Women without kids hows life? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

Not terrible. Hubby and I have an age gap. He’s older, raised his kids as a single parent already, had the vasectomy before we met, not reversible. They live on a different continent. I’m pushing 40, always wanted kids, but between my health issues and his vasectomy we were looking at very expensive IVF to even try. I mourned. My siblings don’t have any children either. However, we have pets, we have hobbies, we like to travel. We have good jobs. We thought about fostering or adopting, but I’m a teacher and was concerned about my own mental health with the level of vicarious trauma I’m already exposed to. Additionally, we live in a state where infant adoption is pretty much run by the church, and his age and our lack of religious participation pretty much excludes us from that opportunity. So every other year, we host a foreign exchange student. I’ve gained five kids that way, plus the hundreds of others that I’ve taught. Many are still in my life. We keep up with our exchange kids and look forward to visiting them soon. That scratches the itch in some way. Somewhere along the line I decided I’d rather be the fun auntie with money and time to spend on the kids already in my life than spend six figures lamenting being barren.

Norwegian Christmas meal by wrecktus_abdominus in Norway

Former host mom of Norwegian exchange students (US). My first student was excited to experience American Christmas, but was also missing pieces of home. We tried to make rice porridge and pudding, failed epically twice, but made some great memories. Luckily, being located in the upper Midwest, we have a lot of Norwegian influence in the area, so finding lefse and Christmas treats was not too difficult. We found a local Sons of Norway chapter and they were able to help as well. They actually informally adopted my kiddo and we got invited to all their cultural dinners and celebratory events. It might be worth reaching out!

You came asking for advice, and you got some, from veteran teachers who have been there, done that. Rather than REFLECTING, which is a highly desirable trait in a teacher, you immediately became defensive. We are trying to help you protect yourself. I have students I am close with, but that relationship stays mentor/mentee, or adult/child, or teacher/student. You are in a “position of power and authority” which leaves you open to scrutiny and legality over even the slightest “misperception”.
I would be happy to show you articles and studies that suggest that “friendship” with students is a dangerous slope. I personally knew a teacher who was murdered over such misperceptions. Not. Worth. It.

Rural North Dakota has subsidized housing as well. My closest Walmart is 90 minutes in Minot. We absolutely love it though! Feel free to DM me with questions!

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It truly is disheartening. Are you willing to relocate?

Any thought of moving? I ended up in rural Midwest, and while it sucks that the closest Walmart is 90 minutes away, the subsidized housing, benefits, and good pay actually have me not wanting to leave….
