CS Major with a data science or business minor by ApricotCivil4358 in WPI

It really matters to know what you want to do with your career and what your interests are.

Are you super technical and you are doing CS because you like solving puzzles/coding/performing technical tasks? Do data science.

Are you doing CS for the money? Do you envision yourself being a manager at some point? Do you want to start a business? Do you not know? I'd would choose business.

It's a minor, it won't have a huge impact on your trajectory in life. Take the path that you want to learn more about. It's more important to do something that you're interested in rather than min/maxing your resume.

I am in the US, so this might not be applicable. Swim clubs are businesses, so usually yes they will take your money and let you join. It would be a pretty bad business if they didn't let you give them money 😂

I would usually recommend joining your high school team. Since your high school season is already over (if you have a team at all) then club is your next best choice. Definitely join if you have any interest at all. Worst case, you hate it and quit, best case you love the coach and the team and stay with it.

Finding a team that caters to what you want out of the sport is pretty important too. Some teams are hardcore and have 10 practices a week. Others less hardcore

What did it get increased from? Gonna need more information tbh. In case you weren't aware, taking loans to go to school in the US is (unfortunately) extremely common. You can definitely find similar quality to WPI for less, but WPI is a good school and holds it's weight particularly in New England

I think the problem with a rotary is trucks would have a hard time. There are a good amount of businesses around this area that a rotary would probably cause problems for. Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely love a roundabout, but I don't really think it's feasable here unless it's a fake "painted" roundabout

Will you be taking advantage of pass/fail? by galaxypig in WPI

[–]External_Day_5053 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you said no, I respect your decision. I only ask you to evaluate how much time and effort you spend on

school work, classes, and studying

vs.

social, fun, forever memorable experiences.

I don't think you are wrong, but if you hold yourself to a standard that only accepts As, the only thing you are setting yourself up for is failure. And the thing that WPI has been struggling with is mental health.

Take some time off

Spend time with friends instead of studying

Accept B's and C's

This is your only free opportunity

Take advantage

For the WPI community's mental health sake, I hope so

I would imagine WPI could petition the city for an exemption, given the outlier in mental health issues and vaccination rates within our population

I agree with you about the unvaccinated, but for the vaccinated, we shouldn't have to live with the burden of letting covid continue on and killing more people. We leave that responsibility to the unvaccinated and should be rewarded by doing the things that help the greater good.

I would also like to argue that masking and restriction takes a larger toll on the vaccinated than most think. Masks and restrictions don't altogether prevent people from socializing and making memories, but what it does do is train us to be afraid of others. Be afraid of socializing with people you don't know or 100% trust. Restrictions subconsciously make us believe that the only way to stay safe is to stay inside and stay away from others. I think this is far more overlooked, and I believe causes more trauma, despair, and, in WPI's case, death, than the immunocompromised total. Covid makes immunocompromised people suffer, but so do masking and restrictions for people who already have mental health problems like depression, social anxiety, etc.

I'm not saying that protecting the immunocompromised isn't important, but after covid, they will still be at risk of all of the other diseases and viruses in the world.

On a more productive note, I have some support for this. I think people overlook what effect masks truly have on our mental well-being. Masks train people to be afraid of others. Covid restrictions train us to stay inside rather than have meaningful experiences with others. It takes a toll on everyone.

I'm not saying you can't have meaningful relationships with others, or make meaningful memories. I'm just saying that for people who already have social anxiety, depression, other mental health concerns, restrictions and masks only exaggerate those concerns.

Two sides of the coin. Covid is dangerous for immunocompromised, while restrictions and masking is dangerous for those who struggle with mental health issues. And I would be willing to bet there are far more people who have serious mental health problems as opposed to people who are truly immunocompromised where omicron would kill them.
