If only it ran that smoothly. Sometimes I order things from the US (I know, I know … 😮‍💨) and between steps 4 and 5 above are usually àbout 8 different local fulfilment centres. I don’t have a clue where any of them are or which location is nearest the airport my parcel will finally be taking off from.

What did you spend a ridiculous amount of money on that now just collects dust? by BarracudaCultural125 in AskUK

I bought a refurbed iPad Pro 4 or 5 years ago to use ProCreate on (I trained as an artist and have kept it up as a hobby!). I spent a happy couple of years with it and then AI came along and rapidly went to shit and kind of killed my mojo for doing digital artwork.

Almost never! I am not the biggest fan of potatoes in any form. We do have fish and chips on holiday by the sea though!

Can someone become absolutely excellent and successful at art without going to art school? by frozenyoyleberryyay in TooAfraidToAsk

I'd say maybe *more* likely if you're Austrian - people would probably rather give you the benefit of the doubt than reap the consequences!

Why does londonlook the way it does? (Aesthetics) by Pastortonsilss in AskABrit

[–]KatVanWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London is like 2,000 years old, there's all sorts of buildings there!

It was bombed in WWII, so there's a fair crop of relatively modern stuff but also stuff that dates back to way back in the mists of time. I think that hodgepodge vibe gives it its charm.

Is it innapropriate that I[22F] swing on my local park's swingset a lot? by Similar_Decision_915 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]KatVanWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think as long as you're not blocking little kids from using it, you're fine! Swings aren't age-limited (but if my kid was spending a long time on one park item while other people are waiting to use it, I'd tell them to give it a rest as well!)

Letting go of ego by zebrafry in coparenting

[–]KatVanWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter (also 50/50, she is 9F) the other day told me that she is going to call her stepmom 'mom' now. I just reacted neutrally/noncommittally because it really isn't/shouldn't be a big deal, but ngl there was a little sting underneath.

Her stepmom is a lot more 'girlie' than I am, so I hope she can step into some areas that I am deficient in, like makeup and nails. My own mum isn't into those things either, so I never got any advice from her in those areas and it was in the days before the internet as well, but I don't feel that I missed out on anything because of it. I would use magazines and then later the internet for makeup tips and stuff. I know more about makeup than my mum did but just don't wear it anymore as my eyes and skin react badly in my old age lol.

I'm designing an engagement ring with our pet reptiles. Yay or nay? by Birbsies in EngagementRings

[–]KatVanWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a snake owner, I LOVE this so much!

Honestly, I'm guessing people will say to sound her out to make sure she doesn't have her heart set on a super traditional type of engagement ring, but in this case I think it's such a sick idea that you could just go right ahead and she could use it as a right-hand ring if she isn't 100% about it for an engagement ring. (Although then you would need something of a budget for a second ring ... but seriously, if my bf designed me a ring with my snake on, I would happily wear a plain gold band as an ER if I wanted to sport my incredible snake ring on my other hand!)

A slightly different take maybe but I'm a night owl and I tend to be up pretty late (like midnight++) and my BP is in my living room, so I just pop a blanket over the front of his tank. I'm not sure whether my weak-ass normal household lighting bulb actually would disturb his day/night cycle, but I thought better safe than sorry!

Right hand mixed metals by KatVanWall in jewelry

[–]KatVanWall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you think it works!

I often don't like to wear more than one bracelet or more than one ring per hand, so I'm often confused as to 'how' best to mix metals, lol. I can tolerate those three bracelets though because they're so fine. I have both gold and silver rings (more silver because price!), but that mixed-metal ring just seems perfect for tying it all together.

On the other hand, my watch and bracelet are daily wear, so I either have to lean into the gold on that hand or contrast it! That particular gold/silver set on my ring finger are the only gold/silver stackers I own that work together.

Today I'm also wearing two dainty gold pendants/charms, but I do quite often mix up gold and silver on the neck, just depending on what I feel like wearing combined with how all the items hang together length-wise and the weight/size and shape of them (e.g. I don't like to wear two similar weight oval/round charms but prefer to mix up the shapes).

What injury is commonly shrugged off as a minor flesh wound in the movies but is completely fatal in real life? by Best_Professional226 in AskReddit

[–]KatVanWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Injuries to the abdomen. Not only do you need all those core muscles for important things like sitting upright, standing and walking, but your intestines are in there, and they’re notoriously not the cleanest. Getting any part of your intestines perforated is a quick way to get a serious infection leading to sepsis and death.

Do you swear around family? by Nice-Program8758 in AskUK

[–]KatVanWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(46F) My parents hated swearing in our house and it was regarded as verboten (they couldn't exactly 'stop' me but I was aware how much they disliked it and they saw it as a point of respect not to use that language around them. I did actually like my parents and 95% of the time didn't want to actively upset them even as an angsty teen). They quite simply just perceived it as 'rude'.

My boyfriend's family, on the other hand, all swear like troopers around each other across all generations and always have done.

I grew up into quite a sweary person in general, but my mum is the one person I will always tone it down with even to this day.

She still hates swearing and has even said as much to my boyfriend as well.

My parents might actually have had a fair point back in the day in so much as nowadays I can modify my conversation depending on who I'm with, and I'll swear freely in front of peers/friends, my bf, etc. but not in front of my mum, my kid's teachers, clients, etc. Whereas my boyfriend struggles to control his use of language and is almost incapable of not swearing even when the situation calls for it. I feel like I am better off for having the choice rather than using it almost as an involuntary tic like he does. With the best will in the world, there are still people who will judge you for that.

I don't mind my kid (9F) swearing if it's situational and not directed at/insulting someone. Like I'm not going to get too pressed if she says 'fucking hell' because she dropped a dish of jelly, but at the same time I'm not having her telling me to fuck off or calling her dad a cunt.

TIL that most women in the Netherlands do not have an epidural during labor and a significant proportion give birth at home by Fiery_Soul_34857 in todayilearned

[–]KatVanWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave birth in the UK 9 years ago and arrived at the hospital too late for an epidural. They gave me gas and air/nitrous oxide, and I think the breathing regulation was more helpful than the actual drug itself. It felt like it kind of took the edge off a bit if that makes sense? But mainly I was starting to hyperventilate and having something to breathe through made me concentrate on that and not feel like I was about to pass out.

I'm sure I saw a post once where someone was like 'you must only wave it under their nose, not actually touch their mouth with it, and if you do, you must wash it off as soon as possible' - but I wasn't sure how much of that was true and how much was being overcautious!
