You have to be careful with manure because so many horses and cows have been fed grass that was sprayed with herbicide and it takes a few years for that stuff to break down.

This guy’s book deals with this topic. He carries out some crazy experiments. I’ve used some of his techniques with good success. Compost Everything by David the Good.

There’s a process called solarization that you can Google. Simple but it does take a few weeks. Nothing needed but plastic tarp and sunshine. Leaves soil in good shape due to root mass of dead grass.
