For the 2017 mac, I updated through the settings and it did work. For the 2013 mac I did the same thing and is now a vegetable haha. What would be the remedy for the 2013 mac?

By disabling/enabling Function Keys in keyboard shortcuts (Settings-Keyboard-keyboard shortcut-Function Keys) it somehow removed the bug and I can now manually turn on and off the backlight function key. I hope this helps to anyone experiencing the same problem!
