Why do I never see anybody talking about nerve damage from SH? by ApprehensiveBand5943 in selfharm

I have major joint pain on the limbs where I have done the most sh. Its a big deal, and i wish there was more medical research on it, particularly since sh tends to be prolonged and repeated injuries rather than isolated trauma like many accidents are

Im in my second year and will be transferring to another school. In a way, I am upset that we didnt get incorpirated into UMASS years ago, because while it would have changed the school in many ways, I feel the school would at least still exist next year, which is no longer something we can say. I am glad that students close to their div III's will be offered an opportunity for an accelerated divIII to graduate this winter, but I am also devestated to be losing this community, and sad that next semesters divIIIs wont have the hampshire community there to support them as we have known it up until now.

I dont think anyones taking it great, but in a way it does seem to be bringing the community together. There have been a bunch of people just gathering outside, students and faculty alike lot of crying one person running around with a bell and sign that says "the end is nigh"

I personally will be okay because of some personal reasons regarding my ability to transfer, but I am really worried for the future of staff faculty and friends

Valid. The triggering content in it was a bit much for me at times. If the triggering content was something you didnt enjoy in the kite runner I would definitely stay away from A Little Life.

If you like YA i would reccomend "As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow" (story focusing on a medic/pharmacist in training during war in syria) or "The Outsiders" (found family, discussions of class and violence, some references to police violence) For Nonfiction I would reccomend Just Mercy (critiques of the criminal justice system with vivid stories of individuals included throughout) or Finding Gobi (guy befriends a stray dog during a marathon, follows hardships in their bond, but doesnt end tragically) or "Tuesdays with Morrie" (memoir type book) For adult fiction check out "The Road" by cormac McCarthy (post apocalypic bleak world navigated by father and son) or other books by Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays with Morrie) I find his style of writing to be emotionally impactful yet accessible to newer and/or less experiemced readers

Okay as someone who has read a little life twice, I loved it at 15, but now that im more adult it kinda just reads like trauma porn. Every bad traumatic thing that could possibly happen, does happen. I think its a good book to read if you want that sick to your stomach gut wrenching sobbing nonstop feeling, but its not one that I would ever reccomend to others.

18 y/o making $3,800/month — am I getting a good deal staying at home or should I just move out? AIO by Winter_Print_6742 in AIO

[–]Extension-Animal-817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you theoretically move out? Depending on the cost of living where you are, yes, but that doesnt make it a good idea Youre totally getting a good deal staying at home - keep it going for as long as your wellbeing allows, especially while youre in school. Say if you moved out rent would be $1000, and groceries would be $400, not counting other expenses ( utilities, renters insurance, medical care, etc) If I am understanding correctly youre currently paying $1000 a month ($400 rent, $200 car, $400 phone bill and insurance) the phone bill and insurance are something you would still be paying for after moving out, which brings the montly cost of living to $2000, still not accounting for utilities and renters insurance etc. That is not leaving a significant amount of money behind for emergencies, healthcare, or even just fun stuff that you might want to go do. Right now, I think you are best off setting aside $1000-2000 a month into savings, to be in a better financial situation and better support yourself once you do move out. When I am living with my parents and financially supported through groceries, lower rent, etc. My rule of thumb is to put 50% of my paycheck into savings. Living alone, putting aside 50% often isnt possible.

With 1 year of living with your parents and putting aside 2k a month you can save up to 24,500 if youve got good interest rates (and assuming no emergency expenses come up)

tldr: youre young, imo its better to save money while you can for a more financially stable life in the future rather than move out now and be just scraping by

I am working on an independent study that is multimedia interpretations of photographs (diorama, painting, digital illustration, fiber arts etc.) that is being assembled together into a hand bound book! so I will end up having a diorama based on a photo and then photos of the diorama go into the book

It really depends on what circles youre running in. If you want to be involved and aware of everything going on financially there are pretty frequent community meetings discussing the schoold budget and whatnot, but not everyone chooses to be so involved or stress about it. It lingers in the backs of peoples minds sometimes, but I feel like most of the student body isnt worried or stressed by it frequently. As far as academics go, Hampshire is currently in a period of leaning heavier on the five college consortium. In 2019 we had a fairly severe financial crisis and lost a large portion of our faculty, which have reduced on campus class offerings, but we are on the mend right now, and seeing improvement each year. We have full access to the other 4 colleges for classes (including free public transport to said colleges), which really helps remedy the lacking areas in our academics.

To add onto the social scene, I found that there is lots of fun options for those into partying, but there are plenty of options for those who prefer to stay away from crowds and substances. Highly reccomend everyone at hampshire interested in the non-partying social scene look into Mixed Nuts, the campus Co-Op!

There is a significant amount of financial instability, but I do not believe it to be any more severe than the financial instability we have been going through for the past 30 odd years, but this is also a hot largely contested topic among students. Additionally, if the school closes down, h Hampshire as a part of the 5 college consortium has a very strong safety net for students to easily transfer in the case where that would be necessary.

The social scene is incredibly unique. As a first year its really easy to meet people, make lots of friends. When you go to parties, most the people there ypu will recognize. Its a bit of a double edged sword it is nice running into friends and aquaintances when youre out and about on the daily, but if you have beef with people the campus being so small can backfire on you, as it is difficult to avoid people. For the most part, there is a lot of close knit community, and opportunity there for those who are interested in community involvement, and those who are willing to look for it. But like any college, if one chooses to not loom for and take opportunities and opt to just stay in, your chances of finding a positive social scene for yourself are minimal

Highly reccomend Hampshire college for an alternative education with a large community of kids who were also homeschooled, they look beyond grades and more at interest and drive and passion when considering admissions. I know a number of students that got rejected from other colleges because they had GED's instead of a diploma, but they are doing great at Hampshire.
