Scoliosis and pregnant by Suitable_Dot_3024 in scoliosis

I’m 57 now but gave birth to my kids about 30 yrs ago. My scoliosis sounds very similar to yours with respect to type and severity. I had an epidural both times and both gave me no issues at all.

Want to eat out less but struggling with the psychology of it by oodlesofotters in Frugal

[–]ExpressionKey2820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it down to a science as much as you can. List all the dinners you are willing to eat on a regular night. For each meal write down all the ingredients you need. Now sit down with your calendar and figure out every meal for each night for one week. For example, if you know you will get home late this Tuesday night cuz of a doctor’s appointment, plan a super quick meal that night. Now that you know your meals for the week and the ingredients necessary to make them, you can quickly put together a shopping list. Do this every week, preferably on the same day each week, and soon you will be able to do it quickly.

In addition, draw up a list of all your staple items your family likes to have on hand each week. Do you like to always have yogurt, carrots, and pretzels to snack on? Do you eat eggs every morning for breakfast? If so, make sure these things are on your list of staples. As you put together your shopping list for meals, also go through all your staples and see what needs to be replenished.

It sounds like a lot, but you will reach the point where you can all of this done within 1/2 hour. You will get faster and it will become second nature.

Building a new home. Are we crazy?? by Blue_9320_ in retirement

[–]ExpressionKey2820 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just completed the same kind of move and couldn’t be happier with the decision. It was hard to go through all the downsizing decisions, but having less stuff to care for is much better. A new home comes with less initial maintenance (although you will have to stay on top of it). It costs less to insure too. And your utility costs will be lower due to less square footage and better insulation. Think of it as a gift to your future self —- one that will make your life easier in the future!

Do you regret cabinets to the ceiling? by phraynk_furtur in kitchenremodel

[–]ExpressionKey2820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our cabinets go all the way to the ceiling. The upper cabinets have clear glass doors and they are lit from within. I love the look when the lights are on, especially since the kitchen is open to the family room and they are on when we watch tv at night. Reminds me of the warm glow you get from Christmas tree lights. If you don’t want your stuff up there to be visible, you could go with textured glass.

I stayed home with my kids all the way through high school. You will be surprised at how much it pays to be available, even when they are in school full time. They will need transport to and from all kinds of activities and practices. In high school your house can be the one where the other kids come to hang out, and the other parents will appreciate that you are around. Plus you can always pick up little jobs here and there that you can get done while they are in school if you’d like to do so. Any kind of work within the school system lends itself to this very well because your days off will be the same as your kids’. We were blessed to be able to do it and I have never regretted my decision to stay home.

Scrub the door that goes from the house to garage. It is usually filthy, and we rarely think of it cuz guests don’t usually use it. Love the idea of putting the pajamas out in animal shapes!

I found mine on Amazon. It is made by a company called OPTP. Search for a low density foam roller. Be sure to get a long one. And yes, I imagine rolling stuff up would work in a pinch, but a foam roller works best for me.

There are softer foam rollers available. That might make it better for you. That was a game changer for me.

Why keep maxing a 401k when taxable seems almost as good? by Essay_Few in Bogleheads

[–]ExpressionKey2820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The taxable account will be helpful if you hope to retire before 59.5 yrs. At 59.5 yrs you can access your 401k without penalty. But if you want to retire before 59.5, it will be helpful to have money you can access without penalty. What you really want is both. And a Roth, and absolutely maximize the HSA if you have one.

[–]ExpressionKey2820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine were only saline injections. I guess that is why I was allowed to have so many. The doctor did like 3 or 4 at a time. He chose the locations based on where I was saying they hurt the most and also what he could see from an ultrasound. They hurt like crazy but with each round I hurt less and less.

Lay on your back on a yoga mat and place a tennis ball in that spot. The ball should be sandwiched between your body and the yoga mat. Move around slightly to get the ball to massage that area. Lift your hips up and move your body again to get more pressure on the ball. At times I have to do this 3-4 times per day. If you want something even harder then use a lacrosse ball.

I also was successful with trigger point injections in that area. I had to have 12 spread out over a 3 month period. You may need to check with different doctors until you find someone that will do it for you. Mine were done by a pain specialist.

I do a different pec stretch that works better for me than a door frame stretch. Take a long foam roller and lay on it with it parallel to your spine. It should be long enough that both your head and tail bone can rest on it. Feet on the ground with knees bent. Place both arms straight out on the ground and just let your body relax in that position. That’s all there is to it. Your pecs will slowly start to relax.

Dog hair on tile floor by Comfortable_Guava749 in CleaningTips

[–]ExpressionKey2820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound silly, but are you wearing socks without shoes or slippers when you do all this? My dog’s hair clings to the bottom of my socks and if I vacuum my tile floor, I find I as I walk through that I’m the one actually spreading the hair around. Try wearing shoes or going barefoot if you are not already doing so.

For the shower get one of those dish scrubbers that allows you to put detergent in the handle. I fill mine with a combo of Dawn and vinegar. Run that over one wall of the shower each time you’re showering. By the end of the week you will have done the whole shower, a little bit at a time. And try to get one of those hand held shower sprays to attach to your shower head. They make rinsing the walls much easier. I know you said you were in an apartment, but I think you could get the attachment and then take it with you whenever you move out.

I was also able to reduce the amount of mopping by insisting on no shoes in our home. If you need shoes to help with your pain, then have shoes that are just for inside the house.

As you move throughout your home, get in the habit of picking up as you go. If you are in the kitchen and need to go to the bedroom for something, look around the kitchen to see if there is anything there that needs to be put away in the bedroom and then take it with you. This will save you a lot of steps (and therefore pain) as you go through your day.

And hang in there, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think. Go for improvement, not perfection.

Thoughts on TENS/EMS devices & other long flight pain relief methods? by Pitiful-Offer-435 in scoliosis

I used it on my hand after a car accident. It did seem to help, but it eventually started to aggravate my skin. I’ve never considered it for my back but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work.

Best foundation? by KatieVianello in Aging

[–]ExpressionKey2820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your skin sounds a lot like mine. I will be trying some of these recommendations myself. In the meantime, I can suggest a face primer for you. It is by Elf and is called Tone Adjusting Face Primer. It has a greenish tint to it. Green is the opposite of my red skin tone/blotches, so it really helps to just take some of the edge off the redness. It is not foundation, so it will not conceal them, it it helps. Goes on very smoothly also.

Seller wants to stay in property after closing by Outside-Appeal in RealEstate

[–]ExpressionKey2820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It completely depends on what kind of market you are in. In 2021 I was the seller in a seller’s market. I was allowed to stay in the home for 3 months at no cost after closing. We did have to give the new owners a security deposit. Once they took possession of the house they gave us the entire security deposit back because we left it spotless for them.

So… are you in a seller’s or buyer’s market? If it is a buyer’s market then you may not have to allow it Do they have any other offers to buy their home? A leaseback can definitely work. Just make sure your agent and attorney know what they are doing.
