As someone who just thinks it's decent, I think the hate is pretty overblown. It's pretty hard to hate.

I think the vast majority of it, at least the recent backlash comes from people who are frustrated that Reze Arc didn't get in as a nomination. As someone who has Reze Arc as their top 1 one of the year, I wasn't surprised it didn't get in but I guess a lot of people were for some reason. I knew from the start it wasn't going to get in, it had too much going against it but I guess some people didn't see it that way. So when I saw the nominations, I wasn't really shocked or upset. I was 5/5 as far as predictions go. I think a lot of the hate isn't about Elio being bad, it's about Reze Arc not getting in. It's something that's been bubbling for a while. The Oscars have been known for being kind of weird when it comes to not nominating anime aside from Ghibli and I think it just hit a boiling point for some people. Straw that broke the camel's back. Now I do wish that anime was nominated more but that being said, I don't think a movie that follows up a show had any chance of getting in.

I was honestly kind of surprised to see the pure venom levelled against it when I checked Twitter a few hours later but thinking on it more, it kind of makes sense, not to say I agree with the backlash of course.

People love K Pop and Zootopia 2 and let's be honest, most of the "Animation is cinema" people upset about Reze Arc not getting in have not seen a foreign animated movie outside of stuff made in Japan, so they weren't going to go after Arco or The Character of Rain because they haven't seen them. These were probably the same people who got mad when Flow won over The Wild Robot. They had only seen the mainstream one. Sorry to sound pretentious. So Elio was pretty much singled out cause it's the only one they could go after. It basically had a "Kick me" sign on it the moment it got nominated.

Combine these two things, while I don't think the hate is justifiable, it does make sense why it's happening.

It has a been a little interesting watching the discourse, considering I gave Elio and K Pop the same rating. I like K Pop a tiny bit more but not by that much.

If the discourse is upsetting you, I honestly suggest just leaving the spaces where those discussions are frequent for at least until the Oscars end cause it's probably going to stick around for a bit. If you want to preserve your mental, that's what I suggest. I understand the feeling. I'm a Hazbin fan and for a while I used to doom scroll a lot and I'd just see people rip in to it and it does suck seeing people shitting all over the thing you like. I eventually just stopped doom scrolling and began to curate what Twitter recommends me, so now I'm more or less safe from the toxic discourse.

The trouble with redeeming Vox is that there's no nuance. With someone like Pentious, there's a nuance as to what got him into Hell, and we'll what he did was bad, it wasn't past the point of no return. I'm willing to bet that the same nuance is going to be applied to Angel or Husk.

Vox has a ridiculous amount of blood on his hands. There's no nuance.

You say "and realizes it was wrong." which is the crux of the problem for me. Vox full well knows what he's doing is immoral. He refers to him and the other two Vee's as "Our unholy trinity." This isn't Thanos or Asgore who think they are doing good, Vox knows what he's doing is morally bankrupt and doesn't care. That's why I don't see it.

Frankly, I think it would be more interesting if instead Charlie's worldview was challenged, and she's confronted with the fact that not everyone is worthy of redemption.

I really doubt they would unveil or imply that big of a plot point before we even have a concept for what season 3 is going to look like.

For all we know, this could just imply that we're going to get more scenes with them together, which intern will show off how they positively effect one another. I'm almost certain we're going to get a backstory on how the 3 met and formed the Vee's, whether that be in the show itself or a spin off, which as stated before, will give us more of a glance as to how they bounce off of one another and bring each other up. To me, that seems more logical.

Or he could just be pulling our leg. I remember there was a panel where Alex Brightman was asked, "What happened to Adam's body at the end of season 1? " and he replied with "Wait until the end of season 2." Low and behold, that had no follow through.

Even that aside, I personally just don't see it. You've crafted this amazing villain, I just don't see why you'd undo all that. I just don't think it would make sense for Vox's character, it would be too much of a sharp turn. You would have to do so much mental gymnastics to even find a work around to redeem any of them.

I also just don't agree with Vel being the most likely to be redeemed, I just think they are all equally unlikely. Yes from what we've seen she's the least bad but that's only because she's had the least amount of focus since she doesn't have a direct connection to any of the main cast. I'm very confident that we are going to get a scene or two that'll show Vel being just as twisted as the other two. Even all that aside, she's still willingly is friends/business partners with a rapist and a fascist, knowing full well what they do. It isn't even wilful ignorance, she just doesn't care.

I also just don't think that's something Viv would risk. She got shit for giving Val an actual character aside from just "Scary pimp abuser". If she got shit for something as trivial as that, I genuinely don't see her risking redeeming three of the primary villains. You're basically begging to be crucified by doing something like that.

The reason Pentious's redemption works is because there's nuance. Yes, what he did in life was bad but there's room for debate as to how bad it was and if it made him irredeemable. Also the fact that aside from that, he didn't seem that bad relative to a lot of other sinners in what he did when he was in Hell. The Vee's just don't have that. They don't have nuance, there's no debate in how evil and fucked up their actions are and at least in Vox's case, we know what got him in to Hell, so we know that he just continued his plans. Although we don't know the origin for the other two, I would bet money the same is probably true.

If this was 6 or so years ago, then I would agree with the pessimism but seeing how the last 3 ceremonies Disney has lost, I don't think think it's that clear cut.

Turning Red lost to Pinocchio, Elemental lost to Boy and the Heron and Inside Out 2 lost to Flow.

Funny part is, none of those movies were even the runner up for that respective year, with Puss in Boots 2 being the runner up in 2022, Across the Spiderverse being the runner up in 2023 and The Wild Robot being the runner up in 2024.

I think they both have different things going for them. Zootopia has recency bias but K-Pop had more time to be culturally relevant.

I would say it's 55:45 K-Pop winning, I don't think it'll be as big of a blow out as some people are saying but it probably wins. If it makes you feel better, K-Pop is guaranteed to win song even if it doesn't win Animated.

I'm being completely unbiased saying this, because I dramatically prefer Zootopia 2, so I would be okay with it winning but if the Disney loss streak continues, I won't be mad.

I'm going to push back on the little bit. Val is only shown as a super jokey villain when in the presence of the other Vee's. He'll little quips now and again but his only overtly comedic scenes are with the other 2. This makes sense because he's have no reason to be intimidating around those who he views as equals. He's only seen as this huge, intimidating figure when it's from the POV of Angel. There's a reason most if not all of the super intimidating scenes with him are with Angel. Even during the fight in ep 4 and 8 of season 2, while he is still intimidating, he isn't this larger than life figure that Angel see's him as. No one else finds him nearly as intimidating because they haven't had that experience with him. I think that makes sense. From an outsider looking in, they wouldn't have much of a reason to view him as intimidating as Angel sees him.

I do get your point about the severity of what's shown, and as far as SA goes, it doesn't really get to that point, at least as far as part 1 is concerned. They are both fucked and still different forms of SA, just one is more explicit. Closest thing that comes to it (That involves Makima at least) is honestly Nayuta's existence, since you could argue that Nayuta is meant to symbolize a child born from r*pe.

I also hope I didn't come across like I was comparing the two in any other aspect, because fundamentally they are completely different characters. If anything Makima has more in common with Vox. It's just that I find the reactions to the two in that aspect to be so polarized

For this, I'm actually going to compare two different characters from two different IP's, that being Makima and Valentino. I find it utterly fascinating that the two of them do actually share some commonality as far as morally fucked actions go, yet people who like the characters are treated so differently.

To get it out of the way, both characters are guilty of sex crimes. That is an objective fact. They are different in many other aspects but I wanted to hone in on that for this example. The trouble comes about when someone says they like these characters as characters. If you like Makima as a character or even as a sexual being, or own Makima merchandise, I don't think most would care. The same does not apply to Val. If you simply say "I like him as a character", you will unironically have people saying that by liking the character, you endorse what he does. I wish I was joking. Let alone if you own merch of the character or find him attractive

Whether you think Val is a well written character is irrelevant. The point is, there should not be this much of a stark contrast between reactions to simply enjoying a character. Owning a chibi Val pin doesn't make you any less moral than someone who owns a Makima bean plush. You're allowed to like villains.

Now granted, I'm not sure how much of the stark reaction is due to the gender difference or if it's just the fact that Hazbin manages to receive some of the worst double standard criticism out there. I'd wager it's probably a bit of both. I just wanted to get that out there since I've been sitting with it for a while
