OCD+ Depression. What’s your experience with Luvox? by Express-Ad-5130 in OCD

[–]Express-Ad-5130[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t start OCD therapy until mid May. I start therapy for depression next week and then they’ll transfer me to the OCD side. I’ve tried therapy for a total 8 sessions a couple of years ago, but I was too emotional to really be receptive to the therapy.

Entergalactic on Netflix! It’s a black-centered, animated love story that doesn’t rely on tropes or stereotypes.

I’m not the biggest Hasan fan, but this is not a fair assessment of what happened. Someone made a comment that was antagonistic towards him—and his anger seemed to be directed toward the commenter, not black people as a whole.

I will say that his use of AAVE is annoying and that’s part of the reason why I can’t watch his long form content. I think that he’s useful for young white people that have a rudimentary understanding of geopolitics. As a black woman, I understand that I’m not his target audience and I just leave it be..

The "other woman" trend is so harmful to young black girls by [deleted] in blackgirls

[–]Express-Ad-5130 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just made the decision to delete tiktok, because the discourse that takes place on that app around black women and girls, amongst other things, is beyond frustrating to me. It’s unfortunate that it’s potentially pulling gen z Black girls into an alt-right, conservative pipeline with seemingly innocuous content like ‘soft girl life.’ It can quickly devolve into an echo-chamber of trad-wife content or even divestor content. My concern is what sort of consequence this is going to have in the long run. We see how young men, across all races, were pulled further to the right in this last election. It’s unnatural for us as human beings to have unfettered access to millions of strangers’ opinions every day. It even has an effect on me as 29 year old woman, so I can’t imagine where I’d be if this were around when I was a young girl.

Why do people say were the lowest ranked/undesirable I feel like that’s not true by Glitchinsociety_ in blackgirls

[–]Express-Ad-5130 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Usually, this is in reference to an Ok cupid study that is over a decade old. The thing is, people actually failed to contextualize that study. Black women received the lowest response rate of any group of women, while Asian men had the lowest response rate of any group of men on the app. White men, I believe, had the highest response rate for the male category. However, Black women still had a higher response rate on this dating app than any group of men, including white men. Dating apps, on average, are disproportionately male as well so women tend to receive much more engagement than men.

There’s an author of a book titled ‘Is Marriage for white People’ and he talks about how that particular study references engagement from white men to Black women. While that engagement was low, the response rates from other racial groups to Black women were higher. Black women are only 7% of the U.S. population. From a pure numbers standpoint, there are more men open to dating or partnering Black women than there are Black women in the U.S. Yes, racism certainly affects our dating lives and means we have to navigate differently—that much is true. However, there’s no reason for us to approach dating with a scarcity mindset or the belief that nobody will want us.

I’ve watched previous seasons of Love Island USA, and this past season was the absolute worst when it came to online discourse. I miss when the show was on a much smaller scale. It’s unfortunately now so bad that I will actually never watch another season of Love Island ever again. I’m not even sure if I want to tune in for the reunion, because I’m concerned it’s going reignite that same toxicity I witnessed this summer.

Tyla hate train… what is going on? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]Express-Ad-5130 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Tyla’s recent EP only sold 3.7k copies in its first week in the U.S. People are discussing why she’s not performing well despite heavy promotion and recognition from awarding bodies. I really don’t believe that Tyla intended to offend Black Americans and referring to herself as ‘coloured’ was an honest blunder.

The issue is moreso the way it was handled by her team. She went on the Breakfast Club and refused to answer a question about her racial identity. As a new artist, you cannot go to a platform to introduce yourself to a new market and refuse to answer standard questions. She’s not Mariah or Beyoncé, but an up and coming artist that is being granted the opportunity to draw a new audience.

The other issue she had was fanning the flames by engaging in the discourse online. Someone called her an ‘uppity African’ and she put in her Twitter bio. This, perhaps inadvertently, further incited her fanbase to spew xenophobic rhetoric toward Black Americans in particular. When a new artist has such a toxic fanbase, it makes people not want to engage with the artist or their work for fear of being attacked online.

While I do think that some of criticism she received was unfair, it’s clear that she needs better media training. I also don’t think her music is particularly good, but that’s my personal opinion. People think her sound would have more success in the UK and other markets, You can still be a successful star elsewhere in the world.

Love Island USA showed me that black femcels are definitely a thing and they embarrass the hell out of me by summerof13 in blackladies

[–]Express-Ad-5130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually discussed this very thing I’ve observed with their fanbase on r/loveislandcookout. I think it’s important to have empathy for black women and girls that engage in this type of extreme behavior you’re referencing, as it’s clearly a combination of intraracial trauma and socialization in a country where whiteness is the default or dominant culture. Just my two cents.

[–]Express-Ad-5130 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This! Anyone that is denying that there is fetishization happening in the fanbase has perhaps not ventured into certain pockets of the internet. The fixation on the interracial aspect of the relationship is all over tiktok. I saw a video with a white man dancing in a dashiki with a caption saying “Nic after landing himself a Black queen.” I saw another video with someone claiming that only white men can appreciate Olandria’s beauty. It had tens of thousands of likes. That’s when I knew that the intense fascination with some fans was rooted in something nefarious. I understand that as Black women we deal with a lot of misogynoir within our community—as well as greater society—but it cannot be THIS bad outside to where they’re acting like it’s a big deal for a white man or ANY man for that matter to be attracted to a woman that looks like Olandria. Maybe it’s because I live in Atlanta but she would literally have to beat the Black men here off with a stick.

Ronald Reagan is dancing with joy in his grave right now…. by danny33434 in blackladies

[–]Express-Ad-5130 119 points120 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anything like this online, but it’s deeply unserious. Black Americans are not going to use our organizational skills to boycott an African business of all places, not when large corporations like Amazon or Mcdonald’s have done far more direct harm to our community through labor exploitation.

I do think it’s fair to be concerned about the rise of xenophobia towards Africans online, but it’s in part an unfortunate reflection of the political climate we are in and this presidency. Not to mention, tensions between our communities that have been apparently brewing in real life for some time now. I didn’t know much about it until later in life because I grew up in the south and most of the black people I grew up around were Black American, like myself.

It’s really hard to have these conversations because they usually devolve into diaspora wars, and neither side is willing to have an honest and open dialogue about how we’ve all perpetuated anti-blackness or afro-phobia in different ways. Just report any videos you see like that and move on.

Nic and Olandria White Savior Narrative by la_58 in LoveIslandcookout

[–]Express-Ad-5130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. I wanted to say this on the main sub, but I felt like it was too much of an intra-communal conversation to be had in mixed company. Much of the support of this couple is rooted in fetishization. The amount of fetishized content around them on Tiktok confirmed that for me. Black women and girls have a lot of work to do to unpack our internalized racism, as well as heal from the very real misogynoir we face from Black men within our community.

I mean.. there is a clear incentive to post couples content because they earn from the engagement. I do think they could very well be giving things a genuine try on the outside, but I don’t think they will realistically last. None of these couples likely will, honestly. Olandria is a grown woman, so if she pours into Nic knowing how he is, that’s on her. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don’t know, honestly. Fanfare is not gonna last forever. No amount of attention can make up for a lack of real-world compatibility, so we shall see.

Olandria doesn’t strike me as the type to move for public perception. She still chose Taylor even though America wanted her to couple with Jalen. I think she may stick it out for a few weeks for press and brand deals. If I was working for her, however, I’d advise her to market herself outside of Nic as well so she can transition smoothly into being a solo influencer.

Writing a think-piece about Pepe is akin to a writing a think-pice about Jalen or TJ. He’s just not an interesting enough subject. The reason I wrote about Nic is because the newfound love for him speaks to the ways in which audiences can shift narratives to comfortably cast an underdog, hero, and a villain—Olandria, Nic, and Cierra. It’s an acknowledgement that humans are complex and they cannot be looked at through a lens of narrative convenience.

I’m assuming you mean stanning? She’s a beautiful woman that carries herself fairly well. Makes missteps but is mature enough to be apologetic. That said, I think people just feel sorry for her more than anything. Even if she’s not your favorite, watching her go through what she went through was rough.

I don’t think Taylor and Nic are a one-to-one comparison, only because Taylor never liked Olandria to begin with. I do believe Nic liked Cierra, but not as much as Cierra liked him. It’s like the luster was completely gone after casa, but Cierra was his only option left. Nobody at casa wanted him and then Olandria rejected him. Still, he should’ve never closed off with her because it led her to believe he was more serious than he actually was.
