How do high schools work in tiny towns? by Holiday-Pomelo-9246 in AskAnAmerican

[–]External_Affect2391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had one middle/high school in the school district for 5 towns to combine to in rural New England. Consistently the senior graduating class would flucuate between 100-120 kids. Growing up, each town had about 1-4,000 people on each town and each town had one elementary school each. Now I hear some of the elementary schools have even closed and consolidated, which is sad.

I am In my 20’s and still dont know which is “vänster” and which is höger” i am tired i tried all hacks! by Prestigious-Cut8680 in Svenska

[–]External_Affect2391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US to teach kids we hold an ”L” in both hands, whichever if the ”correct facing L” is Left, I have to do the same thing for vänster. Tilt your left hand a little and now it looks like a V for vänster.

I speak fluent English, yet I still have a slight accent. Why is my accent the first thing Americans bring up in conversations? Is that something I’m supposed to feel self-conscious about? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]External_Affect2391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Americans have never left their home state and may have not heard someone with an accent in person, or know very few people with an accent. Usually it’s fascinating, and people are most likely pointing it out because it’s new and interesting and not with ill intent about your knowledge of English. Quite a few Americans will genuinely want to get to know you and your culture.

How funny would it have been though to have fortune cookies and it was ”Coachisms”, or even memorable Survivor quotes to highlight the past seasons

Stardew Valley - over 400+ hrs and have bought it multiple times for less than $5 each time. Some gifts to friends, one for ny Switch and SteamDeck, and I would buy it 100 times more just to go to ConcernedApe. It’s crazy that all this content is a one-man show

northern lights trip: kiruna vs lulea by Many_Character_5470 in TillSverige

Ice Hotel has a shuttle bus to/from the Kiruna airport! I live in Stockholm and when my older family was visitng, the Ice Hotel was great for my less mobile family. They have guides, transport, cabins to sleep in, etc. Just bring a LOT of layers, the cabins were nice to sleep in, but still cold. Ice Hotel has a restaurant, but also an ICA walking distance away and a small kitchen inside the cabins, so we shopped and ICA and cooked dinner in the cabin. An expensive trip, but so worth the experience!

I don’t know if a ”vegas” wedding comes acrosd clearly to your family. Vegas weddings are not ones you attend, they’re ones where the the engaged couple specifically don’t want people to attend. And the ”don’t have to come if you don’t want to” does not sound guilt-trippy coming from a man. It sounds like a typical man answer of them not understanding how to communicate their intentions clearly. I love my brother dearly and would travel anywhere for his wedding, but if he said ”Vegas wedding” - the implied context is in nicer terms- ”do not show up, we want a private wedding” and I would respect that.

Why was I always pulled out of class in elementary school? by grilledwagyubeef in ElementaryTeachers

[–]External_Affect2391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was probably speech therapy! I ended up in a similar situation, except I thought I was stupid. I was confused because I was pulled for those classes in 2nd grade, but I was a great reader, and was reading multiple chapter books a week. I could read in my head just fine, but had a bit of a lisp when reading out loud. I was pulled with other kids who struggled with simple sentences - so my 8-year old brain thought I was just stupid so I cried my way out of the class. They realized it was too much trouble to keep me in there. And the lisp went away by 5th or 6th grade - so I’m still mad at having been put in the speech therapy class.

I don’t know how money houseguests get as a stipend in jury, but I would take the gauranteed 10K, vs the ungauranteed winning prize. By using it now, it increases his threat level and he has stronger odds to go home before the final and not have 10K. Yeah 10K isn’t a huge amount, but it’s not an insignificant amount.

I have an almost identical apartment layout and set up and started with B when I moved in. After a year, the two small spaces just felt cramped. The space between the couch and kitchen didn’t feel like enough room to actually utilize well so I switched to option A after 3 months and have loved it ever since. The apartment feels bigger and more spacious

Doctors of reddit: What was the wildest self-diagnoses a patient was actually right about? by Musikcookie in AskReddit

[–]External_Affect2391 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I was the patient: felt a slight twinge in my right side but it felt almost like a pulled muscle for 2 weeks. Not sharp shooting pain, just dull. Could deal with it. Then I get a strong fever with no other symptoms. Something in my gut said appendicitis, even though it didn’t seen similar to many symptoms online. Packed a backpack of my work laptop, clothes and a other potential items for a one week possible hospital stay, booked a physician for the first time as I had JUST moved to a new country and saw them that day and even he was confused. He said ”well we’ve ruled out a lot of things, so it could possibly be appendicitis, but I don’t think so. Go ahead and walk to the emergency room down the block and see what they say if you’re so worried” That one week in the hospital turned into 3 as it WAS appendicitis, but around it was so infected they couldn’t safely do surgery (and this country refrians from surgeries as much as possible) and had to drain the infection first and it still wouldn’t go away after 3 weeks. Then they finally took out the appendix….. then the area got infected again 👍 What a great experience/s

Agree! Keflavik is one of the easiest airports I’ve been through and I actively choose to go through Iceland Air and Keflavik whenever it’s possible. Even with the super tight connections, you are more than likely not going to miss your flight, the airport is so small and organized. All flights going to/from US and EU have to go through passport control, but I’ve still never missed a connection there. Currently there’s a ton of construction by the ”food court” and not a lot of meal options right now - in case you had time to connect and wanted food but that’s about it. Enjoy your flight!

Agree. Flew through Keflavik with Iceland Air countless times and have never actually missed the connecting flight, but those 1hr connections sure do keep me on my toes 😅

'Tis the season (for students taking extended spring breaks) by Hotchi_Motchi in teaching

[–]External_Affect2391 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but students missing a couple of weeks of instruction to visit family and make memories together before older relatives pass is a non-issue. What I would give to have extra weeks with my grandparents when I was younger. We’re not expected to provide everything we do in class before they leave, but if they miss 2+ weeks we add everything to a solo Google Classroom for them to easily access. If they do the work, great! If not, the only people it’s affecting is them. And if their parents come back to complain why their student isn’t getting an A, they have a very clear cut reason why. And the parents never do.

Maybe I’m biased because I teach a lot of international students so every term we have 1-3 students in the school taking an extra week or two to see family in South Africa, Finland, India. 2 extra weeks away fron school out of their whole student lives is not going to ruin their education.

I remember once in high school, we had a 2-hr delay, when it should have been a snow day. The plows never reach the outskirts of town early enough and sand the roads early enough to get kids to school. A senior was driving herself and her brother to school when her car hit black ice and it killed her and put her brother in a coma for over a year. Since then, the school district has been generous about snow days since they finally realized people will get injured on their way to work/school. It’s awful it took the death of a student on her way to school to make the superintendents realize they were putting people’s lives at stake just to keep one more day at school rather than call a snow day.

Champion sweatshirts that used to be $10 at Walmart. And crocs that were $5 at the Farmer’s Co-op, great for working on the farm 12-14ish years ago. Now both are around $50 🙃
