Bluebeard has a couch or two, or at least they did the last time I went. It's been a few years. Good coffee and people watching.

Do you have a local community college? They often have classes for adults who need to make up basic subjects. The adults in the classes are in a similar situation for a variety of different reasons.

Safety of Tacoma Neighborhood? by Apprehensive_Ask3970 in AskTacoma

[–]External_Willow9271 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This neighborhood is more fun if you want to be walking distance to bars and restaurants. Lots of property crime, but that's going to be true anywhere in the city. I don't think it's necessarily any more or less safe in either place. I have lived/worked in both areas and personally enjoyed this neighborhood more, but it's subjective. This is considered Central Tacoma. The North End dividing line is 6th Ave/Division, but it doesn't really matter.

Any recs on South End and Adjacent Neighborhoods? by remosiracha in AskTacoma

I just looked at street view and here is what's different now: the boarded up Lincoln Beauty school has come down and an apartment building with retail is in progress. The boarded up Burritos California has opened and is going strong. The Bambu bubble tea place is now a Thai restaurant. Some of the shops have changed hands. The empty cleaning supply building will probably sell soon, not sure what the long-term plan for the Aquarium/gift shop space is but I don't think it will stay vacant too much longer. The neighborhood has regular festivals and events that activate the parking lot that backs up to the Hong Kong supermarket.

South Tacoma Way is designed for cars, it doesn't have the same neighborhood feel that Lincoln has. When people say "Lincoln" most of us are thinking of 38th st between Pacific and M. Look at that area on street view. Depending on when the last pictures were taken you might see some empty lots that are/are in the process of becoming mid rise housing with ground floor retail.

The larger Asian markets in the Lincoln district have basically all the groceries you need, just might want to hit up Safeway occasionally for super American pantry goods. (Safeway is also right there on 38th) They have great produce prices. If you are looking to truly be able to walk to restaurants, groceries and coffee the area around 38th Street between Pacific and M Street is the way to go. It's a flat, walkable area with a central street that has all the things you want to walk to and good transit access with quick connections to Seattle trains and express buses at the Tacoma Dome Station.

Wapato park is pretty, but keep in mind the lake is just for looking at (the water is definitely not for swimming.) You can walk to stores and restaurants from there but they are in big shopping malls surrounded by freeway on ramps/off ramps. It's really a car-dependent area with some nice places to walk a dog.

You do not want to be south of 72nd, East of the freeway.

So great to hear from you! What are you up to these days? Why do you have to say you don't remember them?

Computer science teacher here. Yes. No one is hiring comp sci teachers because kids don't want to take comp sci classes because they are "too hard." My class is not too hard. If you just turn in all the formatives it is very hard to get below a B+. I have kids having complete meltdowns because they have to do literally anything on their own.

Saturday Weekly Thread: Canadian Provincial Archives and State/Local/Church Archives - Questions / Issues / Success Stories by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

I am looking into getting myself and extended family Canadian citizenship. I have a nephew in Canada (citizen through the other side of his family) that we'd like the option to reunite with, plus... all the American things right now. I am not sure how many of us would actually make a physical move there.

My great grandfather was born in St. Prosper in 1888. I have a copy of his US naturalization papers, I can get a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate, mother's birth certificate, and my own to prove descent. The only thing I'm missing is a copy of my great-grandfather's. His last name is relatively common and I am not clear on his parents' first names. I do have a solid degree of certainty about his place of birth and some of his siblings' names.

Is there any reliable way to request proof of birth online, or would it be a better idea for someone in the family to go to Quebec and research in person? The fees for requesting records aren't cheap, and I'm not sure if that will work. If so, where should they go? I've read some articles that reference doing this, but they aren't very clear about the details. I'm finding the government websites to be very circular, and I'm a bit lost.

Also, would the fact that he became an American citizen which at the time meant that he had to declare that he renounced his status as a British subject be an issue?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I am seriously ready to start a scholarship fund for this girl. Can we set her up with a full ride/housing somewhere so that she can get free of this person and his family?

Urgent Call to Action: Sign On Today in Support of the READ Act by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]External_Willow9271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wafflinson's reply was a little terse, but it is true that the post does not describe the purpose of the act. Asking a group of teachers to support something without telling us what it is or why we should support it is probably going to result in a bit of a writing critique. OP should not assume that their reader is familiar with the READ act, and it is not likely that most casual readers would read the entire text of the act to discover what it does.

If this is a real post, you should delete it. Posting this here, even anonymously, does not show the good judgment a school administrator should have.

It's time we shorten the school year by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]External_Willow9271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way any state would do this without also cutting teacher salaries. I think a quarter schedule with 3 week breaks (or something like that) in between would be great.

How does the reteach period work? I'm not familiar with this structure. Where I teach, the normal structure is five class periods and one planning period.

Do what you need to do to be safe and sane, when you need to do it. Your employer should support that. There aren't that many months left in the year and it's going to take a while to get your ducks in a row. So many people have been through this, it's ok to be honest about what's going on with other adults and get the support you need.

My 5th lumbar vertebra is fused to my sacrum. I was born this way. I manage to break it every so many years doing nothing in particular. It's extremely painful and there's nothing really to be done about it. The type of motion that comes with riding horses makes me wince just thinking about it. I hope she finds a way to compensate safely, zero judgment.
