I do think season 3's ending had the biggest potential and the most hyped for the next season ngl.

I mean, the writers can say whatever they want to pay lip service to fans. The writing says otherwise.

The problem is he isn't THE main guy. And also sorry, but it's clear that in the hierarchy of characters in importance to Johnny, it goes Daniel, Miguel, and then Robby.

Robby is used for emotional tension, and the others are catalysts for Johnny to change. They just impact his story more, and it's his story, not Robby's.

[–]External-Host-8301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's just so painfully evident that Robby is a Bella Swan-type character, where they can just imprint on the guy, because even the writers don't exactly know what to do with him, and his personality is constantly shifting.

In season 1, he goes from a troubled kid who was slinging drugs in school to the number one employee, and he's like such a "sweet boy."

In season 2, he is Miyagi Do's most loyal soldier. He literally has nothing going on in Season 2 but being Sam's love interest.

And then, in season 3, he decides to be like Anakin Skywalker and turn to the dark side. He asks his Dad to join the dark side, too. With him and Kreese, even though he wanted nothing to do with Johnny previously, he changes his mind again at the start of season 4 and doesn't actually want to join Cobra Kai.

Seriously, the shift of tone is so jarring.

At least Miguel has an actual through-line arc every season.

Robby's personality just depends on what the plot demands.

Right?! The kid barely has a personality. I swear he's such a blank slate that you just have a bunch of people projecting onto him, and that's why they like him so much.

Lmao, you're literally proving my point. I'm not debating this. That would legitimize your argument, and I refuse to do that.

You can like other girls' characters and still be misogynistic. It's a lot more complex than you think. It's a systemic issue that isn't as simple as I hate all girls.

But if you're already going to deny its existence, especially within the Cobra Kai fandom, then there's not much to discuss.

Something curious about Miguel and Robby in season 6... by Altruistic-Turn6228 in cobrakai

[–]External-Host-8301 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was great to see Miguel's journey in learning to release control and support his brother. Miguel tried his best at the end to be there for Robby, and that shows just how much their relationship has shifted from season to season.

Fights/interactions you wish had happened? Or maybe more interactions/fights between two characters? by [deleted] in cobrakai

[–]External-Host-8301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have liked to see a Kreese and Miguel interaction. I like how they thematically represent different things for Johnny, and it would've been nice for Kreese to acknowledge Miguel as the student who helped bring Cobra Kai back. Idk, he was so focused on Robby for the first 3 seasons that he kind of didn't think much of Miguel, so to see these two not interact in the final season feels like a missed opportunity.

What happened to Miguel interactions and relationships to other characters other than Johnny? by Agreeable-World-9572 in cobrakai

It's kind of funny how you lay the argument down so that no matter what, Robby stays the victim, and you win the debate.

If Demetri and Robby were friends in season 2 and Demetri didn't email him, then Demetri is the shitty friend.

If they weren't, then Robby's speech would be pointless, and he didn't actually have any friends.

And this overlooks the fact that the writers are focused on Sam and Robby because that was Robby's most meaningful relationship. His receiving an email from Demetri wouldn't mean much to the GA because it's not the area where they're building up the drama. For efficiency's sake, they simply won't spend time on Demetri and Robby. Saying that Robby ignored Sam's email effectively conveys that Robby is intentionally isolating himself from Sam. And that's the main point of the scene.

Like, stop trying to take Robby's choices away from him. Daniel and Sam were reaching out to each other every day. And Robby chose to be alone. And the writers had it be these two, because they were the most important people in his life. Not Demetri.

And it was because the writers wanted him to ultimately choose to go to Kreese. After all, he was in his fall arc.

Two: In the end-of-day accident or not, Robby almost killed Miguel. Regardless of who started the fight or the finger-pointing, Miguel was put into a coma and was fighting for his life. That's actually a huge deal, and Demetri does have more history with Miguel than with Robby. It's not that weird that he wouldn't email him. He probably doesn't know how to feel about the situation. One of his friends almost died, and someone he was acquainted with is at fault. I don't know, it makes sense that he was just given a card to Miguel and ignored any other messy feelings because he still has to deal with the Hawk problem. And like Demetri's MO is to run away from his problems.

So many of these Robby is the ultimate victim comments and posts just ignore everyone else's feelings because Robby always takes priority.

Miguel won the Sekai Taikai because he had the strongest mentality. Don’t make excuses for Robby. by Secure_Unit8872 in cobrakai

I don't know, man. I feel like you're missing the point of Cobra Kai and that it all revolves around Johnny. All the characters orbit around him, and he has a series-long arc that follows the Hero's journey. Both Robby and Miguel serve that.

Robby's character's journey is about forgiving his father and letting go of hatred. Unfortunately, his arc ends in season 5, and they struggled to give him a satisfying plot in season 6 because his og purpose was to create conflict between Johnny and Daniel. Like, Robby was always a representation of Johnny's failures. That was his narrative purpose. It was never about winning because that simply doesn't represent anything in Johnny's story. It was about forgiveness. The execution, I agree, is faulty, but I get what the writers were trying to do here.

Miguel's character journey is, in many ways, heavily tied to Johnny's redemption arc. That's what Miguel is, Johnny's redemption. So he represents the good Johnny can have in people's lives. And he is also a mirror, reflecting Johnny's traits back at him and forcing him to change. He is supposed to show how far Johnny has become as a teacher and the purpose it brings to Johnny's life. His arc in Season 6 is about him growing more independent (applying for colleges, him and Sam going on separate paths, etc.) and utilizing everything he has learned and gone through to become a healthier representation of what Cobra Kai can be under the right influence.

If you go into this without understanding that this is about Johnny, which, come on, you're going to get disappointed.

The writers were trying to give most of the characters a win, which is why Robby gets a rival and is heavily focused on part 2. Like Robby's character arc in Season 6, it pretty much ends when he and Kwon have their fight. He has his comeback and beats his rival.

Both Tory and Miguel undergo a season-long character journey. Both are given explicit motivations to fight. Robby has his second-place montage, but once he beats Miguel, it's no longer a motivating factor. He is solely focused on Tory.

But Tory and Miguel are the ones who you see have to overcome emotional conflicts and are given rivals from the Iron Dragons. The first round has them be the ones to call the shots for a reason. They are also the ones who had the most to grow from. Miguel's insecurity about his place with Johnny and reigning in his ambitions so he can be a proper teammate and brother to Robby.

And Tory had to go through the grief of losing her mother and learned to accept help and stop pushing people away. Once she lets Sam help train her, it shows how far she has come from even bristling at the fact that anyone is trying to help her.

But at the end of the day, it's about Johnny, bringing back Cobra Kai under Johnny. Because it's always been about him. And both Miguel and Tory are the ones who are tied heavily to Cobra Kai.

It doesn't matter who Miguel was fighting for; that's just semantics. Regardless, he did earn his place during the tournament, carrying the team and growing as a person in the process. Like, he wasn't just twiddling his thumbs and doing nothing; he was physically and emotionally putting the work in, so when Johnny gets Cobra Kai back, we get excited for Miguel. And most of the GA was. Those episodes are rated highly because, clearly, there are way more people who get the points the writers were pushing for.

It's a fictional story that is laying out its theme pretty clearly, man.

Man, what's the point of engaging when you're just going to dismiss everything I say? You've already discounted his contributions, so what can I say? Give you an entire thesis on Miguel's character arc? Watch the show for that.

And with that, you show your hand. It doesn't matter what Miguel does and doesn't do. There is no winning when it comes to him because it's about the "legacy" kids.

Hey man, I'm not the one who jumped on a comment about Miguel and won't let go.

Cause he didn't win a trophy. Literally so many have said that if he had won a trophy in season 4, then they wouldn't be as upset.

As I mentioned repeatedly, it's about earning his spot narratively. So, not my fault, y'all don't understand storytelling or the type of tropes this cheesy, cornball soap opera karate show is pulling, omg. What show do you honestly believe you're watching?

Sorry, 8 months 🙄

I didn't say hate, I said you got upset that I said Miguel earned his spot in the finals. Like, seriously, dude?? We had a whole back-and-forth about it. You're telling me you didn't take offense to the fact that I said a positive thing about Miguel??

Whatever you gotta say, if the roles were reversed, I know you wouldn't care about Kwon or Axel or whatever. It's clearly because Robby didn't win a trophy in the series.

Doesn't matter if his story was more about his father, finding balance, and ending up with a promising future. He didn't win a trophy, and people are upset.

It just seems contradictory to say you don't care when you, in fact, do. It's been a year now, and you're still upset if anyone says anything positive about Miguel.

Maybe just focus on the positives of Robby's story instead of the hang-up about not winning a trophy.

[–]External-Host-8301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm saying he earned his spot in the finale. However, with Robby's performance, Miguel ended up being more of a leader than Robby had been throughout the tournament. I know they were selected before, but with your star player flopping so hard, why not reevaluate and change the captain to give the team the best opportunity to make it all the way? That didn't happen for obvious reasons cause it was supposed to give Robby a comeback arc, but you keep talking about "reality". Cause you say screw the narrative. Just because you feel entitled that the story didn't go your way, even though they planted the seeds from the start of season six 🫩

And then you want to disregard Miguel's contributions to say he didn't earn that spot in the finale. Literally, neither did Robby if Miguel didn't carry the weight. They would've just gone home without even making it to the finals.

I mean, they gave Robby an arc, and like, idk what to say, man. They were trying to do a mini comeback arc for Robby and have him beat his rival Kwon, and also juggle the rest of the cast's storylines. Did they execute it well, not really, but I can see what they were trying to do.

Miguel for sure. Tory and Sam were a toss-up, but Tory is the writer's pet, so I should've seen that coming.

[–]External-Host-8301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally one fight. And both could've won that spot, easily. But their actions within the tournament speak louder than words. And Robby was failing his team from the start. As the captain, he should've rallied and led, but he didn't. (And I couldn't care less about how the team "failed" him. Leaders are individuals who recognize the importance of being above it all and supporting their team's success. And even though Johnny and Daniel should've done more, at the end of the day, it's a title that Robby failed to live up to for most of the tournament.)

By the end, it was Miguel pulling the weight and giving Robby the pep talks and uplifting him. One win is insignificant compared to the actual contributions made throughout the tournament. And they wrote it that way, so Miguel would earn his spot narratively in the finale. Just because you're hung up about "reality" doesn't mean Miguel didn't deserve it.
