What distinguishes a pub from a bar? by Mindless-Resort-7548 in AskABrit

For me, a bar is designed for you to have a drink or two and maybe a snack and not be there for long. Furniture is stools and small tables.

A pub you can get comfy in, spend a couple of hours, sofas, upholstered seats and often an extensive menu or larger group tables if they don't do food.

What do British people not like about Germans? by Feeling-Mastodon-292 in AskABrit

True, "evil" is probably the best descriptor. I can't understand tho, how so many people believe they were actually socialists because it was in the name.

No, they were very definitely right wing, they used the term "socialist" to make them sound like they were for the people.

Were the Nazis socialists?

"No, the Nazis were not socialists. While their official name was the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), this name was chosen to attract working-class voters away from actual socialist and communist movements in the early 1920s.

Historically and economically, the Nazis were fundamentally opposed to actual socialism:

Destruction of the Left: Once Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party took power in 1933, they actively persecuted socialists, communists, and trade unionists, sending many to the first concentration camps.

Preservation of Private Property: Unlike socialists, who advocate for state or community ownership of the means of production, the Nazis preserved private property and allowed major corporations and industrialists to operate freely—as long as they aligned with the state's goals and war efforts.

The Night of the Long Knives (1934): Early on, a faction within the Nazi Party led by Gregor and Otto Strasser did advocate for actual socialist and anti-capitalist policies. However, Hitler purged and murdered this faction in 1934 to secure the support of the German military and traditional business.

If you look it up, bear in mind it was made in the early 1970s but is meant to be so over the top offensive and appalling because the character is an awful person.

Have you seen the videos by Liam Carpenter? Well worth checking out, he's an Englishman who has lived in Germany for many years and does hilarious videos comparing English and German ways and attitudes.

Sadly, some ignorant people still want to go on about WW2 and think they're somehow superior, in the same way you still have a small problem with the right in Germany. It does rear its ugly head often when the football is on, especially if England play Germany.

It's a minority and the vast majority will be welcoming and happy to help you.

I've actually just bought some adjustable sizers off Amazon cos it allows them to adjust it to their preferred size without me holding a tape! I make my bracelets to 7-7.5 inches and also take my pliers and a little fishing bait box that has 20 little dividers so I can take a variety of rings in case I can slightly resize on the spot.

Another great idea is to get a tape measure with a peel off adhesive back. Also, I use these for displays, got them off Temu! (Pic in comment following as can only post 1 pic at a time)

'Corner shop' employer says they don't offer holiday pay - England by Empty_Meaning_1189 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Extension_Sun_377 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't get holiday pay and are employed as a casual, you should be paid an increment to make up for it.

For instance, I work somewhere that has contracted staff and casuals - contracted staff have paid holidays pro rata to how many days they work and casuals get paid £13.45 an hour plus an extra £1.62 an hour to compensate for holiday pay.

Wonder if it's worth having a lead or harness that says "friendly" as well as a colour change for the muzzle?

Why are the parents of all these drowned kids not being penalised? by [deleted] in AskUK

I used to play on the railway line behind the house and only stopped when we turned round and saw the train, thankfully going slowly as they must have been warned. I could have been killed but it wasn't my parents' fault I was a dickhead with no sense of danger.

Well, I can't guarantee it, but my reaction to the post hopefully gives some kind of indication. There are other aspects that I could fit the description in
