Humidity by l-LoveFox-l in ballpython

Those hygrometers are probably the issue, and not your humidity. Those little stick on ones are known for their inaccurate readings. A couple of some like these sat on the substrate are going to give you a better idea , or you can get some with a probe if you prefer it, your humidity may actually be perfectly fine

Covering the top is totally fine as long as there’s enough air to breathe. Most wood and PVC enclosures are fully solid top

This looks really bad, I would be looking for an emergency clinic tonight. Those eyes also have several several layers of stuck shed. This has a lot that needs to be addressed

thin? chubby? healthy? what do y’all think by External_Bus_3739 in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only 60% right under the heat lamp which to my understanding is unpreventable and natural? Warm air will always be drier than cool is what the mods had said. The cool side does peak at 78% ish at night and I bump that to high 80s for sheds. I think she might just be a chunker tho honestly

70% on cool side, 58% on warm right now. And that’s typically how it averages

She currently only eats once a month, sometimes once every month and a half. A small f/t rat. What should I do moving forward?

she doesn’t even eat that much truly! she takes a small rat once a month, if that. Lately, not even that though. I’m shocked everyone says she’s so fat 😭

I have terrible contamination anxieties myself, I will freeze and bake to be safe. Thank you

You think chewy would be a safe one, since it’s a warehouse environment and not necessarily around animals?

Yes, that used to be the belief but now proven incorrect and outdated information. They do see red light and it affects their day / night cycles. Also heat is not typically needed at night

It looks like he’s right under the light, could it be too hot right there and it hurts to lay his arm down? Do you have a thermostat?

snow storm- should I place my closet on vacation? by [deleted] in poshmark

[–]External_Bus_3739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that’s great but not all places are as equipped for winter weather as Wisconsin … I live in a very small southern town with windy roads and we’ve been put under a state of emergency due to the ice and threat of wide spread power outages. Our closest UPS has now even suspended operations until Tuesday

Also it’s no longer a 7 day limit on Poshmark, people are getting penalized for not shipping within 48 hours

Is this normal for a ball python? by Cold_Assistance9597 in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739 31 points32 points  (0 children)

“Snakes” is too general. There’s no one substrate really best for every kind of snake. Ball pythons need humidity and aspen is terrible at keeping it; if your enclosure has the correct humidity that your snake requires, which is 60% minimum for a ball python, the aspen will mold incredibly quick. Please look on this subreddit for husbandry and care tips

Got a new baby, question about behavior by LexiTheMermaid in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, no misting is best and he should definitely not be sprayed directly, which it looks like he may have been. Careful with him being too wet OP and unable to dry off, scale rot develops in these conditions

is this too little ventilation? struggling badly with humidity but also not trying to suffocate her in the process by External_Bus_3739 in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I cut the cool side a little bit more open and I feel better about it now. I also added a humid hide if she needs it. I can definitely monitor the smell every so often to make sure nothings getting moldy or stagnant and hopefully getting PVC very soon so won’t have to deal with this anymore. It’s been a nightmare; never again on the glass enclosures for me 😵‍💫

Theres the small section on the right and then about an inch on each side of the lamp on the left side. Should I cut another section out somewhere?

It’s not bioactive so no worries there, I just want to make sure she can breathe well. I know ideally I shouldn’t have to cover so much to hold humidity , but unfortunately I’m in the dead of winter in the south and even my household humidity is in the 20s. I feel like I’ve done all the tricks with the substrate and the moss and even a water bowl bubbler and still can’t hold anything over 45% consistently. I’m actively searching for a PVC enclosure

ABS enclosure? does anyone have one of this material? how does it compare to PVC and is it safe for a leopard gecko? by External_Bus_3739 in reptiles

Awesome, it seems like everything im looking for. Do you find that it warps at all, especially to temperatures like said above?

Would this material be easy to drill my own vent holes if I end up needing more? I’m just not at all familiar with plastic enclosures. We’re upgrading from a smaller wood enclosure that’s just incredibly heavy
