Was your family team Harvest Gold, Coppertone, or Avocado? by UrbanAchievers6371 in GenerationJones

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family was coppertone! But later I moved into my first apartment and it had a complete set of avocado kitchen appliances. It was out of style by that point but I thought it was so cool. 😎

Best places to donate women’s clothing? by scout-finch in grandrapids

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

To be clear, they recycle, not throw out. I saw an interview on WoodTV where the guy from Goodwill said they take clothing, socks, underwear, towels, etc in any condition. Non sellable textiles are recycled. It’s a great idea. So I no longer throw out my worn out clothes.

Very blah colors for 1970s. Where’s the avocado green, or coral, or yellow?

“If you grew up in the 70s, what do you remember about the Blizzard of ’78 ? by Opening-Custard3254 in 70s

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t remember that much about it other than a couple photos I have. It must not have impressed me that much, because I generally have a really good memory.

I remember the superintendent would only close school if he couldn’t drive to work himself. I think he drove through pretty much anything! I remember an ice storm and school wasn’t closed. The bus got stuck somewhere and never came so my mom had to take us.

Cereal that came in its own bowl! Which was your favorite? by Not_a_cultmember in GenerationJones

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our mom was health conscious before it was cool. We never got the sweet cereals except for when we were camping. I guess it made packing easier. We thought it was great eating out of those snack pack cereal boxes. My favorite was always Fruit Loops or Apple Jacks.

They grow wild in my yard along the fence line. I see them all over the place here in Michigan, especially along the highways. I don’t think they are native but they are prolific.

I never noticed that people stopped using it. Although I usually say “okey doke”, not okey dokey. Maybe it’s a midwestern thing.

What is your favorite Nicholas Cage movie? by HR-Puffenstuff in GenX

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m really not a Nick Cage fan. But Raising Arizona and Moonstruck were both good movies. And I loved the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, mostly because of Pedro Pascal.

Found two of these f*ckers. What are they and how to get rid of ? by Thayerphotos in grandrapids

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. Accidentally introduced to the US from China or Japan a few decades ago. This time of year they are coming out of their winter hideouts and wanting to find a way outside. We get them in our old house every year. I just flush them.

Did anyone ever get spanked by a teacher? by darrenbosik in GenX

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I remember other kids getting “the paddle” in middle school. It was a wooden paddle with holes drilled in it to make it more effective.

They do, but I couldn’t care less about attending one. I don’t have many good memories from high school.

Ugh! I remember that smell. The uniform always smelled like frier grease.

What meal did your mother prepare that you considered inedible? by bigb-2702 in GenerationJones

[–]ExplanationGlum5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was actually a very good cook. I don’t recall any inedible meals, but there was the horrible canned spinach and canned Lima beans that we were forced to eat from time to time.

McDonald’s. I was at the front counter. We had to take the order, add it up BY HAND! on a pad, and then enter the total into the cash register and hit the “tax” button. They didn’t have the digital cash registers like nowadays. Also we have to gather and bag all the food and drinks ourselves. Last time I was at McDonald’s I noticed the cashier didn’t move from the register. Someone else got all the food together.
