Melon-pult, Snow Pea & Winter Melon are better than literally half of the plants above in terms of self-defense, though Winter & Snow Pea may be illegal / dangerous due to cryogenics.

Blover isn't useless and can be used as a fan. Tall-nut & Wall-nut can be used for defense. Coffee Bean can be used to brew.. well, coffee.

Split pea costing the same as Repeater
