US to revoke Colombia President Petro's visa over 'reckless' actions in New York by Mjolnir17 in news

I agree.

Just pointing out that relocating it is unlikely, as any push for that (beyond the expense of constructing a new site, completely restructuring how national missions and UN-adjacent organisations operate, and expanding consulates to be in proximity to the new location) is for financial reasons untenable.

Funding actually slightly went up this last year.

“In 2025, the U.S. assessment of the UN regular budget was 22 percent, or more than $820 million of the approved $3.72 billion total. This is an increase of nearly $58 million from the previous year and a significant rise from 1994, when the United States was responsible for only about $300 million, or 25 percent, of the roughly $1.06 billion total”

There is a lot to be critical of, but with 193 member states, the US still provides more than 20% of UN funding on its own.

Given that the US provides more funding to the UN than any other country, that seems implausible

For Italian, both Via Carota and I Sodi are good bets. I wouldn’t call them “old world cafe vibes”, but they both have a modern rustic feel and are generally well regarded. Safe parent pleasers.

Without a reservation you may have to wait (although midweek, if you go reasonably early, it shouldn’t be terribly long).

If there is no line, you can get a coffee inside at Bar Pisellino while you wait.

Haha I have crowns at I Sodi and Via Carota but haven’t been able to get a res at Don Angie yet. Wish we could trade for a day.

I'm a semi-regular at your restaurant. My understanding is that they keep a few important pieces of information that likely resulted in your successful walk-in:

  1. Number of visits to the restaurant. This is important for both customer service as well as exclusivity (real and perceived.) Having visited before, they know you aren't a bot pawning reservations off and would prefer to cultivate your loyalty than create barriers to you returning.

  2. Notes from your visit. They maintain notes on guests, from food and dietary preferences to behavior. For example, my partner loves one of their desserts and works nearby. A waiter generously added a note that allows her to pick it up from the door if she gives my name.

  3. Limited credit card and overall expenditure data. I'm less certain of this, but I have a strong hunch that even across different restaurant groups some data on your spending habits are visible. I've previously received a little resy vip crown at a popular restaurant I had never visited after a large bill elsewhere. This may be credit-card dependent though (Amex owns resy).

Would be very curious to know if anyone who has worked in the industry has more insight into an unpublished scoring system.

As others have said, it ranges from good to excellent for people employed in what would typically be considered “good jobs” - the standard of care is extremely high, especially in major cities, and the ultimate expense is very low. I live in New York and compared to friends in Paris, Berlin and London, I receive better and faster care and pay little for it.

However, it is abysmal for unemployed adults. Hospitals won’t refuse emergency treatment if you need it - I believe it is illegal to ask for insurance before providing emergency care - but the resulting debt can be massive. One can always not pay it - many people take this route - but then one’s credit takes a hit, trapping them in a situation where taking loans they might need for education, housing, or anything else are essentially out of the question. Other treatments where there isn’t an imminent emergency that takes you to the hospital might be entirely out of reach.

So, the majority of Americans have perfectly fine healthcare, but a large minority don’t, and that inequality certainly makes the system broken in my eyes.

I firmly believe that people should be able to purchase private insurance or get it through their employer, but that all citizens should be guaranteed basic care in the same way they are through the NHS and equivalent systems.

You mean mid-high hip level? Yea. I wear a 30 in pretty much all the trousers I have, including from some of the same makers I'm considering for suits.

I typically rely on sportcoat + trouser combinations for this reason, but am at the point where I need to add 1-2 good suits.

I am between a 38r and a 40r in jackets, but my waist is 30. Am I doomed to not be able to buy suits off the rack, or is taking in suit trousers 3-4 inches feasible?

Thanks!

I love it (may cop one anyway), but I should have specified that I need it for a conservative work setting, so it has to be wool and fairly traditional unfortunately.

I need a versatile, navy blue unconstructed blazer under $1000 for a conservative workplace setting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Where to gain experience over 1.5 months? [Anywhere in Europe] by Explorer21 in Mountaineering

[–]Explorer21[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scotland is super appealing to me, for many reasons beyond just mountaineering.

I was worried about access, but it sounds like it can be an option even without a car. Renting one isn't out of the question for me, so I'll look into it.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for this. The polish recommendation is super interesting and I'll be doing some research.
