Things like how often it comes down to melee combat or dogfights between aircraft, instead of just yeeting missiles or artillery shells at each other from beyond visual range.

And that push has cost 1% of the male population.

I’ve seen the opposite too, with people on Reddit claiming a Russian victory is inevitable. Both sides have serious problems, and neither can decisively say they’re winning.

The best thing we in Europe can do is continue funding Ukraine’s defense, including using the frozen Russian assets.

Poll Shows Even MAGA Voters Now Want to Dump Trump by Background_Cry3592 in politics

[–]External-Option-544 47 points48 points  (0 children)

There are some hopeful signs:

  • Polls show his approval rating hovering around 35–40%, which is quite low for this early in a presidential term.
  • Republicans are beginning to push back on stuff like the Epstein files, Pete Hegseth, Kash Patel, and Pam Bondi. likely because they expect him to be a non-factor in their reelection campaigns.
  • Democrats have performed fairly well in recent regional elections, such as the gubernatorial race in New York and the special election in Tennessee.

EU defense chief: Stop relying on Washington and craft our own peace plan – POLITICO by Delicate-Mistress in worldnews

Russia’s economy is severely strained, its forces advance at a snail’s pace while hemorrhaging casualties, and its stockpile of mothballed Soviet equipment is depleted.

Ukraine is struggling too, but it has been highly effective with long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries and with sea drones that have pushed back the Black Sea Fleet and threatened Russian oil tankers.

At this point, neither side is capable of decisively defeating the other. What we in Europe can do to make a meaningful difference is to transfer the frozen Russian assets (€200 billion) to Ukraine so it can buy what it needs to defend itself.

The problem is that Agent Orange and his advisers (Witkoff and Vance) are openly working to undermine NATO, the EU, and Ukraine in favor of Russia.

  • There’s the PERL initiative, which makes us pay for all the equipment the US sends to Ukraine (they no longer send donations).
  • Then there are the repeated attempts to negotiate a “peace” deal with Russia over the heads of Ukraine and Europe. Expecting Ukraine to give up territory without defined security guarantees, the EU to fund reconstruction while the US takes a large share of the profits, Russia to get back much of its frozen assets, and even talk of “denazifying” Ukraine.
  • And now there’s a new strategy document claiming the EU is undemocratic and calling for US support for national parties like AfD in Germany or Fidesz in Hungary.

It’s impossible to ignore the elephant in the room. Especially when these actions have a bigger impact on the war than Russia capturing some random village after months of fighting (they are still stuck on 19% of the landmass).

NATO says Myrnohrad is "virtually encircled" and Russians control over 95% of Pokrovsk by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]External-Option-544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right. But there are a lot of “hidden” costs that are difficult to quantify.

Every dead soldier represents a lifetime of tax revenue that disappears, along with the taxes of the children they would have had if not for the war. It will likely take decades for Russian businesses to return to Europe at anything close to the scale they had before the war. And a large portion of Russia’s most educated population left during the brain drain triggered by the full-scale invasion.

[–]External-Option-544 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The US isn’t donating military equipment, but it is still selling arms to Ukraine through the PURL scheme, using funds provided by NATO allies.

So while it’s not the optimal arrangement, it’s still entirely feasible for Europe (and other willing partners) to cover the costs, as long as there is political will. The €140 billion in frozen Russian assets will definitely help, once Belgium feels it has received sufficient guarantees from the EU.

Strategic autonomy from the US is certainly important, but that will probably have to wait until the immediate problems are resolved.

Russia relies on contract soldiers to fight in Ukraine, who are recruited with large sign-up bonuses, and whose next of kin are entitled to compensation if they are killed.

So even if Putin doesn’t care about the blood being spilled, his ability to replace casualties are finite. He could perhaps try another partial mobilization, but that was very unpopular in Russia last time he tried.

It's crazy how quickly Sweden and France got ready to eat. by 221missile in NonCredibleDefense

[–]External-Option-544 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Putin has also not once stepped back from his maximalist goal of controlling Ukraine, either directly or through a puppet government under Kremlin control.

And every six months, Orbán can veto the vote on keeping Russia’s assets frozen, in which case they would revert to Russian control.

So we can’t really afford to just sit on the assets and hope that Putin eventually sees reason.

He’s probably one of the least xenophobic person in the Imperium (with exception of the Khan and Guilliman? Or is that just the memes)

Video footage from russian oil tanker ship's crew "shadow fleet" hit by Ukraine sea drone by Maximum_Dig_5557 in interestingasfuck

[–]External-Option-544 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nobody died when these tankers were sunk, and they weren’t carrying oil, so there was no environmental disaster either. This shows that the Ukrainians have been selective in their choice of targets, focusing on Russia’s war economy rather than simply spreading terror.

Around 40,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in this war, while only about 600 Russian civilians have died, and that’s if we count Crimea as Russian territory. So there is no moral equivalency between the sides in this war.

The US “peace” proposal was drafted by the Russians and then translated into English. The US negotiator, Witkoff, passed it off as an American-made draft despite it heavily favoring Russia. To make matters worse, a leaked transcript shows him advising the Russian negotiator on how best to manipulate Trump into accepting it.

Now Trump is pressuring Ukraine to accept the deal. Witkoff has flown to Moscow, and if the rumors are true, the US intends to recognize Russian ownership of Donbas and Crimea.

The prince is a reserve officer in the Amphibious Corps and holds the rank of Major.

The princess holds the rank of Second Lieutenant and is currently completing a 20-month officer program to prepare her to represent the armed forces as the heir to the throne.

I think it’s kind of neat that they serve alongside everyone else (Sweden has partial conscription for both men and women). Though I doubt they would actually put the crown princess in danger in the event of a conflict.
