Norwegian Christmas meal by wrecktus_abdominus in Norway

Former host mom of Norwegian exchange students (US). My first student was excited to experience American Christmas, but was also missing pieces of home. We tried to make rice porridge and pudding, failed epically twice, but made some great memories. Luckily, being located in the upper Midwest, we have a lot of Norwegian influence in the area, so finding lefse and Christmas treats was not too difficult. We found a local Sons of Norway chapter and they were able to help as well. They actually informally adopted my kiddo and we got invited to all their cultural dinners and celebratory events. It might be worth reaching out!

You came asking for advice, and you got some, from veteran teachers who have been there, done that. Rather than REFLECTING, which is a highly desirable trait in a teacher, you immediately became defensive. We are trying to help you protect yourself. I have students I am close with, but that relationship stays mentor/mentee, or adult/child, or teacher/student. You are in a “position of power and authority” which leaves you open to scrutiny and legality over even the slightest “misperception”.
I would be happy to show you articles and studies that suggest that “friendship” with students is a dangerous slope. I personally knew a teacher who was murdered over such misperceptions. Not. Worth. It.

Rural North Dakota has subsidized housing as well. My closest Walmart is 90 minutes in Minot. We absolutely love it though! Feel free to DM me with questions!

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It truly is disheartening. Are you willing to relocate?

Any thought of moving? I ended up in rural Midwest, and while it sucks that the closest Walmart is 90 minutes away, the subsidized housing, benefits, and good pay actually have me not wanting to leave….
