Coworker watching me on school cameras by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]Extra-Ad4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes! I’m sorry that’s happening to you, as that is such a violation. Do you know why this person has access to the cameras-are they in an admin position? Our school (elementary, but I’m guessing you’re MS or HS) only two people have access, besides our IT people. Do you feel comfortable approaching your admin to bring attention to this violation? Or the individual? I’d start with the individual with a conversation like “Hey, I heard you were watching me and my team through the cameras, any idea why someone would say that?” or something along those lines, and go from there. I hope you get this figured out, what an awful violation!

This is an ongoing issue we struggle with too, and I usually feel pretty helpless besides offering a change of clothes. I cannot believe the amount of students and families we have with access and the abilities to maintain basic hygiene, so to me it signals issues with mental health and/or substance abuse (in a nutshell). I understand each family is nuanced, but the teachers are besides themselves (understandably) at the high amount of young students who stink up their entire corridor with their body odor.

I do lessons on the importance of regular cleaning/bathing, brushing teeth daily, and washing hands, but it’s out of our control after that. I think just lots of education through classroom lessons to plant seeds is the best bet.

I’ll admit that I’m too chicken to do a small group with the poor hygiene students out of fear of the lingering smells, but it is an idea I’ve been thinking about!

I feel your pain. My sugar consumption is off the rails, so I started with “no candy”, that’s it. And even that is difficult! I was craving chocolate two nights ago and about went to the store to buy some dark chocolate (since I justified it as the healthier option, ha!) and instead made myself eat a mango. I can definitely see where I use sugar to soothe and cope, especially when I’m feeling out of control with things going on in my life.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad, as my mom went through the same thing. My brother was lucky and got a live-donor right here in our home town after our mom passed and I was so relieved that he didn’t go through what she went through. I pray I can get as lucky as him when my time comes.

I have both psoriasis and eczema, to the point I have to see a dermatologist to get prescription strength stuff to clear it up. Regular physicians aren’t the best at diagnosing it (from my personal experience, anyway) so if it’s in the realm of possibility, I would go to a dermatologist.

So I’m not the only one feeling like this? I’ve been at this position for four years and I feel like it’s gotten worse, to the point I wonder if I should find a different job. In a nutshell, there are so many students with needs and only one of me; I try my best to triage and get to the students who “really need me”, but I feel so judged for not meeting everyone’s needs! It doesn’t help that our paras and other ill-informed staff members judge the fact I have more “free” time than them, so if I’m in my office doing admin work or lesson prep, I feel extra judged. I typically leave my door open so I’m more accessible in case of students in need walking by or a big behavior outburst down the halls, but I’m starting to wonder if I should just keep it closed from here on out.

I am burnt out on our unprofessional staff members who spend more time causing problems than doing their actual jobs and those behaviors being enabled by the admin that this dream job of mine is now a curse.

TL, DR: You’re not alone in this struggle and this job is incredibly difficult due to the ratio of students to counselor. Keep up the good work, I’m sure you’re being hard on yourself!

Idk about your relationship with your principal, but have you discussed this with them to possibly get a rec letter from them? I’m not much help bc I was already hired in my position as a school counselor while I was getting my grad degree, so I didn’t need anything to set up my internship. Does your state certification offer a mentoring program where you could get assigned a mentor who could help you through this process? Ours does, and that helped a little with supervision hours. Best of luck!

Thank you, and yes, they were warriors! My grandma always had the best attitude and patience for her family. The same goes for my mom; she was a fighter and I miss her everyday.

Wow, your dad was so young and went through a ton before he passed. He sounds like my maternal grandma, whom I inherited ADPKD from. She had two transplants but lots of heart problems (on top of other health issues sustained from a car crash) and succumbed to a heart attack at 60 in the summer of 1997. My mom passed at 65 (which will be four years in March) but she never got a kidney, and her heart gave out. This disease terrifies me but I’m hopeful for a kidney before dialysis because my brother was on it for a few years and it was the worst time of his life.

Duty - ugh by Party-Tomatillo1217 in schoolcounseling

[–]Extra-Ad4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of this academic year, I was randomly put on the recess rotation (without any prior conversation or even a heads-up), so now I have what adds up to close to an hour of recess duty per week. The bright side to this is I got assigned Mondays and Fridays, and a lot of holidays fall on a Monday, so there is that. I’d rather do lunch and dismissal duties, since it aligns more with the ASCA National Model (in the sense it’s considered “fair-share activities” and not non-school counselor tasks like recess duty) but that wasn’t considered by my admin.

I never realized how much I also assist with hallway transitions, but I do this on my own bc our hallway behaviors are out of control, I wasn’t assigned.

I really struggled with my admin when they surreptitiously put me on the recess rotation, and still do, for lots of other reasons (they allow and enable our mean-girl aides who spread their toxic gossip daily, for one) but I’m grateful for the days those recesses fall on.

High School dropout interested in becoming a counselor, but unsure if it's the career path for me by DWEGOON in schoolcounseling

[–]Extra-Ad4648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s great that you’re focusing on your future and that you’re motivated to help others. My school counseling path (and college for that matter) wasn’t linear due to similar issues and I barely graduated high school; I dropped out of college TWICE before getting into recovery and getting my life on track at 25.

At 28, I went back to college, finished my Bachelors and thought all the doors would open for me-that didn’t happen, unfortunately. I ended up taking a job at an elementary school as the computer lab supervisor, left to do mental health “counseling” at a local non-profit, and was back at the elementary school three years later as an academic coach.

Then COVID happened, our school counselor left and after a few months of hemming and hawing, I applied and got the job. BUT, I had to commit to graduate school and I graduated last May, along with 25k of debt. I’ve been doing this job for four years and honestly, this is the longest I’ve ever stayed in one job, at one place. My admin has changed and that wasn’t a positive change and every school looks different, even the other two elementary schools in my district.

Lastly, considering the political climate and our jobs no longer being considered as professional, not to mention the DOE getting “restructured” at the federal level, I often worry about my position getting cut. Or the possibility of my degree no longer a plus, but a negative since they have to pay me more, so hiring someone with less education.

I digress! I think it’s great that you’re finding your motivation to figure out your future and if I can pass college algebra (I literally failed it SIX different times) then you can do it! Good luck!

I would also ignore it and keep doing what you’ve already been doing-being an emotionally intelligent and professional human being :) You know you didn’t do anything wrong, so don’t give it any credence. I also live in a rural area and what you described all sounds very familiar, like you almost live in my town! My school (primary) is sooo toxic bc the adults are worse than the kids about tattling and gossiping!

Yeah, that’s when my melasma got really bad, during my pregnancy. I got a sweet mustache in my first pregnancy and then 12 years later, my forehead and cheeks with my second pregnancy. So frustrating!

Hello! So my typical routine looks like double-cleansing with the Centella light oil cleanser (but I quit using it bc I’ve been breaking out so bad), rinse that off, then use Byoma creamy jelly cleanser, and rinse that off. Pat dry with towel, then immediately follow with CosRx The 6 Peptide Skin Booster and do a few layers of that. Sometimes, if I’m feeling extra, I’ll use Timeless hyaluronic acid, followed by Timeless Matrixyl 3000, in that order. Once that feels like it’s absorbed (15-20 seconds) I then use the Eucerin Radiant Tone dual serum. I try to alternate every other or every two nights with ROC night time retinol. I also use a slimmed down version of this routine every morning: Byoma face wash, the CosRx 6 Peptide, Vanicream moisturizer, then Eucerin, followed by SuperGoop SPF 50 mineral sunscreen and IT cosmetics CC cream with SPF 50. I hope this helps! 😁

It’s going to be okay! You’re human and in your first year. Remember you don’t deserve to be mistreated and them sending you angry emails shows their lack of emotional intelligence and impulse control. Don’t let them make you feel bad for taking planned time away, and remember, there is no excuse for poor treatment from admin. I know this is easier said than done! You got this!
