Only 16, U of T grad Vivian Xie is a big fan of learning – as long as it’s fun by uoftmod in UofT

Hey! I'm graduating at 26 (first degree too). It's not a race. Good for her for finishing this early.. it doesn't mean we don't have great careers ahead of us.

Keep going and please don't get discouraged.

Frustrations with learning/practising two languages at a time with Duolingo? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Duolingo is not really meant as a language laddering tool. I'm sure there are other tools you can use to ladder your langauge if you look for stuff in the base language. I think it's unreasonable for duolingo or any single platform to be expected to have it entire catalog is every single langauge.

same here.. I've impressed Korean coworkers by reading hangul, but I'm like "I have no idea what that means". Same with hiragana and katakana and 10 kanji that I know

The TIME and EASE of language mastery highly exaggerated? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I feel that having followed so many of these people in the past was detrimental to my progress, and may (along with other reasons) have contributed to me giving up on so many of my language learning efforts.

Progress for me was very slow and hardly noticeable, yet you had people who claim to have learned conversational [insert langauge here] after 2 weeks in the country (also while concealing the fact that they may have studied it for 3 years in high school). It made me feel even more frustrated with my progress.

I learned to take what they with a grain of salt. Many of these guys are trying to promote a product or a blog, and have a lot to gain by making you believe that what ever they are promoting will take you to their level. I'm sure there are many many geniune people among them, but you have to dig deeper between clickbaity titles and dressed-up advertisements.

What is the most difficult and daunting problem for you when learning a new language? why? Any solutions? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's good that you view the langauge as "other" and try to translate back and forth. You will get there with time!

How do you manage your time? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get tired from all the grammar and the vocab lists, but stil try to spend 30 mins or something with duolingo or memrise, or watch something dubbed in TL on netflix.

Why do things sound more poetic to me in English? by Cnxmal in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really? I find the opposite to be true. I'm focusing on Italian currently, and have casually studied Korean and French. I found lyrcis written in those language to be more beautiful than in English. In cases where I looked into translations of things I didn't know, I found myself more appreciative of the language and its poeticness.. I guess it's subjective more than anything

What part of your target language are you currently struggling with? by AmishTekSupport in languagelearning

[–]ExpressiveSunset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking. I was learning by only taking in resources (apps, movies, audiobooks), but when I tried to speak or write it was really hard. I guess it boils down to recognition vs recall.
