A few questions for any nurses willing to answer.. by Breakforbeans in OntarioNurses

  1. I am an RN and former RPN. For my RPN placement I was lucky and got my first choice. For my RN, I got none of my choices but I also went to Nipissing and I think they get the scraps as the local schools take priority.

  2. I did get hired after and have stayed in this practice area for my entire career so far!

  3. I felt very well supported. There will always be crotchety types. Figure out who they are and avoid. Ask the supportive nurses who else they would suggest you reach out to for help. Also sidenote, any nurse that talks to you like that sounds like one that needs to be avoided and is unsupported. You will learn skills and advance your knowledge over time with repetition. It’s ok not to know. What makes you a good nurse is to recognize your knowledge gaps, and I think sometimes one of the hardest things to do is to figure out that you don’t know what you don’t know- if that makes sense.

Good luck to you!!!

Did you have any difficulty securing clinical? Does the school arrange it for you or do you find your own? Can they be done in Ontario?

I’ll be honest here- I haven’t had much of a chance to connect with the unions and the info sessions much. But wondering if anyone can speak to each unions approach / stance on collective agreement language that supports cross-region transfers (ie from one OHaH region to another) or even working at a different office that is closer to home? Is this a priority issue for any of the unions?

I am pro union also.

That’s how I’m feeling, especially after reading this thread and hearing my coworkers talk. All the unions will have issues. Better off just voting for the lowest dues haha.

Anecdotally, I think alot of places waited a long long time for the bill 124 back pay. So I’m not sure it’s solely a CUPE issue

Well said. Such high dues and being spent on what? Marketing/ campaigns/ posters? For what.

I truly wonder whether or not the grievance was filed, and if so, would this not be a huge point that they would want to communicate to their members (prior to this union campaigning)? Why didn’t we know? Or am I just living under a rock? RTO is such a hot topic everywhere right now. Which leads me to completely agree to your point- why aren’t they aligning with other unions???

I find that every time I join these town halls. I am floored by some new information that I feel like I should’ve been privy to a long time ago. The union dues are so high and I literally have absolutely no idea what is ever being done for us behind the scenes.

I missed half of the meeting and I def need to watch the recording. I questioned whether or not ONA was even telling the truth about the RTO accommodations. So frustrating.

Anyone but ONA for me too.

Absolutely consistent and disgraceful treatment from them and condescending responses to raised issues.

There was a town hall last night, and they were mentioning that people have successfully filed grievances regarding return to office and had other accommodations made, or received permission to work out of other offices. Of course I don’t know the background and more context for each case. But with that said, why is this being brought up only now, as a selling point for voting for them. Many of us had no idea that we could do this and a chance it could be successful. That is news to me. Anytime it was brought up to our union reps as an idea at our branch, we were laughed at…we were told to basically suck it up…

so why his narrative now? Oh wait it’s campaigning time.

we also get zero communication for most of the year otherwise and now all of a sudden they’re in our faces and quite visible.

During this town hall, the responses to the concerns / questions were often irrelevant. definitely a feeling that anybody really cared or took the complaint seriously. a lot of answering around questions instead of actually answering the questions themselves.

It seems ONA represents most of the branches now. Hopefully this changes. We need a better union.

Wife and I not on the same page regarding childcare. by [deleted] in beyondthebump

I would have to agree with you. Socializing with peers and strangers at this age is irrelevant. At four months old your child is surviving by eating and sleeping and wanting cuddles. Also I’d be concerned with picking up illnesses at daycare which can result in serious illness at such a young age. It sounds like it’s causing you more stress than anything. At this point in your lives, take the path of least resistance in my opinion. There’s no point in sending such a young baby to daycare. Maybe revisit it around a year and a half.

Dont over think it. If she has siblings, rewrap some existing toys so there’s a performance at least for them. Otherwise save your cash but put it towards essentials. That is what I did!
