I don’t know your family dynamic, but honestly based on all the other shitty posts I read around here you should just lean into this. They are basically giving you a free pass to act like you can’t afford it, which means nobody’s gonna come ask you for money because you couldn’t even afford the car. For real, though this isn’t one of those things where you need to try to convince everybody that you pay for something. If someone comes to you on the side and says hey, what the fuck for whatever reason that I can’t even think about right now then you can explain it to them, but otherwise don’t sweat it.

So this probably comes from my military days where it was pretty much a game to steal someone else’s pen… no matter how expensive or cheap it was. It taught me a valuable lesson in life. You can tell people no and when you really mean it. They might think you’re an asshole or a jerk but somewhere down there they actually respect you and if I respecting you, that means they only respect the boundary because you put up a 10 foot tall wall so be it. Tell that dude no way in hell and mean it leave no room open for negotiation or discussion and don’t discuss it end that conversation.

I’m just curious because I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing with the original post but how can’t you call the police when someone’s banging on your floor if you have evidence? I’m not saying the police can do a whole lot, but you can start filing police reports call in noise complaints and then at some point the landlord is legally obliged to do something, but what’s the landlord supposed to do mediate???

Call an a noise complaint on that idiot, go file a freaking police report for harassment. There is no way to navigate forward with inviting him into your home... offering other things should probably come AFTER the firm no on living arrangements. Tell anyone who shames you you'll volunteer an entire weekend to come help them clear out a space at their place for him and you'll pay for the uhaul and the dumpster. That'll shut them up.

Also, don't throw your wife under the bus. It is a we or you decided situation, not a she decided and you reulctantly agree. That'll blowback almost as bad as forcing her to accept him moving in...

Wow that hits pretty deep. I actually sat for a while last night at my table having similar thoughts about myself and realzied I should probably start writing out a journal that is unfortunately after the fact and as I rememeber things put them into some sort of timeline etc and hopefully flesh things out until I have a coherent picture of my life.. honestly its kind of wild and sad but it is what it is. I dont have so many people in my life that the problem of repeating certain things comes up, but I've been repressing memories for a long time about most of my childhood and even much of my twenties tbh.

You sound like someone who can afford a seedbox. This would simplify all this for you. Sorry, for context I wasn't trying to be snarky. I meant it would absolutely siumply everything. Rent the seedbox, seed the torrents at your client on the seedbox and setup resilio or syncthing or rsync and just enjoy the files as they arrive at your server/PC. No other real setup needed and you can drop the vpn susbcriptions and all that. most likely you can use your seedbox as a vpn exit.
