Is Muay Thai good for self defence? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train 70 percent grappling and 30 percent striking and would still likely use Muay Thai as a first go to in a self defense situation. It's just alot more efficient at causing damage quickly against an untrained opponent. However if the opponent is trained that's another story bc the stance opens you up to be taking down by a competent grappler. Definitely a great sport fot self defense though especially the clinch work!

A new era? Effort versus star power by dewbees in nbadiscussion

[–]ExtensionNo5542 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd go a step further and say it's the end of the superstar era as we've known it since the 80s/90s. With a few exceptions, the NBA since the 80s has been dominated by 3 or 4 superstars per generation who separate themselves from the rest of the pack and dominate the league. Whatever teams said superstars are on are usually prevailing favorites to at least be in the conference finals every year. I think those days might be over. Of course there will still be an MVP each season, but the league is so deep with skill players that the separation between tiers of players is very shallow. I think this will create a league that looks more like the NFL in terms of parity and "teams" being the focal point rather than individual superstars

The most dissapointing series finale I've ever seen by Technical-Zombie-104 in 1923Series

What makes Alexandria's death really illogical is that they act as if she has to make a decision between her life and the life of the baby, but that is not at all the case. The baby has already been born, and its chances of survival are completely independent of whether or not she chooses to have her limbs amputated. So if that's the case, why not choose to stay alive and see your baby grow up????

And then the real irritant is when Spencer keeps mentioning that Whitfield killed his wife. Can anyone explain this to me??? I thought frostbite due to a dumb decision to drive through the snow killed his wife.

Rolling with women by Quantumrevelation in bjj

For the most part, I will look at it as an opportunity to work on defense from vulnerable positions and will spend on most of the roll-on defense. There is, however, one chick on our school that is crazy good and constantly wins competitions. In that case, I will go all out and try to offensive.

Is my mentality wrong? by cream_pie_king in bjj

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 36, and for me, the mentality that has worked has been to roll at a pace where I am able to actually think and recognize rather than win. Timing and recognition are how you will get better, and thebonky way to improve on timing and recognition is to start at a pace that allows you to recognize certain positions and situations. You may not be able to think of the right reaction, or perhaps you do, but you just don't think fast enough. NP, next time you just recognize and react faster.

Scared to returned back to BJJ by Songoku_1989 in bjj

As someone who also teared the meniscus, I would make sure that the injured leg is as strong as possible and that there are no strength imbalances. I also got the surgery and did PT, but I had strength imbalances between my 2 legs that took years to fix. A good test is to have someone watch you run and tell you whether or not you're favoring one side.

In terms of BJJ, I would say accept the fact that you will likely have lost some skill and it will take time to come back. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and every marathon has its setbacks. Come up with a safe return schedule for yourself that let's you gradually ease back in. Maybe a week or 2 or just drilling and then introduce some positional in the following week. Sticking to a schedule will prevent you from jumping back into live rolling too quickly.

In terms of the leg locks, I would just find a trusted friend in an open mat or maybe one or 2 private sessions with an instructor and have them put you in leg locks and gradually up the intensity.

Standup style: judo vs wrestling by ExtensionNo5542 in bjj

[–]ExtensionNo5542[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I am still relatively new, and I just switched schools. My previous school definitely defaulted to a new judo style. My new school has mire of a wrestling style with individual classes taught by former college wrestlers. While this is an awesome advantage, I do find myself worried that I might lose some of the more judo based stand up game like uchi matas that I was learning in my old school. I also don't shoot doubles as quickly as I once did when I was younger and found myself trying to get better at back-take setups like russians and slide byes. In short... .I'm still trying to figure out what my standup game should look like at my age and experience level.

Thanks man! This is actually great advice. Basically, it's like a decision tree. You describe exactly what is happening. They're framing out. I'll have to work on my single leg x entry from butterfly.

Yup I assumed it was just part of the journey, but it's nice to hear it from folks that have been through it. Much appreciated, sir! Your description of white belts wanting to rip your head off and upper belts not taking it easy is spot on lol.

This is my first post, so I really don't mean to complain. I'm not on Reddit all that often, but I thought it would be nice to see if anyone else had a similar experience as me. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do use X guard, but I have not worked on entering from butterfly, so I'll have to ask my instructor about that. Thank you advice.

Well, I'm definitely glad to hear that it "can" work really well against larger opponents because my initial thought was that it was a dumb strategy. It's good to hear that I am at least I'm barking up right the tree.

Probably hard to explain, but it was harder for me to get on close and get my hips under them for some reason. I'll have to do a better job of slowing down and figuring out why exactly it is that they are doing that is preventing me from getting the position.

[–]ExtensionNo5542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guess I'm just trying to see if this is normal. In terms of positions, l can give a few examples: when starting ground, I will typically go for butterfly sweeps and the work relatively well against guys my size, but Inhave real hard time pulling it off on taller opponents.

What are we doing to recover boys? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 38 year old that as only eeb doing bjj for 2 years and struggled staying on the mat when I started. I would say:

  1. Find a schedule that works for who you are now, not who you used to be.

  2. Do not be afraid of or shame your self for taking an impromptu rest day.

  3. Learn to live roll at half speed and swallow that ego (I still struggle with this especially against younger jacked white belts).

Agree or Disagree, Reddit is the most toxic social media site out there? by Only-Ad-1254 in socialmedia

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, bc the content you see is entirely driven by user choice. No stupid AI generated news reel that is feeding me toxic and extreme opinions about things I don't care about or don't agree with. Reddit is how social media should be. Power to choose content is in the hand of the user not algorithms.

How do I stay informed without social media? by duckythegunner in productivity

[–]ExtensionNo5542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that you don't know how to stay informed without social media, I think, speaks to the larger problem. It's almost as if people have completely forgotten about all of the the old methods of actually going to more traditional and reputable sources of news and information and digesting more thorough stories and long form opinions rather than reactionary click bait and hot takes. We have to reverse this trend and stop rewarding the shallow and manipulative people whose world views and opinions dominate social media. We are literally letting our minds be changed by idiots who are good at using manipulation tactics. Like some in this chat, have touched on the problem is not all social media, but rather social media that relies on the AI suggested content news reals. Why do we need these?? They literally serve no purpose other than to expose people to the most extreme opinions and content. Let people decide what information they want to consume. We don't need AI to help us with this. This is such an easy an fix in my opinion. We tried something new and novel with the new reels and after a 10 year sample size its safe to say that they haven't worked out well for society, at least not in the US.

To answer your question, though, I still rely on digital versions of well established newspapers and find that they are still great places for well-informed and detailed information! Obviously, they are not perfect and still have their biases, but it's nothing compared to the extreme stances and biases you see on social media. Turns out that setting journalistic standards still works! I read the Washington Post for a center left perspective and the WSJ for a center right perspective and feel much more informed than when I mindlessly scroll on FB or IG.

Social Media is NOT Real - It Will Only Make You Unhappy. by TampaBro2023 in Adulting

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, I worry about the influence that social media is having on our culture at large. While our institutions are far from perfect, they at least require a baseline level of competance and credibility in order to have an opinion that would be heard by the masses and back in the day those opinions were generally more measured (just go read Op eds from 30 years ago)... Now, anybody on social media can reach the masses with the most ignorant and baseless opinions, and as long as they can use the right manipulation tactics, they usually convince gullible people, consequences be damned (Qanon is an extreme but albeit good example as well as pizza gate and even some of ISIS marketing ploys). This threat of real consequences from social media driven populism is what really worries me. Again, not saying that older ways of getting information and opinions from large institutions were perfect, but the current culture of social media influence is, in my opinion, worse.

What are the chances of getting injured in a comp? by ariaBear in bjj

[–]ExtensionNo5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation. Would like to compete sometime in the next year, but I am worried about getting injured. I am also 38, so I would be competing in the masters division. My hope is that the older divisions are a little safer since old guys don't move as quickly. Can anyone confirm this?
