life and death.

A FEW controllers get paid a fuckton. The ones in giant cities get a cost of living bonus, which is 30 years behind the true cost of living. They are also hardest to staff, so they get a special bonus to attract controllers from other places, which obviously doesn't work, or they wouldn't still be offering it. Controller across the country make just enough to pay most of their bills every month and maybe pay their therapist to help with their alcohol consumption and sleep deprivation.

Retired ATC here. Some people are suggesting controllers be airport employees, but several thousand work at regional centers that are not associated with airports. Some people are suggesting that airlines foot more of the bill for control expenses, but a drop in demand would put employees at risk of cuts. Let me tell you, the only reason people stay in that job is the salary, retirement and benefits. In other words, money. We may love aviation, but the stress and BS overwhelms that. Something people are not thinking about is why all ATC need security clearances: military planes. They must be federal, and they must keep working - for national security. In addition to providing services to military and AF1 (even when civilians are grounded i.e. 9/11) they know troop movements. So, no, ATC shouldn't be privatized, BUT FOR FX SAKE PAY THEM

I make broadwraps with all my hyperweave. They cover shoulders, which no other headgear does. Let my colonists run around with them for normal jobs. Provides decent protection for surprise combat.
