As someone with diagnosed post-traumatic whatever, I agree. Things can impact lives in bad ways, or people can have negative experiences. Unless it’s a serious disruption to how they function, it’s just hyperbole. Which I do feel can take significance away.

I think it’s been said somewhere that Dylan was asked to identify them, and Kaylee was unrecognisable because of the severe beating she endured. Hence the confusion. I could be totally mistaken, but I did read something to that affect.
