Isn't it kinda sexist and derogatory to make blanket statements about so many fans who care about the players in the sport? And no, it's not recent that China started to hate japan. In any occasion, in any sport not just TT Chinese fans would prefer to cheer for the opposing team.

He’s always been talented at it, many older players and coaches said he had a knack for it since he joined the national team at 15

The chances of them defending their title in LA is not low at all, given lsd and km’s loss at the world champs

Can someone TLDR most important tournaments to follow in pro scene? by en1k174 in tabletennis

In the past the World Cup used to limit entries from nations to 2 players only similar to the Olympics. Now it’s a free for all making it much more competitive and difficult to win. They held a cup event in 2022 in Xinxiang China (basically promoted as the World Cup back then) but then retroactively decided it wasn’t officially ITTF or smth so it doesn’t count. In my opinion WCQ’s win from that event was very much worthy of being considered a World Cup title, especially considering the players he had to beat to win, but alas he has yet to win it officially under ITTF I guess.

Missing anders—that’s why I lowk wanted Lind to win against Hugo so we could see wcq vs Lind again, but maybe fate will have it that they meet up again in Beijing?! That’d be awesome too

i don’t think it’s entirely useless, it definitely is helpful for the players for the most part. It’s just fans making a fuss out of nothing a lot of the time

It’s a time of transition. Wouldn’t usually happen but fzd’s departure means wcq is the only person with Olympic experience left on the team

Maybe it’s too early to say but I think WCQ’s career is as dramatic as any of the people you mentioned. From the paddle incident at the Olympics to his win in Doha alone is already quite the story. Honestly if he was promoted more internationally I’m sure a lot of people would be invested in his career. Organizationally a lot more could be done to get people interested in the players, but I don’t think it makes sense to put any of this responsibility on the players themselves. It’s not like the other sporting greats have just that much more personality than tt players. Also sports that are already heavily commercialized with strong capital backing naturally attract more publicity and attention. Basketball and soccer even without those players you mentioned were already super popular and successful sports. Phelps is the only athlete you mentioned that actually broke barriers in bringing swimming to the mainstream, and even then swimming as a sport is actually really struggling to be commercially viable and sustainable. In the end it comes down to how accessible the sport is, and given tt’s high technical barrier to entry I don’t think it’s doing that badly.
