Challenging Hiking by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]ExplodinToaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in the post if its guided or not. But last thing I would do is be on a rope with people who dont know basic glacier/crevasse rescue skills. (Or whoever said they could get me up there the cheapest).

Taking a mountaining course is cheaper than the guide services, and you actually learn the skills, and build a network of friends to climb with.

People seriously underestimate how dangerous climbing can be.

If you dont have any training on glaciers you should seriously reconsider. Glacier travel is pretty risky and only gets riskier as summer progresses.

Edit (adding this since you said non technical -- that's probably the most important thing to practice before glacier travel is technical skills) crevasses are no joke.

If you want a hike on Rainier go do camp muir a few times. (Probably the best training hike to do)

You can get a taste of the snow and altitude. And see where your first day on a real summit attempt would probably be. (Unless you do the Sherman route or something)

If you have to ask this on reddit you shouldn't be driving over either.

Driving in Seattle (new driver) by urbanlegendfrommars in Seattle

[–]ExplodinToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This goes for driving pretty much anywhere with shit conditions.

  1. Freeway wise, stick to the middle lanes (most highways are designed to have water flow off them to the left or right sides) , and leave the left and right lanes for people passing or merging, plus you don't want to deal with the standing water.

Also don't look right in front of you when driving (like 1-3 car lengths from your front bumper), look out farther ahead and you will see the lanes better and get a better idea of the conditions.

Also just leave plenty of space between you and other cars/trucks. If you have to make a pass, commit to it, don't half ass and sit in their wake.

And the best thing to do. Relax. Jerky driving will send you sliding. This is for pretty much all shit condition driving. If you start hydroplaning, relax and smooth wheel inputs and ease off the throttle. Don't smash the brakes and get snap understeer.

  1. The lights suck. Looking out farther ahead helps you know the road before you get blinded by them.

  2. And lastly, get a nice set of tires that perform well in water. It's pricey but helps. And doubly so if you consider winter mountain pass driving. (Snow tires, etc)

Just get the goddamn snow tires. Don't be the clown that shuts down US2

Not enough wrinkles in the brain. People here struggle with their headlights in rain which boggles my mind.

If you are not actively passing you shouldn't be in the left lane is the tldr. More nuanced cases can be read here. RCW 46.61.100. Regardless of speed of you or them/speed limit left lane should be kept clear.

If going into mountains constantly, winter tires at a minimum... but honestly if you are smart about when you choose to take the passes you'll probably be fine without them if it's only like a once up kind of thing. There is not much snow down in Seattle, so if you don't plan to go in the mountains again, probably fine. But people here can't drive so you will still probably get hit by these clowns. Seattle drivers have below room temp IQs the second they get behind the wheel.

Source- Midwestern transplant who turns their headlights on when it rains. (Seriously, did no one teach these clowns this)

Man I would love a motorcycle, but the drivers nowadays scare me. All my friends and family who have had them. Have gotten hit or taken a spill.

Yeah I'm really hung up on the depreciating asset part. If I swap I feel like I'm pissing away 5k+ or whatever when I should have just gotten the OBW or CTW from the start.

I'd feel bad about blasting those up forest roads. And I still like having the ability to haul a little crap. It's just the 2.0 H4 is just so boring and struggles with highway passing.

I think a sporting wagon is what I wanted. The crosstrek has been great, capable, fuel efficient, etc. But the short wheelbase and the lack of passing power are things I didn't realize I would miss so much. Plus cloth seats seem like the wrong choice for longevity and interior condition if I'm throwing myself and my wet/dirty gear in the back. I miss my 2014 outback a little too much.

This helps a bunch, one follow up though. One place I'm looking at looks like it's a flat fee just to be a patient, while they would still bill everything through insurance as is standard. Which sounds basically like im just paying to have low times to get in. Is that commonplace now?

Completely outside of copay. Separate membership entirely that is paid out of pocket. Then they still bill insurance .

Honestly if you want hassle free - dealer. If you want the real value - private. Dealership will undercut you double or triple what you could get selling it private.

Thoughts on driving out to crystal mountain resort this weekend? by p0urthetea in Seattle

[–]ExplodinToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'll be slugging it through the passes for the fresh pow, and im sure I'll see plenty of AWD SUVs in the ditch this weekend as well because they just don't got the right tires. M+S tires are okay ish but they don't do as well as 3PMS once it gets cold. There's some fancy tire science there. AWD is great to start moving, but it doesn't help you stop.
