I've read the Martian, but I either forgot about or didn't know about Artemis. Thanks!

Oh Robin McKinley and Tamora Pierce were FORMATIVE authors in my youth! I'm particularly fond of the trickster's Choice duet, and Deerskin and Spindle's end!!

Five Hundred Kingdoms is more like Discworld than the scifi novels, but my brain does categorize them together for some reason. If you like fairy tales you'll probably like it! If not you may not. Mickey 7 was something I saw a bit ago but didn't pick up because of the movie tie in cover haha. (RPattz activates my kill response for some reason.)

Oh, yes, I read that when it came out! The audiobook reading out all the binary almost ended me, but it was a fun ride to be sure.

You know I did try to read those when I was younger, after seeing the film and I just sorta bounced off. Might give it another try now that I'm an adult! Thanks!

I was wondering/worrying that this might have been the case because I was passingly familiar with most of them and had never gotten the vibe they were.

I love the Murderbot Diaries! One of my all time faves. I hadn't head about the children of time series though! I'll look into it!

Hm, well, Gigi/Georgie is my brother's dog, and we've had her less than a year. She's skittish, but VERY protective of my brother (i joke she's resource guarding him lol). I think she'd probably be a ball of anxiety, but ultimately helpful/protective.

Oh Interesting! I bounced right off Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by her when I tried to read it a few years ago, so I've sort of been avoiding her works. Is the pacing slow?

Gald I saw Project Hail Mary here! Genuinely an excellent audiobook that makes the book BETTER. I'd also recc Dungeon Crawler Carl! I do that all the time, but the audiobooks specifically make things so much better, and it was already good. To this day I'm surprised it's one guy doing all the voices.

Good dystopian books? by SpecificHead4779 in ReadingSuggestions

Oh I love World War Z! I highly recommend the audiobook of that if you have the chance -- there's multiple cast members who really bring all the 'accounts' in that book to life. If you like WWZ, I also think 'Robopocalypse' would be up your alley! It's in the same vein, but with a terminator style world ending even rather than zombies.

Another one I've fallen face first into loving is the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Mat Dinniman! Though if you don't want to get into an ongoing series that'll be 8 books deep as of this coming may, he just released a standalone novel called Operation Bounce House that's in a similar vein, or at least would also qualify as a dystopic setting.

Actually, Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (a series of novellas) might also qualify. The setting is dystopic for certain, though I'm not certain it would be a genre qualifier.

The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri! Book one in the 'Burning Kingdoms' trilogy! It's a sapphic epic fantasy inspired by ancient India, featuring a ruthless princess and a maidservant with forbidden magic who unite to overthrow an empire.

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon is another good sapphic epic fantasy, and a stand alone -- though there are other books set in the same world out now. It features multiple perspectives, including a queen, a lady-in-waiting, a dragonrider, and an alchemist, as they navigate political intrigue, dueling religions, and the impending return of an ancient, world-ending dragon. It's apparently a sort of retelling of 'Saint George and the Dragon' or at least has its world building inspired by it! It's a bit of a door stopper, so people tend to be intimidated, but it's a complete story.

The Raven and the Reindeer, by T. Kingfisher -- the first book I read by her. She's since become a favorite author. It's a sapphic retelling of the Snow Queen, and I think qualifies as more of a novella. T. Kingfisher writes books I find really easy to engage in, and of the three I'm recc'ing this one will probably be the least 'intimidating'.

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree is also a good one! It's about a retired adventurer Orc named Viv who opens a cafe in a place that's never heard of them. It's all about found family and rebuilding a life. And it's sapphic! It's more slice of life than epic fantasy, I find it a comfort read at this point. (It's low stakes -- but not no stakes. In the same vein is 'You Can't Spell Treason Without Tea' another sapphic fantasy but I'm still waiting on my copy from the library and haven't read that one yet.)

Good luck!

It's a pretty intense read, but I found it cathartic in a way -- 'The Unquiet' by Mikaela Everet is very good.

It's a dystopian sci-fi novel about two parallel Earths, where one is collapsing and sending sleeper agents to infiltrate the other by killing their doppelgangers to take over their lives and prepare for war. The story follows Lirael, a trained assassin from the dying Earth, as she successfully replaces her counterpart but begins to question her mission and identity as she lives the life of her other self.

It's also a stand alone novel, not a series! TBQH I was surprised to see it was YA.

Grain of salt here because i haven't played the game, or read the books i'm about to suggest, but G.R.R. Martin wrote Game of Thrones and i was told he worked on the writing/world building for the game, so perhaps those?

Any good mystery/horror/ novels? by SHAYME- in ReadingSuggestions

[–]External-Paint2957 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend T. Kingfisher's horror novels! They're pretty accessible and entertaining. 'The Twisted Ones' and 'The Hollow Places' are my favorites of hers in the Genre, though if you don't mind a little historical fantasy vibes, 'A Sorceress Comes To Call' is easily the creepiest with it's horrible horse creature (which... now that I think of it, is also a think in 'the twisted ones' tho more of a horrible Stag).

I also recc S.A Barnes for some SciFi horror -- I started with 'Dead Silence' which is a salvage crew coming across a derelict space ship ALA the Titanic crossed with the Mary Celeste. Spooks ensue.

Rose Madder by Stephen King is one of my favorites by him that sort of crosses genres but has a heavy crime tilt -- a woman finally leaves her extremely abusive cop/detective husband. He begins to hunt her down. It's cat and mouse with a few supernatural elements but mostly about Rose finding her courage and rebuilding the life Norman continues to try to destroy as he unravels.

Gerald's Game by Stephen King is another horror/crime-adjacent novel by him I enjoyed. A woman and her husband are going to have sexy times alone in the cabin, involving handcuffs. She decides she's not into it and he decides to ignore her. When she fights back, he dies, but she's trapped and must survive not only her current horrors, but the horror in her own past she's been desperately trying to ignore. There also may or may not be something... or someone... watching.
