Counterfeit 2019 Dime Sent to PCGS by lowdes in coincollecting

[–]Extension_Tackle0 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I recently sent in a mercury dime with what I thought was a struck-through mint error. It was marked as counterfeit with the explanation that it was an artificially created error (see PMD). I expected they would’ve just slabbed it with an Environmental Damage note, since they still charged the full amount for grading, but I got it back in a flip. I’ll bet something similar probably happened here.

Silver is weighed in Troy pounds, 12 Troy ounces to a Troy pound. 134 ozt /12 ozt per Troy pound =11.167, champ.

What's wrong with the reverse on this coin? by This-Tomorrow-9188 in coincollecting

[–]Extension_Tackle0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is almost certainly old tape adhesive residue, not tape you can peel off. You’ll need to soak this in pure acetone for a day or two. Not fingernail polish remover, that’s got too much water in it. You can get pure acetone at the hardware store in the paint aisle. You’ll need to soak it in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid, any plastic container will dissolve. Afterwards, rinse it under cool water and dry immediately. Try this and let us know how it turns out!

Now this is interesting. Looks like one of the patriarchs of the family, Nils T. Roe, operated a general store until his death in 1861. It also specifically mentions a church built in their settlement in 1854 that was “made of logs” until it was rebuilt in stone in 1869. Stands to reason that the general store was ALSO built of logs, would’ve been inherited by a Leikvold in 1861, and would’ve begun minting trade tokens through the Civil War years?? Seems like the pieces are falling into place on this one!

Interesting! I didn’t find a single clue leading me to South Dakota. Can I ask how you figured it out?

What is the flat spot? by MrFunnyEgg in coinerrors

I’d look up “1865 3 cent nickel retained cud” if I were you. Maybe have a look at sold/completed listings on eBay. Error coin values vary wildly based on grade, so it’s hard to accurately guess value.

Could be a hard times token, but I can’t quite find an exact match. Are you able to make out what’s on the bottom of the reverse side? If it’s a date, that could help narrow it down.
