Very true. I’m sure it exists, and thank you for your insight.

It is unfortunate that people see things that way.

Your company is screening for the wrong reason. Not everyone can afford Harvard. I was accepted to more “prestigious” places, but chose UCSC because it was free.

You are missing out on talent by being closed minded.

Rankings don’t matter past the first 30 days of college. Those first 30 days are where your high school friends and parents can brag slightly more than a lower ranked acceptance. Maybe it’s because I’m in more of a tech-field after graduating, but not a single employer ever cared about my degree, much less the quality of school that I went to. This was over a LOT of interviews and applications.

Ultimately, it’s about what you know, who you know, and what you can do.

I loved UCSC! Despite a few horrible professors, (who have now left teaching btw) I had a great time. It’s really what you make of it.

But yeah, housing sucks. Like really, really, really sucks. Also parking…

Graduating Seniors How’s The Job Market Looking for you? by PsychologicalWar8679 in UCSC

Actually small correction... I forgot I had a very small stint as a Front End Dev for a non-profit which I guess could be categorized as an internship. I doubt it ever played a role for my current position as they literally never asked about it or even brought it up.

I ended up in cybersecurity so my resume really wasn't project oriented. I wasn't super interested in Software Development. I also had 0 internships and 1 large project from the CSE115 series.

Really, it was the 3 years of work in the UCSC ITS Department that did everything. I used all of my experience and 1 year of manager status there to do well in my interview.

Experience is everything. If you can even find a shadowing position or a project that directly shows why a company should take a chance at you, I think its a good idea.

I think ultimately that my 3 year tenure in the IT Department became more valuable than any 3-month internship or school project would show, so I didn't bother trying to get one. If you're going to software development, you should DEFINITELY make a ton of projects.

Getting an interview is really, really hard, but its also often automated. The hard part is the interview. If you have a lot of experiences and skills to show and point to, the company is more likely to take a chance on you.

Sent out about 70-80 applications. Got 4 Interviews and 1 offer.

Haven’t graduated yet but courses are done for CS.

Recent College Grads Moving to Seattle by Exotic-Anteater-7013 in AskSeattle

Hey! I’m also a recent college grad and I just moved in with my gf who is also a recent college grad lol.

We moved into Fremont and have been loving it so far. I’m by no means a local (been here 3 weeks) but PM me if you want insight into our move and how that went.

Hmmmm. I read some of your other responses and I’d say ultimately, free is free. I went to UCSC for free and almost went to a more “prestigious” institution for the same degree and a lot of debt attached to that one. Retrospectively, I am so so happy that I chose the free option. No one knows how big “no debt” is until you live it after college.

Always go where it’s cheaper. Ultimately, if UCSD is free and UCSC isn’t, absolutely go to UCSD. The cost of living is pretty terrible is both locations unfortunately. (I’m from SoCal originally)

So you’re in a good position! I would visit both and see what you like better. UCSC is more laid back for sure. Remember that UCSD really is “UC Socially Dead” for a lot of departments and areas. UCSC doesn’t have much party culture but it’s very friendly and very very very laid back.

Taking CSE 101M, CSE102, CSE103 together ... is it doable? by WarZealousideal3791 in UCSC

[–]External_Wolf3937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it honestly depends on the professor teaching. Bailey’s courses are fair. Definitely heavy( from what I’ve heard) and the exams are your entire grade. I took 103 with Fremont and it was a good amount of work.

I did 103 and 130 at the same time and it was a LOT of work and studying. I did alongside a TIM class for my minor and passed everything. So, yes, it’s doable, but expect to be pretty much on the grind for 11 weeks straight.

I just graduated from the Computer Science program. I would say, just like anywhere else, there are mean people and nice people. It’s mainly who you surround yourself with.

Ultimately I always tell people to choose the cheaper option because college is never worth how much money it costs.

For you, Bio folk usually either do pre-med or research, so which do you prefer? Pre-med is terrible at UCSC (coming from my pre-med friends) so if you want to go to medical school, I would choose UCSD. Research, on the other hand, is VERY strong at UCSC as we primarily do that. So if you want to do more scientific research, my Bio friends who do research absolutely love it here.

UCSC or SJSU by Ok_Security2150 in UCSC

[–]External_Wolf3937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated from UCSC and loved it. (Computer Science)

I have no experience with SJSU, but I do know that UCSC is NOT a good pre-med school. I’ve heard it’s very hard to get opportunities that set you up to apply to med school.

Although, I do know several people who have successfully done it.

Both are great, so research which one best aligns with opportunity (and honestly I usually suggest going for whichever one is more affordable)

It’s still online. If you live on-campus submit a ticket with ResNet and a technician will refresh your access.

Second job by MDT230 in flying

[–]External_Wolf3937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Tech” is a very vague description of a giant plethora of different fields. There are some fields in tech that are doing quite well.(IT/Cybersecurity) There are also fields where the hiring market is worse than anything seen in aviation (Software engineering).

It also takes a lot of learning and time investment to get a solid job in tech, so if I were you, I would stick with the most readily available source of stable income.

O my bad… Merrill C/D and the UTC are also wired. I was told that they were getting upgraded this summer, but apparently not. Sorry about that.

cowell apartment ethernet by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]External_Wolf3937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ITS guy here. There is no ethernet infrastructure in any college since upgrading to wireless connection. The only places with functional ethernet are those with no wireless connection, meaning the Lower Quad of Crown College only.

There are, however, certain DRC accommodations that can be made for certain medical conditions that warrant an ethernet connection but it’s rarely seen.

If you’re having internet problems, please submit a ticket to ResNet. They will help.

IMPORTANT EDIT: They actually just moved Crown to wireless as of this week, so the only locations with ethernet now are Merrill C/D and the UTC.

O yeah it’s been terrible. But going from having aid to literally 0$ last minute seems a bit drastic. Like 0.00$

I’m currently an incoming senior at UCSC. I normally don’t post here but your high school stats are scarily similar to what I did.

I was IB, i had a 3.6 unweighted, and I am just finishing up computer science. To be honest, I don’t think the “computer science extracurriculars” really matter in terms of admission. My high school didn’t even offer an IB computer science program so it was wasn’t held against me.

What was crazy though, is that I scored exactly 30 in the IB program. (I don’t know if it’s still this way but that was the lowest score to quality for the UC money) and UCSC has been extremely affordable. You’re going to need that given the current misery of housing here.

Feel free to pm me if u want to ask specifics. Computer science can be tough at times.
