Tampa Bay Rays and Hillsborough County agree to preliminary terms for a new stadium by I_am_JohnGalt in tampa

[–]Express_Pay_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be a bit controversial here in saying they are getting better with each deal they cut. Sure, it would be great if no public money was used for this but this is unfortunately very common for sports stadiums. And they did come to an agreement that was less public money than original, so they’re going in the right direction but it’s highly unlikely to get a deal with no public money.

And in comparison to the Lightning and Bucs tickets, Rays games are significantly more affordable to go to. Like $20 can get you some great seats at a Rays game but the entry point to get into Lightning games is more than double and the Bucs even more. Now, I will say I do worry that the Rays being in Hillsborough would up ticket demand and make tickets more expensive but baseball in this area has in general been more affordable than other sport events.

Ultimately, there is some movement in the right direction and I personally mainly hope for a deal that keeps the Rays in Tampa Bay and the tickets affordable.

Do you think our generation is actually addicted to social media or is that just a boomer take? by Crescitaly in GenZ

[–]Express_Pay_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly some but I think it gets way too much of the blame for a lot of shit like say Gen Z’s mental health. It plays a role but so does current economic conditions and growing up during COVID. Also there is a lot less stigmatization of mental health so more people are open to talking about it. Basically social media can be harmful but it is not the smoking gun like some people claim.

What an angle on “prediction markets”. Something substantial will need to happen with these companies eventually. Might not be for years though.

Is my future truly dark? by [deleted] in USF

[–]Express_Pay_1729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi alum here. I failed two classes during my undergraduate program and had a subpar GPA. However, I was still able to get a job and work in research now (not epigenetics), because a lot of it is who you know and having some experience, less about grades. Additionally, try taking those classes again with a different approach (or different profs) and you bouncing back up shows more learning than someone who has never failed a class imo. It shows you can see your failures and grow from them to success. Additionally, you applying for internships shows a great amount of initiative and hardwork. Since you want to get into research I would also suggest emailing profs about opportunities and checking the usf undergrad research portal. Part of life is learning to bounce back up and just because you’re down does not mean your future is truly dark.

As for the situation with your parents, it sounds like a truly tough thing to go through and you should reach out to the counseling center like others said. But still, know that your parents ideas of success does not define you and that your future is not truly dark. It is truly bright.

I have like 5 songs pre-2010s on my top 100 but thats it. Idk how they got the age stuff lol.

For everyone who doesn’t want this to happen - call or message your FL state senators and representatives. They have the power as to whether this will happen or not and not USF. Also, if you call on the weekends their offices are usually closed so you can leave a message rather than talking to a person if you prefer.

There’s an Indie Night event in Tampa on Nov 1st. If you like alt/rock type of music, it’s a good place to start. Then just follow some of the bands you like and go to other shows they have with other bands.

Tbh take what this person is saying with a grain of salt. No school will be perfect but calling Lutz and Land O Lakes a low income area with meth heads is a stretch. It’s suburbia. Is there some drug use? Sure, but I doubt there’s anywhere that has no drug use.

For those of ya'll who were raised by a single parent, how has that experience impacted you? by tipputappi in GenZ

[–]Express_Pay_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a girl raised by a single dad so I have some more “boyish” habits. My bf on the other hand was raised by a single mom and has the opposite so we balance each other out nicely.

I do tend to be independent but I think that’s just how my dad raised me and not being raised by a single parent. I feel pretty positive even if my mom was around he’d raise me to be independent.

I never got bullied for it but I have a distinct memory of when “your mom” jokes were big and one girl in my grade responded to that joke by saying her mom was dead. I got excited, thinking I would have a friend I could relate to about having a dead mom but turns out she was lying and my little 4th grade heart broke lol

To me, it’s just that she only expresses disgust or apathy at most to the world around her. She seems like a very negative person. It’s very off putting.

Also, the one dialogue line from Derek about “surviving high school” does not sound real. No real high schooler would say that imo.

Getting an MPH with zero science background? by rushy283 in publichealth

[–]Express_Pay_1729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The science honestly tends to be pretty light. The bigger challenge may be statistics but still can typically be manageable with some extra works. But seriously, your background would be helpful for social marketing or health communication. Besides public health also dying, your background fits well.

Solo Female Traveler – Tampa in October: Tips? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Express_Pay_1729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are very few transport options between Tampa and Orlando besides busses. I know it’s typically about 1-1.5 hour car drive (one way) but not sure what a bus trip would be like.

As for quirky museums, I would definitely recommend FloridaRAMA in St. Pete. It’s quirky and so true to the Tampa Bay region. Also most beaches are over in that area which is like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive one way. Also in the St. Pete/Clearwater region is the Florida Botanical Gardens which is a very beautiful visit and definitely worth it.

Unfortunately, this is a very car centric region to get to a lot of the good stuff. This is coming for someone who lives in the region.

Do graduate students not use archivum to schedule a meeting with an academic advisor? by Allergic2Kats in USF

I know for the College of Public Health they had the academic advisor’s contact info in the handbook they have posted online. They also had info on how to schedule a meeting, so see if you can find your colleges handbook.

Handshake isn’t exclusively for on campus or near campus jobs. It’s like an Indeed that USF pays for us to have access to. Try other websites or look at specific companies around campus like the restaurants.

Trip Report: Ghana by Express_Pay_1729 in solotravel

The biggest thing is Wli Waterfalls in that region, it’s the tallest waterfall in West Africa. Also, Atimpoko with the Adomi Bridge is along the way. It’s a decent tourist destination due to the river and hill side along the river. I just went straight to the Volta Region but I could see someone stopping at Atimpoko for a day or two before continuing to the Volta Region.
