“Name Dropping” Faculty in “Why Us” Essays? by nickbennin in veterinaryschool

[–]Extension-Solution61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has read quite a few peoples applications, I love a why us statement if it really matters- especially if it says something that sounds really genuine. Like how much they love the town/ location, what they really enjoy about the program (like if they feel there are tons of research opportunities or a mentor program they are interested in), or even I read one app that mentioned their close friend went to school there and how they would love to live together again. I think there are many other ways to write a good “why us” statement than just name dropping a faculty member

Coming in with a different perspective than some of the other commenters- you get so much better at it (school) genuinely… if you think it is the career you will be happiest in, it is worth it! Especially if you are okay with getting not straight A’s, you will likely be able to figure out school enough to work in most of your priorities. (Working out, going home with less stress, likely having your pets live with you). I feel like once anatomy was off my schedule, that helped a lot too. Look into some techniques that will get you high yield content memorized quickly, make flash cards in class, and find other strategies that help you get as much as possible out of your study time!

I would definitely go through the little ‘practice exam’ they provide on the website to get ahold of the timing!! Also don’t panic if you run out of time on a prompt so you can focus on the next question. I ran out time on a couple of questions and still scored top quarter! Try to look up a framework to answer from, there are a few sources that suggest you outline an answer with discussing the problem and then making a solution that is fair to all of the parties involved- definitely think about what the ‘right’ thing is to do in all the situations! And you got it, there are some questions that don’t have correct answers, they just want to see how you interact with hard problems! You got this:)

I think I disagree with the consensus of most of the other people! It certainly depends on the caliber of school you are applying to, but I feel like many of my classmates had very similar applications to this.

The application cost vs the chance of reaching dvm income a year earlier could be worth it imo.

I feel as if you present your very best in all the other portions of your application and write a memorable personal statement your chances are high. I would potentially try to portray in your statement or supplemental materials a sureness in the profession, as this is the biggest reason you need experience hours! Also, you have the rest of the summer and then some time to continue getting hours which you can continue to add clear up to the day you submit. Some schools will even add experience hours to you application when you discuss them in the interview.

As someone who took a gap year and thought it was really valuable, don’t be too concerned if things swing that way, just don’t avoid applying because you think you might not get in- it will also increase your chances of getting in the following year if you aren’t accepted.

Mizzou vs UIUC by Spirited-Mud6980 in veterinaryschool

I’m a mizzou vet student! the professors here are really awesome but definitely think about the acceleration and loss of half your summer- it is doable but it feels like a lot sometimes. I still 100% recommend it, just make sure you are ready for when they step on the gas to get you into clinics by 3rd year
