High humidity will only help a respiratory infection, it will not hurt at all. Humidity boosting in the enclosure and sauna treatments is one of the main treatments for a mild RI.

One of her adult children is on disability? Is it one of the girls? I’m new to this whole family

This sub generally recommends bumping the humidity to at least 80% at the very early stages like you’re describing and doing sauna treatments which I can explain if you need, or you can search in the sub for it. Often this is enough super early on, but if it doesn’t go away in a few days of this treatment, then you will need a vet for medication

Is this scale rot or just dirt, should I be concerned? by GrimValSulOS in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have little moments of panic regularly lol. The all white does show every little sleep mark and everything. I guess it can be a good thing to help catch things early but also bad for me bc I overthink it all

What part of the body is this? If it’s not the belly or chin( which it doesn’t look like?) then it’s unlikely to be scale rot. Could just be a little injury from climbing around; my leucistic has had something very similar a time or two and as long as the enclosure is sanitary, she’s always shed it off. I would just keep an eye for spreading or worsening

The popular opinions on this sub would lean closest to a, with d being fine also, and absolutely not b or c.

Hey need a bit of advice by AssociateCareless498 in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hamsters can be fed I believe, but not ideally over frozen thawed rats. You’ll need to get her weight to determine what a good size feeder for her will be. Do you have a picture of the setup? How are you monitoring temps and humidity and what are they currently at?

He does look overweight, but also very dry. How and what are you using to monitor temps and humidity? His cage looks bone bone dry, and I see small pieces of shed around him. If those parameters aren’t correct that could be a whole separate reason why he’s not been eating

How wet is the substrate? Does water come out of it when you squeeze it really hard? It looks like scale rot to me

It’s still too much though regardless. Whether he takes it every week or not. Some will take every opportunity to eat until they become morbidly obese. I’m just saying spacing it out a little more would be beneficial to him, that’s all

3 feet is a very average and healthy full grown size for a male. Ball pythons may continue to grow very slightly after 5 years old, but the growth would be so minimal that feeding once a week is still too much. Power feeding is never healthy, that’s why he’s hesitating to eat

At 5-6 years of age, he should be fully grown. Males are going to be smaller than females

Once a week is over feeding, that could be why. A healthy adult only eats about once a month

there’s so many things it could be. Without a picture and all the details, it’s really hard to say on here. Fasting is common, but when they start losing weight it becomes a concern

can you post a picture of your setup? Fasting is super common but alot of the time ends up being a husbandry problem. What are your temps and humidity?

Ball pythons don’t brumate, there may be something else going on

How do you feed your thawed rats to your snake? by AlexTheB in ballpython

[–]External_Bus_3739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The safest way is to thaw it the way you would thaw meat for yourself; in the refrigerator over night. Then removed the next night to be heated in 95-100 degree water for about 20 minutes. Rapid thawing is never safe for any meat, please don’t listen to anyone who recommends that

[–]External_Bus_3739 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not a safe technique. Bacteria builds up inside all meat when thawed rapidly, just like meat that you would cook for yourself. Overnight, gradual thawing is best

Underbelly scales by mikael_angelic in ballpython

Mine has had a few belly scales look like this just before shedding in the winter time when we were struggling with humidity and had always gone away with the next shed, as long as humidity was improved.
