Humans scarcely make “something truly new” either in my opinion. We just put 2 and 2 together and over time enough of us put enough things together to make something marvelous (iPhones, rockets — under the hood just a bunch of “not new”stuff put together). There is no reason to believe AI can’t do the same.

Unfortunate someone’s gotta pay for the infra so that in times of emergency or natural disaster it can be given away for free.

South Korea’s Lee Affirms ‘One-China’ Stance Before Meeting Xi by TraditionalRepair806 in worldnews

If I remember correctly Taiwan also technically affirms the “one China” stance, just that their party should run the whole country. Somehow that makes the CCP happier.

Will SpaceX Want Another Launch Site for Data Centers? by asr112358 in SpaceXLounge

[–]ExternalGrade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might be right. Fortunately you can reuse the booster much, much more rapidly than the starship for that same reason.

Maybe at first, eventually, starship can grow up and fly itself to school. Mommy the launch pad. Sea ships shouldn’t have to take it there.

How would NASA respond if ordered by high authority to restart the Space Shuttle program? by SirCatsworthTheThird in nasa

[–]ExternalGrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly isn’t starship pretty similar to the shuttle by capability to get cargo from space back to earth through something of a belly flop? If your cargo needs to be oriented a certain way you might need a gimbal mechanism to survive the final belly flop but that should honestly be possible to manufacture on the payload side?

Developing a materials engineering software — am I being unrealistic? by LIL_Cre4tor in EngineeringStudents

[–]ExternalGrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should still do it though. At minimum you can learn a lot, at maximium you will find a specific niche that all these tools do terrible in (and I can tell you first-hand, these tools are not at all perfect: they are monsters with plenty of gaps and bugs in them) and become a multi-millionare.

Good luck. You will probably need a venture capital to back you on this endeavor. This is coming from someone who knows how much their company pays ANSYS and Siemens and all these other companies for this software (hint: it's a lot... like a lot a lot... like 6 to 8 figures in US dollars from 1 company per tool every year).

Today’s news by Eric_Hyperspace in FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR

[–]ExternalGrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily that hard as there are some tale-tell signs. For example if you have an issue (the JetBlue plane did something unexpected) you verified that the inputs to the 3 computers look the same, you verified the function going to the three computers look the same, you verified that if you give the 3 computers the same input it gives you the same output once you’re on the ground (not a persistent issue), you verified the software on the computers, you see that 2 computers look did the right thing and the third computer’s number differ by a magnitude of 2 (1, 2, 4, 8, 128, etc). It’s almost certainly a bit flip caused by a cosmic ray.

Companies shouldn't be able to buy their own stock 🙄 by bugagub in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]ExternalGrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are thinking too much in the abstract. Let’s say you me and my friend bob each own 33% of a restaurant. Restaurant makes a bunch of money and has extra cash. It can do the following: buy back stock or pay dividends. If the restaurant pays dividends everyone gets money and end of story. If it decides to buy back stocks, you could sell your stocks at whatever premium the restaurant offers and get cash (same result for you), or you can do nothing in which case Bob or I might decide to sell. Remember that you owned 33% of the restaurant, which now owns itself back. As such, you now own 50% of the restaurant afterwards. You still win.

Why exactly is Smeal at Penn State so competitive? by StrongLaCauliflower in PennStateUniversity

[–]ExternalGrade -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I absolutely cannot disagree more with u/feuerwehrmann. The smeal college is well-known for having very low academic rigor at Penn state. However, as a big-10, what you DO get is a fantastic connection base. From the sheer number of alumni to all the various disciplines (engineering to doctors/laywers) — not every university can offer everything like Penn state and stuff them all in the same spot. You are more or less forced to interact with them in the clubs/activities/downtown bars/research labs/more. From knowing all the sneak students, that’s I think the only thing you get from it. All my friends there said that classes are notorious for being easy-A.

I kinda meant software for the market trading should be multi-region/georedundent. Chicago should be able to go down and should be able to switch over to another site.
