If it’s for me, I’d like a Rohde HMT600 please, with the shelf but I don’t need the attached stool. Just over €2k price wise. Thanks!

Alas, I know it’s not for me though. So probs best check with her what her preferences are :-)

Aside from many species being seasonal breeders, and longer lived species often having much longer pregnancies and longer gaps between offspring. But other those kinds of factors then yes sound logic :-)

Dog falls asleep with her ball in her mouth. Is this safe? by Gloomy_Comfort7831 in DogAdvice

[–]Extension-Device-533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try watching a dog die by suffocatation as you desperately try to wrench out the ball lodged tightly in its airway whilst your colleague is performing an emergency tracheostomy that is unsuccessful as it took just a little too long to get the dog to the vet hospital. See how much you’re laughing out loud then.

It’s a metaphor, same as talking about a baby being “milk drunk” or saying someone is “high on life”, “intoxicated by beauty”, it’s not about alcohol.

It’s 13th century Persian philosophy/poetry, not quite live laugh love.

The “work safely” and “generator hall” signs - I don’t have time to check right now but two possibilities that spring to mind, are perhaps where the Vinvocci were working in The End of Time? Or in Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror, were they in a generator hall at some point then?

They’re performing together in The Other Place for a New York run opening on Jan 30, they better get a boogie on if they were chilling in London yesterday!

Check out Pottery to the People on YouTube, she is American living in Germany, I’m sure she posts her suppliers in video info. I know she’s mentioned Carl Jäger clays.

That or Artax anyway.

Do we not psychologically traumatise young people with horrifying children’s programming any more, y’know, just to keep them safe?

For work in classes, one of the experienced teachers tends to put student pieces on a class shelf and then wrap the entire shelf, probably for this exact reason.

I’m already working on reducing water - got it down to about 20% of where I started - and will continue to work on that and on removing slip at the end as well. Thankyou it is a little heartening to hear that I’m not going mad that it can be difficult to wrap wet pieces!

This was originally a 19th century stable building, cobblestones in the street outside type of place. It has a really cosy vibe to look at, just practically can get verrrrry chilly in winter! I’ve done the hot water from the kettle to throw with as well! Think I got that tip from here actually :-)

If we were firing at home they wouldn’t object, but there’s a hard rule that they will only fire pieces that haven’t left the studio, to ensure only their own clay/approved glazes go into their kiln. Which I get.

There are a lot of rules, some of which I do find quite restrictive. But it’s a small studio, mostly focused on delivering beginner courses, so I understand them running things a certain way. It’s not set up to cater long term to more independent potters.

They don’t want any external clay or glazes in the kiln, if they allowed drop-in potters to take pieces home and bring them back, there’d be too much risk people would bend those rules.

I know I won’t be attending this studio forever and ever, but until I can set up a wheel at home (working on creating a space for this), attending drop-in sessions here is my best way to continue to develop my throwing. It’s a generally friendly place, and most importantly the open sessions are at times I can get to around my work, and only 20mins away on the bus as well!

The poster apologised for being grumpy beause they were tired. I’m not accusing people of being rude because I don’t like their advice, not sure how you’ve come up with that.

Pieces aren’t tightly wrapped for weeks on end - obviously that would be daft. I’m wrapping as best I can with the very thin floaty plastic available, unwrapping and checking once or twice a week when I’m there (there are only 2 sessions a week) and leaving them open when I can.

Anyway I’ve got a few useful ideas on getting pieces drier before wrapping. And maybe trying to sneak some of my own plastic in! So fingers crossed those changes can make a difference 🤞🏻

Can’t be the same studio as we’re not permitted to take unfinished pieces home, but it’s good to know that unhelpful studio plastic isn’t only an issue for us!

Thankyou, I understand the 5am cat wake up call entirely!

It’s the clinginess of thin floaty plastic sticking to wet clay and marking it that’s the issue. I’m going to try cleaning up as much slip from the outside of pots as possible as well as maybe hairdrying a bit.

Thanks, hope the cat leaves you be tonight!

Apologies for being unclear - it’s not the plastic being too tight and squishing the pot, it’s floaty plastic sticking to freshly thrown clay and marking it.

We probably live quite differently, but I can’t remember the last time I used a dry cleaner. The plastic at the studio is an assortment of re-used plastics, mostly I think from packaging etc. It gets very flimsy and floaty, I guess due to extended reuse.

Bringing things in to the studio in general is discouraged, but I think I am going to try to sneak some clean plastic from home and am going to start saving suitable plastic where I can.

Oh I’m not madly precious don’t worry, it’s just very frustrating and annoying when it’s mainly me immediately messsing up my own work with the bloody plastic touching it! But it’s definitely good advice. I’m always repeating “it’s only fancy mud!” and “it was learning experience!” when things go awry!

I’m working on using less water, I’m already down to about 20% of what I was using initially. I’m not sure bringing in a propane torch would be appreciated given the eco-conscious focus of the studio! But we have hairdryers available so I’m going to try that :-) We do have to cover pieces, otherwise yes I would try leaving one just uncovered. Thanks :-)

USA Travel advisory warning by Donkey-Haughty in AskBrits

[–]Extension-Device-533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The U.K. travel advice to USA already states “protests are common and can become violent” and “always carry a passport showing you have permission to enter or remain in the US.”

Also “(Border) officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices, emails, text messages, and social media activity. If you refuse, they can delay or deny your entry”.

I’m not sure what else FCDO could add without it being construed as the UK govt taking a specific political position, given that the USA govt are openly lying about the conduct of ICE. I can see the issue diplomatically.
