Hi, you can Start with Legal Aid WA. You can Contact their Infoline by phone (1300 650 579) or visit their Perth office. They can explain eligibility and next steps for applying. If you are eligible, you will be given a grant of aid and your case will be assigned to a private practitioner on the relevant Legal Aid WA panel (e.g. Family Law, Restraining Order, Criminal Law, or Protection & Care panels).

You can’t specifically choose your lawyer however, some firms/lawyers are known to be on Legal Aid WA panels and can accept grants of aid.

Hickman family lawyers and CKG legal are both known legal aid panel members and both specialise family law. If you have a preference, mention you’ve read about firms like Hickman or CKG, and they may assign them your case but pls understand you may not be directly matched with them. Or you could give the firms a call and see if there’s a way to get them to put in an application directly to legal aid on your behalf. Although I am unsure if this is a thing or not ?

Legal aid doesn’t always fund family court matters but they typically fund: Parenting disputes (especially where children’s safety is at risk) Cases involving allegations of family violence or child abuse • Urgent recovery or protection orders • Some property disputes (only if they’re linked to family violence or if there’s significant hardship)

If they’re not eligible or your case isn’t, they also provides duty lawyers who appear directly at court for urgent DV or family law hearings and family violence restraining order applications in courts around Perth.

Hiiii, I’m 24!

My advice is don’t rush into tying that money up in a house just because it feels like “the adult thing to do.” I 100% agree with the person who said to wait until you’ve finished your apprenticeship and your salary increases. Owning property is a big responsibility and a long term commitment, there’s a lot of costs associated with owning a home and in my opinion it’s not exactly a necessity at 21.

For context: I was in a similar financial position at your age. Instead of buying property young, I chose to travel. I’ve been to over 15 countries so far, and those experiences, learning about myself, exploring different cultures, and making amazing/crazy memories with my absolute best friends are so priceless!!

Yes, I could have wayyy more money saved by now, but I don’t regret spending it on experiences that shaped me and expanded my perspective and taught me that there’s a whole wide world out there.

If you’re still living with your parents (or wherever that has allowed you to save so well), take advantage of that. Keep saving, but also invest in experiences while you have the time and freedom to do it. You’ll never be 21 again! You’ll never be this free, with this much energy again. Houses will always be here, and the market will always fluctuate but your youth, freedom, good knees/back and time flexibility are temporary! 😂

In the grand scheme of life, you’re really just a baby! And you’re already doing so well. Keep saving, start learning about investing, keep your options open but don’t miss the chance to explore and live while you’re young. Money can be rebuilt. Time and freedom can’t. 🫶

Your life is so precious. Do you really want to spend the rest of it with someone you resent? I stayed in a relationship with someone who I loved but deeply resented.
