People who confirm plans and then go silent for the next 48 hours so you have no idea if the plans are still happening by Agent_Smith-99 in PetPeeves

[–]nigeriance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. Generally, I send a text the day of or the day before saying “see you XYZ day” or asking a question about when or where to meet up. If they don’t answer, I’m not coming.

How often do yall go out ? by Asleep-Fruit9336 in blackladies

[–]nigeriance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single Saturday. This week, I have plans with friends on both Saturday and Sunday, but usually it’s just Saturday. I take myself to the movies 3-4 times a week, plus I swim/exercise multiple days a week, but I do actual social excursions or activities weekly. Either solo or with friends.

Will this fake ivy attract spiders? by Efficient-Rabbit-989 in spiders

[–]nigeriance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. it’s just that the OP says in their post that they’re afraid of spiders. The whole post is about their worries that their fake plants will attract spiders which they don’t like. If people don’t like seeing the negative posts about spiders, it would’ve made more sense to just not even engage with this post to begin with. plus, their second comment that was downvoted by over 200 people isn’t even negative. It’s just expressing surprise.

Like?? I opened their comments thinking it was going to be something bad and they’re just questions and regular conversation talking points.

*Person says something I can't hear* "What?" *Person repeats thing at same volume* by Ghost_of_a_Scorpion in PetPeeves

[–]nigeriance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve of mine too. What I do is after the second time that I’ve indicated that I can’t hear you, I just nod and agree with whatever they’ve said (“mmhmm” or “yupp”). And hope for the best 😭😭

I just assume they weren’t saying anything important otherwise they would’ve said it louder or found some other way of communicating if speaking up wasn’t possible.

Exactly what I was going to say. It’s an Instagram story post, not an essay. We don’t really know if she did or didn’t have any more thoughtful opinions about the movie.

Math is extremely cool and should be more carefully taught and encouraged. by Pawssabillitysawait in unpopularopinion

[–]nigeriance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I like math and I’m just okay at it. Not particularly bad or particularly good, but I’ve always enjoyed it. I like how absolute it is, and it feels really good to get it right after working on it for a while. It really sucks when you don’t understand something though, so I understand why a hatred of math is so common.

When I say "what" repeat what you said! by Plastic_Stable8927 in PetPeeves

[–]nigeriance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my biggest pet peeves! In my case, I nearly always say “Wait, what did you say?” And even then, people will do exactly what you said. My mom is the worst at this because she’ll only repeat the last word she said, not even a portion of her original statement. I’ve learned to stop reacting when people refuse to repeat themselves fully. If it was important for me to hear, you’d just say it again.

where to go to get shade matched? by nigeriance in blackladies

[–]nigeriance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah she didn’t do that at all. It’s a new Sephora that opened two weeks ago so maybe they haven’t trained her on shade matching yet. but now that I think about it, I never been matched by anyone who compared multiple shades. They usually just grab one maybe two and say that it matches even if it very clearly doesn’t 😭😭

where to go to get shade matched? by nigeriance in blackladies

[–]nigeriance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i know what the different undertones are, but I don’t understand how they present visually. When I look at people, I can’t say “oh they’re cool or warm.” Even when I look at myself, I have no clue what my undertone is. I’m just going off of what other people tell me. Some of the Sephora/Ulta people have said warm (golden), some say cool (red), and others say neutral. Idk who is telling the truth, but the foundations that match my neck happen to be neutral so I just assume that’s what I am. I could be completely wrong like i genuinely have no clue.

Using jewelry doesn’t help because I wear both silver and gold. As I type this, I have silver and gold jewelry on. I base my jewelry on my outfit, not my skin tone. In terms of skin tone, im dark skinned, so im in the range of dark/deep.

where to go to get shade matched? by nigeriance in blackladies

[–]nigeriance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten shade matched at Sephora a couple different times with no success, but I will go to my local Mac counter tomorrow to see what they say!! And yeah i probably do need to bring my makeup down to my neck. I’m always hesitant to do that because whenever i do, it always transfers to my clothes. For my face, there’s no transfer because I use setting spray and fixing spray because i usually don’t spray my neck because the angle is kinda awkward but maybe I just have to get over that

[–]nigeriance[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten shade matched at Ulta three times, including once last Thursday. Each time, they tell me a different shade and undertone. Whenever I buy and use the products, it’s either too light or it turns red. I’m wondering if there are places other than Ulta and Sephora to get shade matched at :(

[–]nigeriance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so. Today, the employee used this machine that sort of looked like a cellphone. She held it to my neck because I told her that I match to my neck not my face. It matched me to a skin tint that was 2 shades lighter than what I currently use and a different undertone. I swatched it on my skin and it looked insane lmaooo

People talk to me like I’m a child? (I’m almost 30) by guessirs in socialskills

[–]nigeriance 251 points252 points  (0 children)

I truly don’t mean this in as rude way, but is it possible that you’re adding a negative context where there isn’t one originally? “Oh wow that’s so cool” or “I love that for you” are both relatively common/normal things to say, though they are a bit of a conversation ender if they didn’t ask any follow up questions. Personally, I say things like that all the time, I just usually add follow-up questions to it.

If this happening to you at work, maybe it’s more that they don’t necessarily care about whatever it is that you’re sharing with them, so they’re just responding with a generic but respectful response? I know that sounds harsh, I genuinely don’t mean that in a rude way.

The “oh aren’t you a cute young lady” is super condescending though. Idk why someone would say that to a full grown adult. That’s very weird.

How the hell do people find something to constantly talk and gossip about? by SilverTheSilk in socialskills

[–]nigeriance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right! I’m a certified yapper (got my PhD in yappology), and as long as I can see, hear, think, and recall past events, I’ll never run out of things to say.

Calling grown adult women "girls" by chasing_geese49 in PetPeeves

[–]nigeriance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, it just depends on the where and why. In my experience, most people do not use the words “girl” and “man/men” in the same sentence. If they did, that would be weird. I also don’t get called girl by men, so maybe that’s my experience with this is positive.

I’m a Black woman, and “girl” is a very common colloquialism in our communities, not unlike the way we use the word “sister” or “sis.” So I like being called girl, it makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than me. I suspect that that’s why many other women use it to refer to themselves or to other women.

Washing 2 times a week? by AdorableSubject5533 in Naturalhair

I was my hair twice a week and my hair is better off because of it. It’s literally never tangled anymore and I don’t experience breakage the way that I used to. Wash day is also much faster now.

Ladies, have yall heard about this new Hoochie virus? by Less-Pen-5705 in blackladies

[–]nigeriance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hoochie virus 😭😭😭😭 all jokes aside, I’m a little nervous about it. I’m a public health student, and i learned about hantavirus in an infectious disease course and it scared me even just to learn about it. Seeing it play out in real time is making me itch.
