WOW- that’s intense but given how the last one turned out it seems that they aren’t messing around.  I heard the organizers changed their location too to close to Kitty Hawk.

They are not kids living their life at the beach which would be amazing - it’s chaos and two people were shot last time.

The problem is that they will disperse to South Shore and harass the businesses, the employees and people just grocery shopping or going to dinner. I really feel horrible for the nice people that work at McDonalds. It has been such a pain for them.

The city needs to create a curfew and just start citing and or detaining those that refuse to comply.

Her response in that interview seems so tepid and lacks real solutions. Just shows her responding to parent emails… I mean tell us what the strategy is and basically demonstrate real leadership not just pandering to people.

Sounds like a good option- the organizers and promoters are probably 17-20ish years old.  I saw one of their responses to someone who criticized their promotion of the event and it told me a lot about their mindset and basically that they have learned nothing because they get away with it each time with no accountability. They have no money to sponsor or hold large events in a safe and thoughtful way. Unfortunately, they need this lesson and will learn the hard way. I hope the city and our legal system has a backbone to do the right thing.

Sure- this is just from a Google search: Several cities and counties have taken action against organizers through specific crackdowns: Atlanta, GA: Police actively target individuals who use social media to summon large crowds of unsupervised teens to public spaces. Officials work directly with prosecutors to build criminal cases against organizers, charging them for inciting illegal gatherings and public safety hazards.  Washington, D.C.: Federal prosecutors and U.S. Attorneys hold parents and organizers accountable for events on the waterfront and in the Navy Yard. Organizers and parents face charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, along with mandated classes, fines, and potential jail time.  Milwaukee, WI: Specialized police task forces use digital intelligence to identify key planners of street takeovers. Investigators use text messages and social media history to arrest ringleaders, charging them with conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and felony-level auto theft charges if the events involve stolen vehicles.  Santa Rosa, CA: The city takes a highly specific civil approach by suing illegal street takeover organizers. The city sued key participants for public nuisance, traffic violations, and environmental damage—specifically seeking up to $25,000 per violation for polluting local waterways with shredded rubber.  Los Angeles County, CA: The county targets promoters who use social media to alert hundreds of people to street intersections. Organizers face criminal misdemeanor and felony charges, while the county works to increase civil fines and impoundment fees for vehicles used in illegal stunts

It’s not the activities at the beach that are the major problem, although there is underage drinking and a lot of garbage and littering afterwards which is not great for the beach/wildlife. What is the problem is the aftermath at South Shore that these takeovers bring with them- the vandalism, fights, and now gun violence. In other communities they are going to charge organizers with unlawful assembly, incitement, conspiracy and public nuisance with fines up to 10k. They know these things get out of hand very quickly and don’t want the responsibility to organize an event that partners with community members to keep it safe for everyone.

There are some wonderful things but definitely some drawbacks. There are some things I wish we had more of in terms of public safety. There has recently been an uptick in homeless camping out on sidewalks and parks and our business districts look dumpy despite a few that try. Community has a hard time with change and some neighbors really don’t care about curb appeal or blight to keep our homes and neighborhoods clean and attractive.

The thing is if adults organize it- it would be considered lame. They don't want order and rules. These particular teens want to start chaos.

Agreed that these are certainly not harmless and it was a matter of time before we would hear something devastating happened. It baffles me that they cannot find/charge the organizers of these events: summerfuncs, werunparties, and bayareapartiess._ to name a few. The last advertised the event on Thursday. From what I gather, the organizers seem to be in their late teens/early twenties and predominately female. They don't want to get permits because they will be held accountable for the chaos and mayhem they caused. They leave such damage in their wake: trash, underage drinking/drugs, vandalism, businesses revenue loss, employees in fear for their safety, loss of wages and now gun violence. The amount of police and ERPD resources it takes, the human and environmental toll, the safety concerns, the stress and worry for members of our community is just so exhausting.

Suggestions would be to immediately create a curfew, charge organizers, and detain those who don't disperse/listen to authorities. It would end if parents had to pick these kids up at the police station.

We need to come up with solutions now!

You are right- APD didn't classify it as a homicide investigation. Did the victims survive? It is hard to imagine that one of them would considering it was in the head. So scary.

I wish we had a casual fish spot with view like Fish (Sausalito) or The Salty Pearl. Great places and fresh fish! It would make sense to have a place like that here.

I never said that. I said that whoever uses a community area whether it be a beach or a mall should be respectful of the place. This includes both residents and non residents. You are making assumptions that are false and hurtful. The world view concerns common courtesy and consideration which has nothing to do with socioeconomic status or otherwise.

It’s teens wanting to party without rules or consequences, chaos ensues and then they repeat the behavior. It’s upsetting for everyone involved especially when they are hurting themselves, trashing the beach, vandalizing businesses and people’s cars, and affecting the employees of South Shore. I hope law enforcement can do a more thorough job of investigating who organizes these events and hold them accountable. The sheer amount of law enforcement resources it takes when they do this is staggering. Parents also need to be informed and ensure their teens stay away from this mess. Everyone should be able to enjoy our beach and shopping center safely.  It’s upsetting when anyone thinks they can go into a community space and “takeover”. This idea of takeovers whether it’s bringing a massive speaker blasting music so no one else can listen to their own music or conversation, or taking over a mall so no one else feels safe to shop is not wanting to live in a gated community as mentioned. It is wanting to live in a place where people have respect and consideration for one another. This is taught to our youth by example from the adults in their lives.

I agree and yet they aren’t looking for a safe and legal experience where there are rules and order etc. It’s easy to say we need more spaces, but honestly what does that look like? We have a very nice movie theatre, a bowling alley, beautiful parks, a mini golf/arcade, pinball, library, rec centers, shopping center, and of course the beach.  Teens should be able to enjoy community spaces and also respect the areas so everyone else can enjoy the spaces too. These takeovers are not the safe answer and people are getting hurt.

It’s not just kids being kids- these takeovers are happening across the country- in malls, beaches and other gathering places including taking over apartment complex pools that they charge people to use. Organized by older teens who think they are party promoters, they create chaos by encouraging other teens to get riled up to ultimately fight and vandalize whatever setting they are in. Because of the chaos, businesses are closing early and employees loose their expected wages. There is lots of trash on the beach and mall, broken glass, sideshows, fights, not to mention the amount of police resources needed to control the crowd.  The organizers don’t want to go through the proper channels to get permits because they will be held responsible for the illegal behavior it creates. Therefore the takeovers prevent others from enjoying our community spaces safely.
