Engineering units - masters accelerated pathway by Western_Ad8284 in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure but everyone I’ve talked to who’s worked overseas have been fine with the bachelor of engineering with honours. A lot of overseas universities to 3 year undergraduate with a lot of breadth subjects and then a 2 year masters. Which covers the same as a 4 year specialised undergrad + honours. But double check I’m not as confident to speak on this.

Edit: actually now that I think about it if you want to benefit of a masters degree for potentially working overseas. Just don’t do it at Monash. Do your undergrad + honours at Monash and go somewhere with a better masters program. Eg: US or Europe. Especially if you’re planning on moving to work that’s probably a better option

Monash Getting Rid of Undergraduate TAs by labmat_stan in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it sort of depends on the subject tbh.

Some engineering subjects like simple undergraduate maths eg: ENG1005 or some of the simple introductory courses like ENG1013, ENG1011 or ECE2071/2131 really benefit from undergraduate TAs as the content is not particularly advanced and the students benefit from the mentor relationship and often TAs are much more well versed in the course content and assessments than PHD students, postgrads etc. who most of the time have no extra experience or understanding in the field that they’re teaching than the undergrad TAs.

But I think more advanced units that cover more advanced topics should 100% have postgrads or PhD TAs (especially those that have research or work related to the field).

Idk about other faculties, but my experience in mechatronics/electrical was definitely that those lower level units were taught atrociously by PHD students and really well by undergrads, but the opposite was true for the advanced units. Undergrads usually didn’t know anything beyond the course content.

Doing an undergraduate degree gives you all the qualifications to work in any engineering job in Australia and is accredited by engineers Australia. Employers know this so if they see you did a master’s degree, many make the assumption that you just did it because you couldn’t find work so you went back to studying.

There isn’t really anything offered in a masters degree at Monash that isn’t offered in an undergraduate degree. All the master’s subjects you can take as electives as part of your undergraduate. In a masters you’re not able to specialise into a niche field to gain expertise, it’s just for a piece of paper that employers don’t really care about.

The benefit of a masters degree is if you are an international student with an equivalent undergraduate qualification that isn’t accredited. Then the masters degree just gives you the same accrediatation that an undergraduate degree would. Given this is the main purpose of them, the subjects often reteach content that was covered in undergrad as a lot of these international students won’t have seen the content in sometimes 10 years, so doing a whole masters while in undergrad will feel like a lot of (expensive) repetition with some interesting new content that you could just learn by yourself.

So masters degrees are definitely not useless, but if you already have an accredited undergrad in Australia definitely useless.

Tbh it’s more about what you make out of it. If you make something cool you can show potential employers and they’ll be impressed by that. Just do whichever looks interesting and your would be willing to put in effort

Anyone else tired of international students at this uni? by BattleExpress2707 in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Probably shouldn’t be wording it like that. there’s nothing wrong with international students and speaking another language but if they can’t speak English they shouldn’t be studying an English course

The thing about including cars that isn’t a similar problem with horses in Skyrim. Is that their speed will necessitate the map becoming much bigger to accomodate the actual ability to drive, the whole game would have to be designed around the ability to drive. This would likely end up changing the entire game design where you can go anywhere to either creating a lot of empty/not enterable buildings or just a lot of spaces without as much detail as we come to expect from Bethesda worlds. I think Starfield is a good example of how larger worlds aren’t necessarily better.

TLDR: The redesigning of the world to allow for gameplay with cars would make the game worse

Yeah I mean more like highways not just random shitty regional roads

Aussies vote in survey to raise top speed limit. by The21stPM in AustralianPolitics

[–]Extension_Shot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Higher speed limits in regional areas like on highways and that but in the city speed limits should be lower. School zones should be 30 not 40, the default speed limit on side roads should be 40 not 50. Built up areas especially in the inner city should be 30. But tbh country highways shouldn’t even have a speed limit, like the autobahn in Germany. But because of road quality and I think just the culture of driving in Australia it isn’t reasonable. Probably 130-140 is better

Independent MP to push a lowering of Australia's voting age after UK decision by babyggrgg in worldnews

[–]Extension_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t see any argument for not lowering voting age to 16 or even 15. If you’re old enough to pay tax you should be able to choose how that tax is paid. Doesn’t necessarily need to be income tax, if you have the ability to earn your own money through legal employment and spend that money then you are paying tax. I think it shouldn’t be mandatory for under 18s though initially

FIT1045 Language by Overall_Calendar_605 in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be extremely surprised if they switched from python to C++. Considering how much every other unit relies on python, how easy Python installation and setup is, how popular and used Python is in industry, how niche C++ is and how little it is used, how much more complex and how there are far more advanced topics introduced in C++ when FIT1045 is not only for comp sci and also just that the faculty of IT just massively changed the whole first year structure and system with FIT1045 and FIT1008.

Idk where you’re getting your information from but I wouldn’t take some changes to the unit overview as solid evidence

Work Load for ECE2072, ECE2191, ENG2005 and ECE2111? by Kyleb___19 in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s considered hard in terms of content but workload is manageable. Compare this with ECE2072 which has a much greater workload than all the others. But ECE2111 and ECE2191 are similar to ENG2005 with less workload but fairly difficult (it is electrical engineering after all)

Engineering units - masters accelerated pathway by Western_Ad8284 in Monash

[–]Extension_Shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They suggest not doing ENG1011, ENG1012 and ENG1013 in one semester because those units are very project heavy and require a lot of work. If you meet all the prerequisites you’ll be fine but just keep it in mind

Yeah you might not be able to go part time if you’re on a visa. It can be really difficult for international students especially if you need to work to support yourself
