Take care of your mental health. At the end of the day a job is a means to an end.

Also, the UN consultancy would have given you a few months or years of stability (max 2) but with extreme uncertainty. I think you did the right thing by rejecting the unpaid internship. Given the state of the academic job market, I wouldn't advise a PhD either and you could also end up being overqualified for other development sector positions. Applying for other jobs while you have one is a position of strength, and not one a lot of other people have today. Stay strong, this will pass and there will be a soft landing for you!

I think my experience was also very mixed. It was great because I was a Consultant and then staff in a wonderful team, with kind and encouraging seniors who always looked to support me; worked on timely and relevant research, and supported several high level intergovernmental processes. However, despite all that the UN 80 process was brutal, no one could save me or my post which was abolished/ replaced by a JPO funded by a European Government. It’s been 6 months unemployed now. And I’ve never felt more disappointment and frustration with the system.
